July 3 - Dinner
Yachtsman Steakhouse - Absolutely the best meal of the trip. From the beginning everything was perfect. We got lucky and had Oscar as our server. I told him I had heard of him and he seemed very pleased. They brought out bread and roasted garlic with butter. The garlic was roasted to perfection, absolutely smooth and not fibery at all. Great way to start the meal. We ordered a bottle of red wine that I was not familiar with but it is now my favorite--very smooth: M. Chapoutier Crosez-Hermitage, Rhone. My three year old order chicken fingers and french fries and they were the real thing and his favorite of the trip. They also brought his meal immediately without being asked before they brought everyone else's appetizers. (Very good for a small child) My DH and I ordered an appetizer to split. They split it in the kitchen on separate plates without being asked. I'm glad we split it, it was more than enough with 1/2 the order. It was very tasty: Tomato and Buffalo Mozzarella - vine ripened tomatoes, imported mozzarella, balsamic vinegar and basil oil. Refreshing and just right. The kids skipped appetizers. The two teenagers ordered the filet mignon with crushed potatoes and roasted shallots in a red wine sauce. Kate ordered a side of creamed spinach. Both said they really liked it. My DH ordered the T-Bone Steak (24 oz.) with red win butter and roasted garlic gratin potatoes. I had the Black Angus New York Strip Steak with roasted garlic gratin potatoes and peppercorn sauce. I particularly liked the garlic gratin potatoes. Very creamy but firm. The kids passed on dessert but my DH and I had the dessert sampler platter for two. This is the way to go. Decadence on a plate. LOL! My 3 year old had the Mickey's dessert puzzle, a white chocolate puzzle with "sugar" paint and a vanilla cupcake. My DH said the person who thought of this was a genius!! It kept him busy and occupied while we enjoyed a nice leisurely dessert. Oscar had let Kate try to help open the wine and she had broken the cork off in the bottle. No problem. Oscar comes back with a cheesecloth and a carafe and strains the wine into the carafe. After dinner, Oscar presented Kate with a beautiful long stem red rose. This dinner was a close to perfection as a restaurant can get.

Lunch - Sci-Fi
Kate had a turkey sandwich that she said was very good. Evan(16) ate a corn dog and fries from the children's menu and Andrew had his chicken nuggets and fries. This time they were nuggets and not fingers. DH had the barbecue sandwich and I had a burger and fries. All was good, not great. Evan also had a vanilla shake that he really liked. The glow in the dark ice cube drink was a big hit with Andrew. We love the atmosphere here. The food is good enough.

Snack - Frozen chocolate covered banana - what can I say?

Dinner - Le Cellier

We were really looking forward to this because of all the recommendations we had heard. I'm sorry to say we were disappointed. They brought bread sticks to the table and they were OK. Everyone raves about the pretzel bread and I guess if you want to eat a pretzel it's good, but not with my meal. I also tried the cheddar cheese soup for an appetizer along with Kate and neither of us were very impressed. It's OK, nothing to rave about. My husband had the Asian Shrimp Cocktail with wasabi slaw and horseradish chili sauce. He said it was good but he kept laughing about the way it was presented. They place a take out chinese cardboard box on the plate and make it look as though the appetizer is spilling out on the plate from the box. He thought it was weird. For our entrees I had a special surf and turf that they were doing that night. The lobster was good but the steak just didn't have any taste to it. I didn't finish it. Kate had Salmon while DH had Tuna. Neither thought they were cooked enough. Evan had the filet mignon with maple barbeque sauce and cream cheese mashed potatoes. He didn't like the barbeque sauce. I had asked to substitute my roasted potatoes with the cream cheese mashed potatoes too and I wished I hadn't. I don't know if it was because it was July 4th and they were so crowded but the potatoes were cold and not very appetizing. Andrew didn't even like his chicken nuggets. They were hard. I'll have to give this one another try later and see if it had anything to do with the holiday. No one got dessert. I did try to Ice wine. It was OK. It reminded me of Japanese plum wine. Really too sweet for my taste and not worth the $11.00 a glass.

Lunch - Whispering Canyon Cafe

We really enjoyed this lunch. The place is a lot of fun and the food is exceptionally good. DH had the Cowpoke Pork Sandwich - slow-smoked pulled pork with baked beans and steak fries. I had the Wild Bill's Fried Chicken with corn on the cob, baked beans and steak fries and Evan had a cheeseburger and fries. All three of these meals were very good and the fried chicken is the best I've had in WDW including 50's Prime Time Cafe which I thought was the best until now. Andrew had "real" chicken fingers again and until this vacation (he eats a lot of chicken) I didn't realize there was such a big difference in them. Kate had the Little Nutty Chicken Salad and the smell from the salad was wonderful. I kept wishing I had gotten it. It was mixed greens and marinated grilled chicken breast, Tillamook cheddar, candied walnuts and honey-roasted walnut vinaigrette. Best looking salad I've seen. The interaction with the wait staff was wonderful and all of us enjoyed the antics.

Dinner - Liberty Tree Tavern

Everyone enjoyed this meal and the character interaction is one of the best on property. They bring out bread and salads with drinks to begin with. Then they serve platter style, ham, turkey, flank steak, mac-n-cheese, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans. It very tasty and more than enough. The kids asked for more mac-n-cheese. For dessert they bring out a very yummy apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream. This dessert was so good I wished I had saved more room for dessert.
Total including tip - $124.32

Breakfast - Crystal Palace
Andrew was chosen to be "Chef of the Day" and open up the restaurant that morning. (pixie dust) The breakfast buffet was scrumptious. Was too many good things to be considered a regular breakfast. The breakfast lasagna was heavenly. It's kind of a bread pudding with berries inside. The cheesy potatoes were worth a second helping also. They had all the normal breakfast items, eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, waffles, pancakes, grits, biscuits, potatoes (very tasty), muffins, cereals, fruit. You name it, they had it along with juice, coffee and soft drinks. This was a great way to start the day and get a jump on the parks at opening time. Highly recommend this breakfast.

Snack - Dole Whip Float--To die for.

Dinner - Narcoossee's
Greeted upon arrival by the manager "Todd" and escorted to our table by the window. I had spoken with Todd earlier in the week to request special desserts for dinner. The view from our table was beautiful overlooking the water and Cinderella Castle in the background. We started with appetizers and Andrew ate all the centers out of the hard rolls in the basket. Then he'd put them back in and it looked at those no one had eaten the bread but when you picked up each roll they were all hollowed out. LOL!! I had the Prince Edward Island Mussels simmered with stout beer, red onion, and fresh thyme. These were very good and I had the recommended glass of white wine to go with the mussels. I can't remember the name but it's listed on the menu under the mussels and it was very good. My DH had the Blue Crab Soup and helped me finish the mussels. Both teenagers had Narcoossee's Chowder - lobster, fresh fish and shellfish in a rich and creamy bisque. Both of them liked it. Andrew had chicken fingers. (It's all he'll eat.) For dinner I had the Maine Lobster Tail and Filet Mignon with potato gratin and drawn butter. It was good but not as good as Yachtsman. DH had the same thing and we had a bottle of Heller Merlot. Kate had the stuffed flounder, not on the menu, and proclaimed it the best meal of the week. Evan had the Glazed Free-Range Chicken Breast with sweet pepper reduction, wild mushroom ravioli and sauteed spinach. Kate ate his spinach. For dessert I had pre-ordered special desserts and then several waiters came to the table and presented them all at the same time. Kate had the white chocolate glass slipper with a dark chocolate teardrop. Rasberries were placed in the slipper on top of a white chocolate mousse. Cinderella Castle was silkscreened in chocolate on the plate and her name was written at the bottom in dark chocolate. Andrew had the "Dog Bones", a puff pastry filled with chocolate cream covered with chocolate on the outside and little candy dog bones. The plate had the dalmations silkscreened in chocolate on the plate. These weren't that great for the taste but it couldn't be beat for presentation for a small child. Evan got tuxedo strawberries (6 of them) and his name written on the bottom of the plate in chocolate. My DH and I split a miniature wedding cake done all in white chocolate and cream cheese filling. It had a white sugar "Cinderella Castle" on top and was absolutely adorable. It looked small but the two of us could barely finish it because it was so rich. This meal was wonderful.

Snack - PB&J Shake at Tune-In Lounge - heaven.

Dinner - Hollywood Brown Derby
My husband left at this point for a business trip to Mexico so it's only the kids and me now. We booked the Fantasmic Dinner Package and asked to substitute (you guessed it) chicken fingers for Andrew's meal. They were glad to do it. He didn't want a salad, he didn't want a dessert, nothing, just chicken. I had a glass of cabernet sauvignon and Evan and I both started with the Portabello mushroom ravioli. I highly recommend it. Kate had the Potato Crusted Lump Crab Cake with Napa slaw tossed in citrus beet vinaigrette and a classic tartar sauce. He also enjoyed this. Kate and I both had the Pan-Fried Grouper over balsamic roasted asparagus, lemon plugra butter sauce, topped with Bermuda onion marmalade. We both pronounced this a winner!! Evan had the Char-grilled Center Cut Filet of Beef with dijon crushed red potatoes, horseradish aioli and merlot jus. He said "it was a good steak." We were all so full that no one wanted dessert. Our waiter, who was very good and attentive, informed us it came with the package and we told him we knew but we just couldn't eat another bite. He then offered that if we wanted to come back later in the evening to just let him know when we came and he'd be glad to box something up for us, no charge. I thought this was quite generous but we never took him up on the offer. Still, I was a little suprised by the offer.

Lunch - Rainforest Cafe - Animal Kingdom
It's always relaxing to go in this place. It's a nice refreshing cool break from the hot sun. It seems the day we were there everybody and his brother were ordering the volcano dessert and we kept hearing the waiters yell "Volcano". I started out with a "Ricky" and made it non-alcoholic. Refreshing drink. Kate ordered the Rainforest Pita Quesadillas - grilled chicken, roasted peppers, caramelized onions and melted cheese on grilled pita bread, served with fresh pico de gallo and sour cream. Evan had a burger, plain with ketchup and cheese and french fries. Andrew had chicken fingers but this time they were shaped like little dinosaurs and he got a kick out of that. I had the Rasta Pasta - grilled chicken, penne pasta, pesto, broccoli, red peppers and spinach, tossed with Alfredo sauce. I really like this and it's a favorite of mine. No room for dessert. Good reliable lunch spot.

Dinner - 'Ohana
We were seated beside the window and also just in front of where the kids were playing the coconut games and the hulla-hoop games. This was a very pleasant surprise. We liked this a lot more than I thought we would. Again, we substituted Andrew's dinner for a child's dinner and there was no problem, just the same price. He did eat the coconut and pineapple bread though. They serve you family style in the center of the table on a lazy susan. They bring out all the other food besides the meats first. Stir-fried green beans and onions, salad with honey-lime dressing, shrimp and vegetable wontons, honey coriander chicken wings and stir-fried rice. The salad was delicious. I'm not a big salad person and this salad was very refreshing due to the dressing. I could have eaten it all night long. The chicken wings were exceptionally good too. They begin to bring to your table different meats on long skewers that have been cooked over the open fire that was visible from our table. First they brought turkey and it was very good. We all thought it tasted more like chicken though. Then they brought out marinated sirloin steak in big chunks and this was tender and juicy. The grilled tiger shrimp were the best though. I only wish you didn't have to peel them. We didn't have room left when they brought the pork so we didn't try that. I ordered a Lapu Lapu - Myers rum and tropical juices served in a pineapple and topped with Bacardi. I had heard so much about this on these boards. This drink was missing the tropical juices and tasted like pure alcohol. I could hardly drink it! Won't be ordering one of those again. Evan and Andrew both decided they wanted The Beach Bomb for dessert (Hawaiian shaved ice with sweet rainbow syrup) even though they had already brought out pineapple spears and caramel sauce. Since they were getting extra dessert, Kate ordered the Coconut Snowball - coconut ice cream rolled in toasted coconut.
This dinner was very good and a pleasant surprise.

We also ate breakfasts at the YC concierge and at the Poly concierge. Most breakfasts consisted of pastries, cereals, and bagels. Both lounges had wonderful homemade cookies, oatmeal, chocolate chip, and sugar. The YC concierge had one evening where they had mussels and clams in a garlic butter sauce and they were to die for. The desserts at the YC lounge were a lot better than the ones at the Poly also. The evening choices for the kids seemed to be better at YC too. Always a "hot" offering even for the kids. Poly had one night where they had barbeque ribs and chicken strips and they were pretty good. The rest of the time, I didn't care that much for what they had, especially the desserts. One night the Poly had strawberry short cake which I was thrilled to see (it's one of my favorite desserts) until I tasted it and they didn't even use strawberries, they used strawberry jam. The guava-orange juice there is good but they only had it out in the afternoon and only on two days that I was there. The lounge at the Poly was also worn and the sofas were dirty. I didn't care for it at all. The lounge at the YC, though smaller than the Poly, was clean and very organized. I enjoyed the lounge at the YC much more.

Those are my dining reviews. Hope I didn't go on and on too long.

Thank you VERY much for the thorough reviews!

I'm looking at the prices and the descriptions, but just wanted to be sure (for our budgeting purposes) - were there 4 or 5 in your party?

Thanks,

Can I be one of your kids? They ate GOOD that week! =)

Thanks for the reviews! Loved them!

Thanks for the reviews! Sounds like you had some great meals.

If you don't mind me asking, how much were each of these special desserts? Thanks!

Can you get the individual wedding cakes at Yatchsman steakhouse? We will be eating there for our 8th anniversary and would like to suprise husband with one of these.

Thanks for all of your reviews they are very helpful!! Last summer my then 11 year old DS was picked to be chef of the day at Crystal Palace we knew nothing of it before then but we felt it was such an honor to be selected. It is something he will have as a memory for the rest of his life.

Wonderful review.:)
You had some terrific meals, I can't wait to start making our PS. I do have to agree with you, we also prefer the YC concierge.

Thanks for the great reviews. For a while there, YSH was getting some poor reviews so its great to hear about all the wonderful meals people have been having there lately! :D

Thank you for the great information. Most of these are my "picks" of places we want to try.

I don't mean to be rude, but, did I read your Narcoossee's bill total correctly? $400??!!

Thank you so much for the great reviews. It is dinner time now and after reading your review, I am hungry. I have wanted to try Narcooses and I think we will and also go back to the Yachtsman Steakhouse and the Brwon Derby.

We have had Oscar as our server at the Yachtsman several times and he is super! Last time we had a young man named Zack, who was good, but Oscar is the best at WDW!

Great reviews! Thanks!

I appreciate your taking the time to post your reviews. It makes it much easier to decide whether I might like a restaurant. Most comments regarding restaurants on planning boards like this just say good or No. Your comments are very helpful.

Yes, that meal at Narcoossee's was over $400 but that did include an $80 tip. They went out of their way for us and I tipped very well. The first half of the trip thru tuesday there were 5 of us, from Wednesday on there was only 4. I'm glad you all enjoyed the reviews. I too like reading reviews--I think it really helps to make PS decisions. I agree--Oscar is great! He really made the meal even more special than it was. I'm now wondering what took us so long to finally try Yachtsman Steakhouse. We won't be missing it in the future!

Oh, I forgot. The dog bones and the Cinderella Slipper desserts were $8/each. The tuxedo strawberries were $2.50/each so 6 of them were $15 and the miniature wedding cake was $25.
