During the trip, we our table service meals ate at:

Crystal Palace
Mama Melrose
Kona Cafe
Boma
Restaurant Akershus
Whispering Canyon
'Ohana
Chef Mickey's

Below are the first two nights: Crystal Palace and Mama Melrose. I'll add more soon.

The cast: Mom (me), Dad, A.J. (9), Nick (7), and Sophia (4).

The scene: 8 nights at the Polynesian Resort, our second time to visit WDW as a family though Dad and I had been before kids.

The Dates: July 10 through July 18.

The food: lots of it, most of it good, paid for with the DDP. More on that later.

Dinner #1: The Crystal Palace. Our arrival night we went to Crystal Palace to see Pooh and friends. We also ate there on our previous trip in 2003.

The food was overall quite good. I liked the salmon, vegetables and fruit. A.J. loved the chicken fingers but the other two were too tired and excited to eat much. Prepared salads were also good, and the food was overall an improvement since our last trip.

The one disappointment was dessert. Nick, my chocolate loving boy thought the brownies were awful, and I found the other desserts to be dried out or unappetizing.

Service was very good; our waitress explained where the characters would come from, and she was very attentive brining us refills on our drinks. Character interaction was very good. Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, and Piglet made the rounds in a timely organized manner and we got some great pictures.

I’d recommend this restaurant if you like Pooh, want to eat some decent (though not gourmet) food, and are in or near the Magic Kingdom.

Overall grade: B. We would return here again if we wanted Pooh, but I don't believe the fool alone warrants it.

Dinner #2: Mama Melrose (Fantasmic Package). This was our first time here.

We were seated within 5 minutes of our 6:00 p.m. ADR.

With the package, we automatically got the salad served family style. Both Dad and I loved it (although the kids wouldn’t touch it). Next came the cheese flatbread. Our server told us he would bring us two flatbreads if we wanted them, but he said we’d probably have enough food with just one, and he was right—we had leftovers on everything here.

For entrees, the kids had pasta which they all loved. Dad had Wood-grilled Chicken and I had Eggplant Napoleon. Both of us were very happy with our meals there and would definitely recommend this restaurant for someone wanting Italian inspired food.

For dessert, Dad and the kids had ice cream while I had the Warm Chocolate Truffle cake—absolutely delicious by the way.

Service was good here. Our waiter was pleasant and attentive although he did appear overwhelmed briefly when he was assigned two very large parties all at once, just about the time we were finishing our entrees. He apologized profusely for not getting to our desserts sooner, however, and really did a good job overall.

Overall Grade: A We would return here.

Awesome reviews - thanks! pixiedust:

We're going to CP on our first night too. I'm happy to hear there's salmon b/c ds4 loves Salmon and I hate to feed him the kids' buffet things.

Also looking forward to the family -style salad at MM. We have that booked for the fantasmic package as well. We've eaten there before not on the package and like it so I'm looking forward to going back. I can't get enough salad! My kid won't touch it either.

Great reviews so far! We're planning on hitting many of the same restaurants when we go next April - CP, Kona, Mama Melroses, WC, and Chef Mickey's - so I'll be following this thread!

Thanks for doing the reviews!

Thanks for Mama Melrose review. I am glad I changed Alfredo's to Mama's when we go in Sept :cool1:

Great reviews! Thanks for posting. We are also going to many of the restaurants that you went to: CP for dinner and breakfast, MM FDP, Kona's, Boma and WCC.
I was looking at ordering the eggplant napoleon at MM also. Could you tell me a bit about it as I am not sure what the cannelini bean ragu is like. Just can't picture it in my mind... :joker:

Thanks for the reviews....I plan on going to both of those places on our upcoming trip. I love MM, never had a bad meal there. I am a bit concerned with CP, love Pooh and the gang but I know the food is mediocre at buffets.

Enjoyed reading your reviews ~ Thanx for sharing.

The beans were cooked with some pieces of tomato and onion; three fairly large slices of eggplant were on top, with mozzarella cheese too--a nice amount in no way overwhelming. I'm not sure how to describe the beans except to say that they have the consistency of regular baked beans with about that much liquid (which of course is WAY different than standard American baked beans). I really liked them.

Dinner #3: Kona Café.

Although we’d never eaten here before, I’d heard lots of good things about Kona, and we were not disappointed.

The kids’ menu offered two appetizer choices (covered under DDP): fresh fruit or chicken soup. All my kids had the fresh fruit which was mostly cantaloupe and honeydew chunks. For our appetizers, DH and I both had salads: he the Caesar and I the Kona salad. I found mine to be okay, not great, but definitely way too much to eat.

For entrees, Sophia and Anthony had chicken fingers with fries (they loved them) and Nicholas had a triple-decker grilled cheese sandwich which he declared to be the best grilled cheese he’d ever eaten. My entrée was Macadamia Mahi-mahi; DH’s was Pan Asian Pasta with Chicken. We both loved our food overall although I could have skipped the risotto which came with mine because I found it nothing special. The portions here are huge, and I only finished about half of my fish.

Desserts at Kona are legendary and for good reason. The kids’ menu now limits kids on the DDP to two choices: either blue raspberry Jello or a brownie sundae. Nick and Sophia had the Jello which they liked a lot; it’s attractively presented in as a large square with colorful Mickey sprinkles underneath. Sophia had a blast hunting for the sprinkles. Anthony had the brownie sundae and let me taste it—very, very good brownie under there with typical vanilla ice cream. DH had the Chocolate Macadamia Nut Tart which he just loved. It was so huge he couldn’t finish it. I opted for the Tropical Mouse (that’s what the waiter called it) which was a light fruit mouse filled with passionfruit filling. It was superb in every sense of the word.

Our service was very good here with an attentive server who brought drink refills and was attentive to the kids and knowledgeable about the menu items.

We would definitely return here. The atmosphere, location, food and service make Kona a worthwhile stop.

Can't wait to read the rest. Thanks so much for taking the time to report!

We too are staying at Poly in Sept/Oct with DDP and have ADRs for both Kona and 'Ohana. Can't wait.

So no more Kiddie Kone? That is disappointing. We are going there on DP in the fall and my kids would have loved this! Maybe one of us will order it with our meals and trade them for the brownie sundae. :)

Yes, that's right. I was a little disappointed too, but my kids had no clue such a thing was ever an option and so didn't mind at all. I have to say that the brownie sundae was very good--I mean that--and the attraction of the Mickey influenced Jello was very big with my two younger ones (as I couldn't believe they'd pick boring old Jello over a brownie sundae!).

Someone at a nearby table was eating the Kiddie Kone and it's just huge, way too big for most kids, so the newer smaller brownie sundae is really more appropriate anyway...in my opinion that is.

Don't deprive yourself, though, because the rest of the desserts there are just incredible.

Dinner #4: Boma

We spent the day at Animal Kingdom and then headed over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our first trip to Boma. Our reservations were for 5:10, and we were seated right on time.

Because straws are not allowed at the lodge, the server brought the kids’ milks in disposable coffee cups with lids; the kids thought that was great, by the way.

It’s hard for me to remember specifics here because there were so many different foods to try. I had two kinds of soup (a chicken stew and a gumbo), many kinds of prepared salads, and some marvelous salmon. The potatoes with “Afritude” were very good and not strange at all. My husband liked the prime rib but said the roasted chicken was just okay.

Anthony and Sophia had standard chicken fingers while Nicholas discovered the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and ate at least six quarters (and I might have missed a few in my count).

We all liked the fresh fruit: pineapple, strawberries, melons. The watermelon rind salad was very good. The hardest part about Boma is trying everything because the food is so good and so unique that I found myself wanting a taste of everything but not having room. I liked their cold prepared salads the best. The only thing I did not like was a traditional African lamb dish; it tasted too much of cinnamon for my liking, but the rest of the food more than made up for it.

Desserts are very good here. We ate several small mango tarts (just out of this world delicious), some blueberry tarts, chocolate mousses and zebra domes. The kids ate what looked like freshly prepared homemade chocolate chip cookies; Anthony declared them wonderful.

All in all, we enjoyed this meal tremendously and would recommend it to anyone. The only downside is the location; although the Animal Kingdom Lodge is beautiful, traveling there is a hassle, and using the Disney busses took us about one hour to get back to the Polynesian.
