Here's how we decided. We took a look at the dining database on the sticky at the top of the restaurant board to figure out what it would cost us per day. We planned two character meals, as well as a Fantasmic dinner package. We planned to bring breakfast food with us (mainly so we could eat quick and get out to the parks in the morning). Then we figured up what all of the rest of the counter service meals would cost us - very roughly of course. When we added all of that up it was a more expensive than the dining plan - not a whole lot more, but maybe $100-$200. So, we booked the dining plan and added two more table service reservations. For two meals we were able to eat at nicer places than we would have out of pocket. We can't really count that as money saved, but basically our meals were upgraded. It worked really well for us - a family of 4 (DS1.5 shared with DS5). Something that we learned this time was that the buffet meals worked MUCH better for our boys. So we will remember that next time. Our meals at Hollywood & Vine and Crystal Palace went much more smoothly than Coral Reef for example. If they only intended to eat counter service, breakfast in the room, and maybe one character meal I don't think it would be that good of a deal for them.
