WOW - I'm honored to have you here Brenda!! As you've seen I took several of your tips.:thumbsup2 That French martini was amazing!!!

 You know how much we enjoyed Jiko! I'm excited to hear about sitting at the Cooking Place! Can't wait for the rest of dinner.:goodvibes

I believe it was after reading your review of JIKO that I decided we must try it. Thanks Sheryl!!!!!:thumbsup2

Great start for Jiko...can't wait for more!!! Love, Love, Love the drink pics!!!

Somehow I knew you would.;)

Onto the meal! Before I forget, I got caught (by our server Shellie) taking a pic of the embroidered cloth napkin. They said since I thought so much of the napkin they would give me one to take home as a souvenir.:rotfl:

We were lucky enough to have Shellie as our server for the evening. She is by far the best and most knowledgeable server we've ever had at WDW. During our conversation the DIS boards came up and she said she is very familiar with many DISers! She enthusiastically agreed to make some recommendations for us throughout the meal with regard to both food and wine choices.

For appetizers DS & GF both ordered flatbreads (sorry no pics) - Artichoke & Pappadew with Goat Cheese, Arugula and a Cilantro Yogurt sauce and the BBQ Chicken flatbread with Grilled Onions, Julienned Apples, African BBQ sauce and Cheese. They were both very good but the BBQ Chicken was the better of the two.

Shellie recommended DH & I share the "Sampler Platter for 2" which is not on the menu. It's a combo plate of some of their best appetizers - Lamb Patis, Lentil Pastilla, Maize and Sweet Potato Tamales and Fire Roasted Shrimp. The wine she chose for us with this course was a Fairview Shiraz which paired very well with the platter. This platter was amazingly good and having the chefs describe everything as they prepared it was the best part of the evening for a foodie like me!

For the entrees - DS & GF both chose the "Filet with Mac & Cheese". I knew I'd at least get a taste of this famous dish.;) I had decided a long time ago on the Maize-crusted Sturgeon with Vegetables of the Moment only to find out from the chef that the Sturgeon had been replaced with Black Cod on the menu just days before. I asked Shellie about the Cod and she just said she wouldn't recommend it. DH & I decided to split our entrees so we could both experience a little of each. The man loves his scallops so it was a no-brainer for him - Pan-roasted Jumbo Scallops with Golden Brown Mealie "Pap" and spicy Tomato-Onion "Chakalaka" (I did enjoy saying chakalaka!!). I on the other hand was completely undecided so I asked for Shellie's help. She didn't hesitate and recommended the "Short Rib" dish, in her words we'd be "very happy" with these two dishes. So I ordered the Kenyan Coffee BBQ-braised Beef Short Rib with Crushed Idaho and Sweet Potatoes, Onion-Garlic Sauce. This is probably the last dish I expected to be eating this night, but am I glad she suggested it. The scallops were excellent but that huge short rib was unbelievable. The meat literally fell off the bone and there was surprisingly not as much fat as I'd expected. The crushed potatoes in the onion garlic sauce were fantastic. I did get a taste of the Filet with Mac & Cheese and I see now why everyone raves about it. DS & GF were in heaven!! The wine we were served with the entrees was a Spice Route Chenin Blanc which was great with both entrees.

I really was stuffed at this point but Shellie insisted I eat dessert with the rest of my gang. DS & GF both ordered the Tanzanian Chocolate Cheesecake with Chocolate Ganache, Amarula Sauce and Lavender Ice cream. I had to taste that ice cream - very unique subtle lavender flavor. They both loved the cheesecake. DH & I ordered the Pistachio Creme Brulee, what a great ending to such a fabulous meal.

To sum it up - WE LOVE JIKO !!! It is an amazing dining experience. Will we go again? In a heartbeat!

I'm glad to hear a good review of Jiko. I'm debating wether or not to eat there next year. I've eaten there twice before, but didn't really care for it either time. But I have the deluxe DDP this trip, and am thinking it would be cool to eat at every signature restaurants, since I have more then enough credits and nights to do so.

WOW what great pics of JIKO! We loved eating at JIKO. Wasn't it fabulous?
My review of JIKO will be coming up soon. Damn didn't know about the sampler platter for 2! Would have gotten that for sure.
Wish I could eat there tonight! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I would surely give it another try! If you do get to eat at all of the signature restaurants in one trip you'd better post a review when you get back.;)

Jiko - WOW!

Great review and pics. Thanks for sharing. :woohoo:

It was amazing.:goodvibes

The Sampler Platter was an explosion of flavors, just incredible.:thumbsup2

Wow, That looks even better than when we were there! That sampler platter is something else! Do you think that was offered because you chose to sit at the Cooking Place?

Too bad the sturgeon turned into a cod!;) But it really didn't matter at all, the whole meal looked wonderful!

Thanks for sharing it with us!:goodvibes

No it was offered to anyone. We were the only ones seated at the Cooking Place and we saw them prepare a few others. We were lucky to have Shellie suggest it. I was a great deal at $20.:goodvibes

Great pictures and review!! At all the restaurants I would be interested in eating at also. :thumbsup2

In fact, I just made reservations at the CG and Jiko for our trip in April today! My taste buds are anxiously awaiting more pictures!

subscribing to your review! I love it so far. :yay: My family and I are heading down on Jan 6th for 8 nights and We are eating at a few restaurants that you eat at on your trip to disney!

Great reviews !! :goodvibes On cue with my findings of those restaurants...yepper gotta love that huge short rib.:thumbsup2

Thanks for the "french martini" tip, never had one, Im usually a dirty martini person.;) Very interested in your findings of Kona since I (along with the rest of my party) was very, very dissappointed in dinner there.:sad2:

I'd never had a french martini before - it was excellent! I ordered one later during the trip which wasn't nearly as good as CG's!

I'm glad to hear we weren't the only ones disappointed in KONA. It gets such rave reviews and this was our second time not happy.:sad2: Hopefully I can get it posted later today or early tomorrow.

KONA

Let me begin by saying we went to KONA for the first time last year and weren't blown away by the food, atmosphere or service. Some exceptions were the KONA Chowder, the Macadamia Mahi-Mahi and the Macadamia Nut dessert. Two of these dishes are no longer on the menu. Two of us ordered the Teriyaki Beef and the Pineapple Salsa on top was frozen on one and forgotten on the other. I talked the family into trying it again this year and we were actually pretty excited about the new menu, especially the Tuna Oscar!!

So here's how I started the night - Skyy Berry Martini (surprised?)

WDW2007082.jpg

Sandy was our server for the night and she was very good. For appetizers DH & I both had the crabcakes, DS had the Sticky Wings and his GF had the Pot Stickers. The crabcakes and the wings were very good, the potstickers were cold and had no taste at all.

Entrees were a disaster. Three of us eagerly ordered the Tuna Oscar. Being from the South we love our Fried Green Tomatoes and how good do they sound topped with Tempura Crab and TUNA!!! Well the tomatoes were so hard you couldn't cut them, the Tempura Crab bites were all Tempura, the Wasabi Hollandaise was missing the Wasabi, but the Tuna was good. The other entree ordered was the Pan Asian Noodles which was OK.

The desserts at KONA are always great and thankfully this night they didn't disappoint - Chocolate Macadamia Nut Tart, Chocolate Fondue and Kilahuea Torte.

DH & I salvaged the night having these with dessert - Mudslide Martini and Vanilla Russian.:goodvibes

Our rating: :thumbsup2 Will we return? No, there are too many other places that we'd like to try. KONA is just not for us.:guilty:
