Hi,

I'll be staying in Disney Poly resort in a few weeks and was wondering what is etiquette when dining with kids but not ordering for them? I found that food portions in America are ridiculously big and if I want to share my portion with my child is it OK for example to ask waiter for empty plate and fork?

I think it depends on where you are eating and how old the child is. For example, at O'Hana at the Poly, the food is served family style, therefore you will be charged per person eating, as well as buffets, of course. Some places in America (although not sure about Disney specifically) will have a charge for sharing a plate, whereas others do not. Obviously you can do this at any counter service and I'm sure they would be happy to give you extra plates.

That is perfectly acceptable. We've been to restaurants where my children have shared meals - sometimes even children's meals!

Also, some use their DP credits to their advantage. In other words, some adults might share a plate at a couple of lunches (knowing they'll get less food and have to agree on the same entree), in order to "bank" the extra credits for a signature meal. You are still only paying for 1 plate of food, so if this is enough, then not a problem! You'll still be charged for extra drinks, etc. Also, like PP said, there may be a small charge to "share plates". So, just ask the server.

The only place you can NOT do this is at a buffet/family style restaurant. There, each person (except the infants/toddlers, of course) are charged just for entering. Otherwise, everyone would share plates at a buffet! :rotfl:

Have a delicious vacation!

Our 10yo and I share meals all the time at WDW. She has adult food tastes but not an adult's appetite.

We do not use the dining plan, however.

Thanks for answering so quickly!
We will not be on any dining plan and we are planning to visit Poly restaurant: "Kona Cafe". My daughter is 6 years old.

Then you'll be fine. When you order, just tell the server that you and your daughter will be sharing whatever meal. Most of the time, the kitchen will split the meal for you before it's even brought out to the table.

I will warn you that most of the time, it's not two half orders, especially with any sides you might have. For example, if you order the ginger crusted ribeye at Kona, that comes with potatoes and broccilini. More than likely you each are going to get more than half a serving of both potatoes and brocclini. But you'll probably each get half of the steak.
