Dining Reviews May 14-22-A mix of DXDP and OOP picked by a six year old-Complete6/7

Done reading - thanks for the Steak and Shake one - I might have a closer look at their menu. ;)

I completely forgot about Ohana breakfast - it looks super yummy! And your daughter looks super cute! Love the photo with Stitch! :goodvibes

Looks yummmy! we have never stopped at a Steak and Shake. we're driving down from PA this time...maybe we'll find one along the way!

:woohoo: Found it! Now going back to read! :woohoo:

If you like burgers, fries and shakes you can't beat Steak and Shake. There is a hotel right behind the parking lot and I joked that I should have taken a picture of it so we could stay there next trip and walk there each day.

'Ohana is very good, but I am dying to try Kona. The sacrifices I make for my child:laughing:

I'm sure there will be one once you get farther south. Take my DH with you and he'll find the sign on the highway a few miles away.:rotfl:

I got the Napoleon
PlaysportatDisney016.jpg

It was pretty good. I have seen people rave over it but don’t get the fuss. One lady did stop to ask where I got it though.

I was not able to get many pictures of our cs meals. Usually by the time we ate we were very hungry and the food was gone before I remembered to take a picture. Just figured I would mention them anyway for anyone who wants to do the dxdp and b/c I want to add up what was spent on dxdp vs what we paid.

I knew we were in for a big dinner that night and I had snacked my way through the afternoon. I knew DH and DD needed a light lunch in order to make it to dinner so I grabbed a meal from Roaring Forks for them to share.
I used 1 dxdp credit to get an order of chicken strips with fries, large lemonade and a bowl of soft serve vanilla ice cream. Total was 15 something.
I also used 1 snack credit for a bag of Doritos.
We split this between the three of us and all had plenty to make it until dinner.

I cannot wait to get Mark to the caramel shop in Germany...he is going to love it!

The goodies in France look enticing as well.

Ah, the Karamell Küche! :goodvibes

I remember that from our February trip. We had a fun chat with the CMs working there, in German! :rotfl2:

The goodies in France look nice, but they don't draw me in - as much as I like my French goodies in France - they just don't appeal to me at Epcot. :confused3

As for the Napoleon - you should try the one that our local patissier makes! So good, so different from the Epcot one - I had both - believe me, you cannot compare them! ;)

Hi Diane! Love the pic of you guys kissing and your daughter is the cutest! Great reviews, that caramel pretzel is our favorite!

Wow, Diane...I am impressed. You are certainly quite ambitious; a TR, resort reviews, and dining reviesws! I love how you took pictures of your receipts. I think I might do that this trip as I'm not nearly organized enough to save the receipts themselves and I'm curious to see how we're going to come out, compared to the dining plan. :goodvibes

It is so hard to chose what to get there, everything looks so good. I was hoping to get back again later in the trip but never made it back. (Shocking my plans of actually doing something didn't happen, I know)

It must be so fun to be able to speak German with the CMs.:thumbsup2

I would love to try the one your local patissier makes. I have seen your pictures of your town and it looks so lovely.

Hi Diane! Love the pic of you guys kissing and your daughter is the cutest! Great reviews, that caramel pretzel is our favorite!

Thank you. I was a bit surprised b/c it has been awhile since someone took a picture of just DH and I. Once you have a kid it becomes all about them. You can see Caitlin in the corner and even she looks a bit confused:laughing:

I wish I had known sooner you were going to be there the same time as us. For some reason I thought you were going the week after. I would have loved to meet you. Your reviews are so helpful.

great reviews so far, I can't wait to read the rest!

Thank you. I was sad to cancel Sanaa b/c I knew you were Kidani. I doubt I would have ran into you anyway, but you never know. I really expected to run into a least 1 diser on my trip and I meet none.:sad2:

DH always tells me if I could put about a 1/4 of time and energy I use in planning and thinking about Disney into my career, I would be running the hospital by now. :lmao: Too bad taking x-rays aren't as fun as Disney.

I always love dining and resort reviews and read so many of them when planning my trips. I like to give back, plus I know many people debate the dxdp and I really like it when you do character meals. Those meals add up real quick!

I saw someone mention taking pictures of the receipts on a dining review and it was so much easier than saving the reciept. I had how Disney 000 out the reciept. It's like they don't want you to go home and check the math. Last year I wrote the amount of the meal on the zeroed out reciept but this worked out so much better. I wasn't able to keep perfect track of cs meals or snacks but can get a ballpark figure from allears menus. I haven't added up how much we spent yet so I am hoping we came out ahead. I am sure we did the first few days, but the last 2 might be tough.

I was at Jambo! I actually didn't know which one we were in until like the 2nd day LOL. We never made it over to Kidani either. Now I'm kicking myself now that I'm back and I see the pool at Kidani was probably more awesome than the one at Jambo. Oh well. We were definitely both at Jambo at the same time, but like my DH said there were so many people it would've been a slim chance running into you. Our first room assigned was at the very end of the ostrich trail it was 51xx but I don't remember the exact number, it was soooooo far away and faced the parking lot. We got moved to a room on the 4th floor, savannah view - it's a long story that I will write about in my trip report! I am so exhausted, I want to sort through pictures and start my trip report but I honestly haven't had energy to do hardly anything since we got back, I don't know what is wrong with me - I guess Disney really took it out of me!

I couldn't believe how far some of the rooms were at Jambo. I had no idea it was so big. I hated the walk back to the room from the parking lot! I have heard Kidani has parking under the building and the pool looks cool so we might try that one next time.

‘Ohana dinner
Last year we ate at ‘Ohana for breakfast and dinner. We sat at the same table. This year for breakfast we sat at the same table. It was great for breakfast since it was the first table the characters came to and we were out of there quickly, but I told DH to ask if we could have a different table for dinner. I guess there aren’t many 3 seaters so the guy told us to book a 4 seater next time. We ended up getting a different table closer to a window on the opposite side of the dining room which was a nice change.

While waiting I picked up the Pina Colava. Yummy!

DisneyMay2011onSony159.jpg

Of course our buzzer went off while I was paying, but I told DH to head in and I would find them.

We had a 6:15pm adr. We checked in a few minutes early and sat down to wait. There was an older couple there and while I was away getting my drink the man told DH they had been waiting over an hour. I noticed they did not get seated until we were close to finishing. Just struck me as odd- did they not have an adr or maybe they showed up an hour early? The man seemed a bit confused to be waiting so long. If he didn’t have an adr wouldn’t they have told them how long it could be?

Anyway-

I didn’t get the best pictures here. Fortunately it is pretty easy to find these pictures on the dining board.

First is the pineapple welcome bread which seemed to be much better than last year. It seemed smaller too which was nice b/c last year it was way too much for just DH and I.

I also remember last year that it seemed like they served everyone the same amount of wings, noodles, and pot stickers. It seemed like such a waste but this year we got a smaller amount and saw larger parties with bigger plates. Glad they changed it b/c it seemed like a lot of food was being wasted.

My favorite part of the meal-Wings and pot stickers- Yum
DisneyMay2011onSony166.jpg

Noodles and veggies- Very good. I love all of these items and would be happy to just skip right over the meat to dessert.
DisneyMay2011onSony160.jpg

They do offer typical kids choices such as chicken nuggets, hot dogs, burgers and maybe one other- grilled cheese maybe?
DD had the chicken nuggets and fries. She loved them and I thought they tasted much better than they looked. Way better than the kid nuggets you get at cs. She was thrilled after she ate them all that the waiter offered to bring her another plate of them. She happily accepted the offer and ate most of the second plate too.

Steak and chicken
I love the steak here. The chicken and pork are okay but always seem a bit dry to me. I’d rather eat the other stuff. I also tried the shrimp which was okay, but way too messy for me. I don’t want to spend my time peeling my shrimp. DH hates eating out so I have only so long before he starts getting tired of being in a restaurant. Can’t spend precious eating time peeling shrimp.

Just a note about the steak- the first few pieces were awesome. Towards the end of the meal I got two more and they were not good at all. If you don’t like the way it is cooked ask for some from another skewer. If the last two pieces were all I went by I would have declared the steak disgusting.

DisneyMay2011onSony169.jpg

Yummy bread pudding- I was so looking forward to this since it was my favorite dessert last year. Have to say it lacked something for me this year. Maybe b/c last year the server gave me the caramel topping on the side and this year the server brought it over and dumped it on top. I liked being able to add a bit at a time.
Another great meal at ‘Ohana. While eating my bread pudding I took in that big breath you take in and exhale deeply to make room for the rest of dessert. (Admit it, you have done it!) DH caught a picture mid deep breath which I will not post, but ‘Ohana is one of those meals you need some extra room for.
We will probably skip it next time since we have done it 2 trips in a row, but it remains a favorite of ours.
DisneyMay2011onSony170.jpg

Cost 87.30 or 3 dxdp credits

Just in case anyone is keeping track of how the dxdp adds up- we also got our 3 refillable mugs.

DisneyoncanonMay2011393.jpg

If I remember correctly it was 44.70 for the 3 with tax, but I need to double check that number before I do the final math.

Today was our Magic Kingdom day. Last year we tried Crystal Palace breakfast and CRT dinner. I really wanted to try something new in MK like the Plaza or LTT but when DD announced she wanted to do all character meals and we upgraded to DXDP I figured I might as well do them again. This time we tried CRT for breakfast and CP for dinner.

When you first arrive they bring you some fruit and a few yummy carbs. There were cinnamon rolls, regular croissants and chocolate croissants. I have never seen the chocolate croissants mentioned before so I don’t know if I just never paid attention or if they are new. DH ate all of the regular ones and got all of the choc. We split the cinnamon ones. They were all very yummy and fresh. Caitlin doesn’t really like any breakfast pastries so she was sad she didn’t get anything to start off with. She does eat grapes but didn’t want the ones mixed in with the other fruit.

There are 3 options for adults. A healthy option which is granola and yogurt, which of course was not ordered by this family.

I ordered the puffed French toast with cream cheese filling. I had seen this on many dining reports and it always gets great reviews. It was one of the reasons I was happy to try CRT for breakfast and was really looking forward to it.
DisneyMay2011onSony227.jpg

Doesn’t it just look so good? Yeah, I didn’t like it. It seemed overcooked and the sauce was too much for me. It doesn’t look like much sauce in the picture but it got very soggy and didn’t like the flavor of the sauce. I must have a bad batch b/c everyone else seems to love it. I ate a few bites and then gave up trying to convince myself that it was good.

DH ordered the standard breakfast which had eggs, bacon, sausage, and potatoes.
DisneyMay2011onSony228.jpg

He ate most of it but did not like the sausage. I gladly took it from him and thought it was pretty good.

They only had one option for kids which was eggs, bacon and French
toast sticks.
DisneyMay2011onSony229.jpg

Caitlin does not like any of these items so she wasn’t very happy. She ended up eating the French toast sticks but wasn’t very happy about the options and lack of Mickey waffles or pancakes.

I overheard the next table ask for a larger plate of the kids choices for an adult and the waiter said sure. Just in case you really wanted some French toast sticks.

We saw Cinderella at the entrance.

The princesses were all great with DD. DD is more of a sign my book, smile for a picture and move on type of girl so we don’t mind that characters don’t spend much time with us. They all seemed to comment on her blue dress and how much they liked it. Aurora said that next time she would try to wear her blue dress for DD.

DisneyMay2011onSony234.jpg

The waiter asked if we wanted anything else but I ended up eating the rest of the breakfast rolls and fruit and DH just asked of more plain croissants.

Total 116.06 or 6 dxdp credits
We didn’t decide to add the dxdp until after I made the adr so originally it was on my credit card. On my credit card I was charged 138 something. Not sure it was less once we switched over to the dxdp credits?

Overall I was disappointed I switched from the Plaza to make room for CRT. We probably would have had a better meal there.
I doubt we will return to the castle again. I would recommend trying it once if you want to eat in the castle but if I ever have another little girl into princesses we will stick with Akershus.

We had an early dinner adr at Crystal Palace. I picked 3:15 since it was when they opened for dinner and it was probably when the food would be the freshest.

DD and I had some popcorn around noon to hold us over for our early dinner. DH did not listen to my suggestion to grab a light snack so at 2:30 or so he started to whine that he was hungry. DD and I went on the tea cups which he hates. While we were in I saw DH on the hunt for something to eat. Two minutes later I sent him a text asking what he chose to ruin his dinner with.

Hot dog

This annoyed me for two reasons. DH is already not a fun person to go to a buffet with. He doesn’t eat much to begin with and now he had just eaten a whole hot dog and side of chips. He wouldn’t be eating much at CP
It also annoyed me b/c at the beginning of the trip I told him not to use any dining credits without asking me. He pays no attention to my Disney planning, he just saws up. I had allotted 3 credits of cs and if he had asked I would have told him to use a credit since I knew we would have enough, instead he paid OOP.

Anyway- on to CP.

We were seated on time and headed right for the food. Normally when I go to a buffet I like to try a bunch of things I wouldn’t normally try since you can always get something else. Since I knew DH and DD wouldn’t want to be there long (they wanted to go back to WL to go swimming) I stuck to what I knew I would like.

I had some chicken tenders which were so good, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, some type of beef and the salmon. Everything was very good. The salmon and mashed potatoes were awesome. I picked up 2 pieces of beef and the first one was very good but the second was fatty and gross.

DisneyMay2011onSony271.jpg

My second plate-more of the same, this time with a roll
DisneyMay2011onSony275.jpg

I was going to grab some more salmon but the person ahead of me was taking FOREVER. They had turkey and some other type of beef on the carving station but I didn’t feel like waiting.

DD’s plate – I think I skipped taking a picture of what DH got b/c I am pretty sure it looks exactly the same as hers. Yes, my 30 year old DH and DD have the same exact diet.

DisneyMay2011onSony274.jpg

On to dessert

DisneyMay2011onSony279.jpg

I tried to grab one of everything but I missed a few cookies and some type of cobbler (maybe one or two other things I knew I wouldn’t like)

DH had look like “Are you kidding me?” Hello- research!

The item in the front was mocha flavored. Going around the plate there was a chocolate canoli, banana tart (I didn’t like it but I’m not fond of banana flavored stuff), oatmeal cookie, choc. Chip cookie underneath, a strawbbery cheesecake. I had no idea what the other 2 blobs of stuff on there are or the item with the raspberry is , sorry. My favorite was the cheesecake but everything tasted pretty good.

DH and DD had some soft serve ice cream.

DisneyMay2011onSony280.jpg

Total 97.95 or 3 dining credits

I believe this was the most expensive 1 credit we had followed by Akershus breakfast.

Everything was very good and I am a bit sad I didn’t get to try some more of the other options. I really need to take a vacation with people who actually eat at a buffet.

I really love CP. I love the building- how pretty and bright it is and all the food has been good. We will probably stick to breakfast before parking opening from now on but I wouldn’t mind going back for lunch or dinner. If paying OOP I would stick to lunch or breakfast, not sure dinner was really worth almost $100.
We tried Chef Mickey’s last year and I enjoyed the food much better here.

Chef Mickey's

Once we upgraded to DXDP and I decided to swap out Kona for CM. We probably won’t do the dining plan again and I think the bill at CM will be a lot harder to swallow OOP than Kona.

We tried dinner last year which was okay. I have always wanted to try breakfast after seeing it mentioned on an Unwrapped episode.

You see people say to skip Chef Mickey’s and you wonder how it can be any different than any other character meal.

Overall the food was okay. They have all the same standard offerings as the others, but it just lacked something. The food was warm and I saw everything being replaced constantly. Maybe the food sits under heat in the back or something. Some things were nice and fresh, but other items –like the tater tots- just reminded me of the food we used to get in our school cafeteria

DisneyMay2011onSony346.jpg

DisneyMay2011onSony341.jpg

Overall it was okay. I would not pay the price OOP, where as most of the other character breakfast I would. I am glad we tried it but most likely won’t go back. The food isn’t bad so I wouldn’t avoid it if I had a kid who loved the fab five and really wanted to see them all.

Our server was fine. Last year our waitress pretty much disappeared during dinner and we never got drink refills or anything. This waitress always brought us refills if needed and checked to make sure we had everything we needed. We had an early adr, 7:40 and it wasn’t too busy when we got there but it filled up while we were eating and then there was a log line to check in as we were leaving. If you can get there early it would be worth it.

DisneyMay2011onSony341.jpg

Cost 78.78 or 3 dxdp credits

Great reviews, Diane.

We've never done CRT (two boys who would rather have been beat up rather than eat in a castle with princesses!).

We've also never done Ohanas. We won't do breakfast (not a fan of Stitch or family style), but I keep putting it on the list for dinner but it always gets knocked off. :confused3

We've only done CP for breakfast (not a big fan of the buffets for dinner at Disney), but CP's didn't look too bad.

We prefer Chef Mickey's for breakfast over dinner. The last time we went for dinner in 2004 it was pretty nasty; breakfast, if you go early like you suggested, is not bad.

But I agree with you....I would rather eat at Crystal Palace or one of the other ones.

Caitlin looks really cute with the characters. :)
