How many people sit at each table? We have a family of five, so is it safe to say we will not have anyone other than our family at our table? Or are the tables bigger than that? How do they decide who to sit together? Will they try to match our family with another family that has kids the same ages as our kids, or is it possible we will be matched with a family who may have toddlers?

I would suggest finding another family similar to yours on the cruise meets board that will be cruising with you and link your dinner ressies together. We've done that for all three of our cruises so far and have not been disappointed with any of our choices of tablemates. Hope this helps!!!

We were 5, and were sat with a family of 3. From what I understand, if you haven't "prelinked" youself with another party, they will try to sit you with a family with children of like ages to yours. It's really no big deal sitting with strangers... even though the family we sat with was no one I would probably end up being friends with, it was interesting to spend time with someone different, and you get to hear what they did during the day, and while on shore.

If you wish to be seated with just your family, notify DCL of this. If you do not, they do a great job in placing families together with children of similar ages/sex. We've been delighted when we've taken "pot luck," but we've also enjoyed time as just our family.

IF your table arrangements aren't satisfactory after the first night, talk to the head server and you will be moved.

I just booked a cruise this morning and had it noted that I prefer a table for four so it is just my family at the table. I am cruising with my DH and DD, DS they will be 2.5 and 10 months at the time of the cruise and I am going to have my hands full with them. I do not think we will be good tablemates

We traveled with my brother and his family and since our reservations were linked they sat us both together. I did see families of four sitting together and a table for 2, so it shouldn't be a problem if you request not to have any tablemates.

Have a great trip!

In 12 Magic cruises, we have been the only 2 at a table for 4, up to a table for 18....and many things in between. If you have a preference, tell DCL. They will try to do what you ask.

There are tables for 4 and tables for 6 and 8. Beyond that, they will put tables together for a large party. With 5 of you, you will likely be either at a table for 6 with just 5 of you OR a table for 8 with a family of 3.

We've had really good luck (and some of our most fun experiences) when we met another family at dinner.

Cruising is an experience that is not repeated often. Why just sit with your family? you can do that at home. Be adventurious and meet new people. Yes there are duds out there but I believe there are far more really cool people to meet. We have not been disappointed in 5 cruises.

Roll the dice and see who sits there. If they are really, really bad you can change.

The basic table sits 4, they just push them together to form the size they want. 4, 8,12,16 and 20. I don't know what the system is for assigning tables, but I suspect they first consider how many in a party, then any special requests, then put everything together like a puzzle in manner that makes sure the wait teams have the same number of guests.
We ended up with a table to ourselves (4 of us), the two other tables are wait staff had both has 12 each, so our wait team has 28 guests. We had a different table than what was on the card in our cabin, the head waiter called about 4 hours before dinner to let us know our table number had changed, and asked if that was okay, so they must have had an issue to resolve if they had to move us.

Adventure is not what we lack, and my husband and I have cruise on several occasions, without the kids, and sat with some fun people, and some not so fun people. My hesitancy is that my kids are going this time, and they are super shy. I am afraid they won't feel comfortable sitting with "strangers" and will not try anything new on the menu, etc. We want them to be relaxed and comfortable on their very first cruise. My husband, however, says they will be fine and we should meet some new people. I hate "gambling." I just don't know what to do.
