Dining Reviews
10/1 – 10/7, 2002

You will see from the list below – we love to eat when we are on vacation. We did not have any “bad” meals on our recent trip – all were good and some were outstanding.

Tuesday, October 1st
Lunch
Cinderella’s Royal Table (MK)
2 – Her Majesty's Bouquet salads with vinaigrette
The Mariner - spice crusted salmon sandwich
Major Domo's Favorite Pie
The Glass Sipper - A frozen fruit smoothie served in Cinderella's collectors mug.
This was a very nice first meal of our trip. I think our server was a little bored with the popularity of Major Domo’s Favorite pie – I thought it was good. Gavin had the salmon and enjoyed it as well. The smoothie was good and we liked having the mug as a souvenir.

Dinner
Roaring Forks (WL)
Cheese Pizza
Fries
Having had lunch at 2:30 PM, we weren’t’ that hungry for dinner. We split a personal pizza and some fires from Roaring Fork before going up to our room for the night. Both were fine – hot and fresh.

Wednesday, October 2nd
Breakfast
Tony’s Town Square (Preplated Character breakfast)
1 – Traditional (eggs, bacon, Italian French Toast with berries)
1 – Healthy (granola with honeyed yogurt & fruit)
We both enjoyed the great character interaction here, the wonderful service (thanks, Becky!) and the food was quite good. I really liked the French toast. And it’s all you can eat, so if you have someone with a big appetite in your party, they can get seconds on whatever they like. We would do this again without hesitation.

Lunch
Akershus, Epcot
Buffet
Ringnes beer
We really enjoyed this buffet. We both grew up with many of the foods on this buffet, so it was not as unfamiliar to us as it would be to some. My favorites were probably the smoked salmon, and the shrimp salad. Gavin loved the herring and the beet salad. For dessert we had a rice cream and a veiled maiden. Both very good. This could easily be a “must do” for us on each trip since it has so many foods that Gavin loves that he hasn’t had much (or any) of since moving to America.

Dinner
Le Cellier, Epcot
Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup
7 oz. Filet Mignon - topped with arugula butter and served with roasted garlic herb mashed potatoes – added Red Wine Sauce
Herb Crusted Prime Rib - roasted Yukon potatoes, caramelized sweet onions, bacon vinaigrette, finished with red wine sauce – added a lobster tail
Glass of Greg Norman Shiraz 99 (Limestone Coast, Australia)
Classic Creme Brulee
Chocolate "Moose"

They were out of several of the wines on the menu, but finally we selected one that they did have. We enjoyed it as a nice complement to our meals. And our meals – well – this was by far my favorite meal of our trip. Great service (Thanks, Eilish!) and wonderful food. This was better than our favorite (expensive – special occasions only) restaurant for this type of food at home, and cheaper! We loved everything – the breadsticks, the cheese soup, our entrees. The roasted Yukon potatoes came with cloves of garlic in them that were so tender they almost melted in your mouth. The filet was served atop the mashed potatoes, and the red wine sauce was perfect with it. All in all, an outstanding meal.

Thursday, October 3rd
Breakfast
Fountainview Bakery, Epcot
Blueberry Muffin
Chocolate Croissant
Coffee, Juice
Good food, very welcome as this was a later breakfast than we had hoped for that day.

Lunch
Electric Umbrella
Burger, Fries
Gavin had this – hasn’t said much either way but I think it was fine.

Friday, October 4th
Breakfast
Ale & Compass Lounge (YC)
2 cereals with milk
2 raspberry danishes
Coffee, Juice
I do like that they give you this quick “in-and-out” option at the hotel. It was very convenient, and the pastries were fresh and good.

Lunch
Hollywood & Vine (MGM)
Buffet Character meal
This was our favorite character meal in terms of character interaction. (long story – you’d have to read the trip report). The food on the buffet was good – plenty of selection. We were each able to find things that we enjoyed. Gavin didn’t really care for the Roasted Sweet Potatoes w/ Root Beer & Bourbon Glaze. My favorite entrée was the Oven Baked Chicken w/Herbs, Citrus & Honey. The Chef's Catch of the Day was salmon, and it was good as well. The brownies for dessert were very rich and chocolaty.

Dinner
Mama Melrose’s (MGM)
Grilled Pepperoni Flatbread - with Bell Peppers and sweet Onions
Four Cheese Flatbread- with Asiago, Mozzarella, Provolone, and Gorgonzola Cheese
Glass, Beringer Founders Merlot 1999
This was a last minute choice – we were able to get in with no wait and no PS. The food was fine but nothing I would go out of my way for. The pizzas reminded me a lot of Macaroni Grill’s Pizza Margherita type of thing. I would eat here again if it fit into our schedule as it did this day, but I wouldn’t goo out of my way or make a PS to eat here.

Saturday, October 5th
Breakfast
Ale & Compass Lounge (YC)
2 cereals with milk
Coffee, Juice

Lunch
Biergarten (Epcot)
Buffet
Glass, Madonna Liebfraumilch
We enjoyed this buffet. We waited in vain for almost an hour for the entertainment to start – at one point they brought the alphorns out – we like alphorn music and were looking forward to hearing them, but we left at almost 1 PM after being there almost an hour and we never heard them. To get our check, we had to ask one of the seaters to tell our server we were ready. I liked the atmosphere, and would consider eating there again depending on how many days we were at Epcot, and if we could see the entertainment while we dined.

Dinner
Tony’s Town Square
Terrazzo seating (for Spectromagic)
2 - Insalata della Casa - Field greens tossed in our house dressing with crouton and Feta cheese
2- Spaghetti della Casa - Vine-ripened tomato sauce with meatball and spaghetti
Fruit Smoothie (raspberry Lemon) in a Lady & Tramp collector’s mug
Tiramisu & panna cotta for dessert
Well, once again, a fabulous time at Tony’s. Thank you Sandy for the table on the terrace, and thank you George for the great service! Is it over priced as some people have said – sure. When else would I pay $19 for a (large!) late of spaghetti? But the food was good, the service was outstanding and being able to see Spectromagic from the terrace was wonderful. Worth every penny as far as we’re concerned.

Sunday, October 6th
Breakfast
Boardwalk bakery (BW)
Cinnamon Yummy
Chocolate Croissant
Coffee, Juice

All I can say is, “Can I hit rewind and take back the breakfast from the previous two days and do it over again here?” Cinnamon Yummy is appropriately named, and Gavin’s Chocolate croissants the best of the stay. This is a must do (hopefully more than once) on future trips. Absolutely wonderful. For anyone with nut allergies, the staff here was great about checking ingredients on the baked goods.

Lunch
Tusker House (AK)
Meal deals
Turkey Wrap in a spinach tortilla with corn chowder & fruit
Grilled Salmon served with rice and fresh seasonal vegetables
We felt like the “meal deal” is a really “good deal”. The food here was fine, although the vegetables were so salty Gavin ate very little of them. He said they were good, but just way too salty. My wrap was fine – nothing special (the ones at Chik-fil-A are better, to give you a point of reference). Gavin liked the salmon. I agree with others who have said that AK could have a few more dining options. We have aRainforest Café at home and it sort of falls into the “Been there, done that, overpriced” category for us. So all in all, Tusker House worked fine for us.

Dinner
Boma (AKL)
Buffet
2 glasses Indaba (house merlot)
Those with nut allergies, ASK for a tour of the buffet with the chef. There are several things you will not be able to eat, including a couple of entrees that, to look at them, you would never guess have nuts in them. For the dessert buffet, only one entrée is marked with a nut warning on their signage, but there ARE more desserts with nuts in them than that – be sure to ask the chef that is attending that area of the buffet. Unfortunately, to my disappointment, the famed zebra domes are off limits (have hazelnuts) but Gavin says they are good. My favorite dessert was a surprise to me: Passionfruit Tarts. Really yummy and after the second or third one, I didn’t mind that I couldn’t have zebra domes. This buffet was by far Gavin’s favorite dining experience of the trip. He loved the seasonings, etc. and I think he could eat her every night! He was told that the menu rotates so that you can eat their three nights in a row without duplication. And some nights the chefs get to make whatever they like – there were lots of chefs here and they all seemed to really enjoy working at this restaurant.

About the wine – Chef Tony told us he bet a guy from Robert Mondavi vineyards that he would not be able to tell the house merlot we tried here from a Mondavi wine – the guy took the bet and lost! It is a very nice wine and very affordable as well. We’d recommend trying a glass if you eat here.

Monday, October 7th
Breakfast
The Mara
2 - cereals with milk
coffee, juice
We ate a quick breakfast at the tables outside Mara before heading out to our last day. I was really lamenting the “unavailability” of the boardwalk Bakery as a Breakfast option this morning. Yummy – the memory still lingers.

Lunch
Yorkshire County Fish Shop (Epcot)
2 - Fish & Chips (snack size) - 2 strips of Fish served with Chips
On a busy day to do last minute things, we grabbed fish from the takeout window. The snack size is a generous portion, between us we did not finish all of the fish or the fries.

Well, there you have it – where we ate and what we thought. I am excited that we will be going back so soon after this trip so that we can try some of our favorites again.

Excellent report!(Excuse me while I wipe the drool from my chin.)
I am now so hungry and still have to wait 8 days to step into the World. I definitely want to try Boma for dinner. We have a PS for breakfast but I think I will just have to add a dinner too. Thanks again!:Pinkbounc

Music Mole- I have never seen corn chowder at Tusker House. Does it come with the wrap or is it separate? How was it. Is it regular corn chowder or is there a twist? Thanks.

SamanthaL - the corn chowder just came with the wrap; I just order it as it was off the menu, and it cam with the chowder and some grapes. The soup was pretty good - potatoes and corn. I like soups - this wasn't the best I've ever had, but I certainly ate most of it, and when we go to AK again (probably in April) wouldn't hesitate to order the same thing.

Nothing "souper special" (sorry couldn't resist the pun ;) ) but quite good considering it's essentially a "fast food" meal.

Yummmmmm..... I have a couple of Dinners still open and you've sold me on Le Cellier!

Great reviews. I also agree that the veggies at tusker house are waaay to salty. Is the Ale and Compass breakfast a new thing? When we stayed at YC a couple years ago, I never noticed this. We had to go to beaches and cream for a quick breakfast.

Wildcard - I believe the breakfast at Ale & Compass is realtively new (sometime this summer or fall). It is quite convenient. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the info! Yumm... If you don't mind posting, wondering how much you budgeted for dining?

We're going next Sat., and I am starting to ballpark dining fees.
thanks! yummy yummy

Curious what was the additional cost of adding the lobster tail at Le Cellier? Was it tender? Thanks!!:)

Snow Witch - the cost of the lobster tail was $10.95. I have only had Lobster tail a couple other times, so i am not an expert by any means, but it seemed tender to me. (Wish I could be more helpful)

Ithastobe: We didn't really have a budget we were trying to stick to per day - it's part of our self indulgent philsophy of vacations :p But I had ballparked that we would spend about $100/day on some days, less on others. I know that sounds like a shocking amount - but we enjoyed eating our way through the parks - Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Thanks for the terrific reviews. Thanks for the tip on NUT allergies at Boma's this is great news to me since i am allergic to them.

Did many of the entrees have nuts. Which ones?? I am so bummed anout the zebra domes...they looked sooooo good.

Fantastic reviews! Thank you so much for sharing them.

I am really glad to read that a lite breakfast is available at the Ale and Compass lounge at the YC. We are staying here for the first time in December, and I was really worried about not having a close, convenient place to grab that much needed morning coffee. I will have to try the Boradwalk Bakery a day or two, as well. The cinnamon yummy is calling my name! ;)

By the way, the passionfruit tarte was one of my favorites at Boma, too.
