Dining plans

Hello all! I am new to the DIS boards, I'm sure this has been asked but how do the dining plans work? I have seen mention of points? Also I have seen people comment that the portions are generous. Is it likely 2 adults could share a meal, or an adult and child? I can't decide if the dining plans would be worth it for us.

From what I have read on here the dining plans are not worth it at DL. You are issued vouchers in dollar amounts, and if you buy a meal for $12, and you use a $15 voucher, you don't get change back. I like to have my vacation payed for before I leave home, so I prefer to use gift cards. I look at all the menus and figure out about how much $$ we need. Then I buy cards in the right amount.

Meals can be very generous. Especially the chicken at the Plaza Inn. We often split 3 adult meals between the 5 of us. We also bring a lot of snacks into the park with us.

Big no to the dining plan. As the PP mentioned you're just using vouchers of dollar amounts and won't get change back.

What they said. At Disneyland, the dining plan is a big no-go. Don't waste your money.
