Dining with a 13 year old diabetic son?

We are going in August and staying at RPR. I think I can manage meals for lunch and dinner for my son, but from reading on this board, breakfast most places seems to consist of a lot of pastries, this is a definite no-no for my son. Is there any place to get breakfast that would be more diabetic friendly? I have read that RPR has a dining room with breakfast, but I'm not so sure we'd have time for a sit down breakfast before we'd head off for the parks. I guess we could do room service, but are they terribly more expensive? And would there be anything in the park that he could eat for breakfast? Of course he can have some fruit, but we try to pair that with some kind of protein too. Anyway, any tips would be appreciated! :)

I struggle with breakfasts, too, although I'm not diabetic. I just feel awful if I do some sweet donut/pastry thing first thing in the morning.

I'm curious to see what other responses you get, but we've gotten breakfast over at Pastamore in Citywalk on the way into the parks. They have eggs, sausage, bacon, a potato type of casserole, as well as "breakfast pizza." We've also had good luck with a breakfast sandwich at the cafe just as you enter IOA. I forget what it's called. It's got suns and moons all around it. It's on the right of the "alleyway" as you head into IOA. The sandwich we had eggs and ham. It was on a croissant (not a sweetened one).

My experience with room service has been a small fortune. And I'm not cheap and I love to splurge on vacation, but I'd much rather drop 50 or 60 bucks on lunch or dinner; not breakfast (there's only two of us, mind you).

I do not have any experience with the buffet breakfast at RPR, but I've had the one at HRH, and I won't be returning. It was very expensive, $26, I believe, and it wasn't good at all. Cold runny eggs, practically raw bacon and sausage. Most of the chafing dishes were empty, too. Not just needing to be replaced, but clean and empty the entire time we ate.

I personally plan on making some zucchini bread to bring for a quick, mobile breakast and have the Pastamore and sun & moon place as a backup. It also helps to plan for an early lunch :)

Hopefully we'll both get some more suggestions!

The parks have healthy dining options. When you enter each park grab a park map. The dining section has a legend where some eateries have red apples next to them. These eateries have healthy options. You will find plenty of suitable meals for your son at the parks, CityWalk and the hotels.

RPR has a breakfast area located off the lobby that offrers ala carte items, cereals, fruits, juices, milk. Each park has a bakery that offeres breakfast platters as well as single serve items, many appropriate for your son. The egg platter minus the croissant with a fruit side would be good. CityWalk has a place at Pastamore (marketplace) that has breakfast items and some healthy choices there too.:)

Good to know about the apples on the maps. I'd never noticed that before.

Thank you :)

I think Croissant Moon and Boulangerie have breakfast plates that include fruit and other stuff.

Thanks so much! I'm writing down all these places, plus good to know about the apple icons on the maps, that will help SO much from everything from breakfast to snacks.
