Dining Plan and Taxes Question

My wife and I are trying to figure out whether or not the Dining Plan is worth it, considering all the changes made this year. I have a couple of questions, that maybe someone can help answer.

1. Are meals taxed at WDW? If so, what is the percent?
2. If meals are taxed, are taxes included in the Dining Plan or not like tips?

Thanks.

Dining tax in Orange County (Almost all of Disney is in Orange County) is 6.5%

Dining tax at All Stars and Pop (Different County) is 7%

Dining plan covers tax, so all that you'll pay is tips and any uncovered items at TS locations on the DDP

Worth noting, when we went in March I discovered that they always round up for tip...If your 6.5% tax would be 1.0421, they charge you $1.05.

1. Yes, 6.5%, most places, but 7% at AKL and the AllStars resorts.

2. Yes, taxes are included in the DDP

Also consider the convenience of knowing all your meals are paid for before you even get down there and of being able to order whatever you want, without even glancing at the price.

So, do they bill you for the tip at the TS meals?

We never carry cash so will it be ok to put the tip on our CC/Bank Card?

Thanks

Tip is discretionary and you are not billed for tip unless...

You are using the DDE Card
You are a party of 6 or more

If you use the DDE Card or are a party of 6 or more you are charged 18% gratuity with the option to leave more if you so desire.

There's a whole tipping thread stickied on the dining board.

Do you know how I would go about putting the tip on my CC then if we don't have any additional items to pay for?

Do they bring you a receipt to sign that you can put it on?

Thanks.

I suppose the Dining Plan, just like the individual meals if you go without the Plan, is taxed too at the same rate of 6.5 percent?

Ok - so set me straight.

Say my bill is $60 (2 adult meals on DDP and 1 child DDP meal, the OOP (the meals are usually $7.50 or so) for my 1 year old, and tax).

The 2 adult and the 1 child meals are covered. As is the tax. So I will get a bill for the $7.50 + tax on that, right? So $8.03. That's fine and dandy - I will just add the tip onto that for the whole meal.

But what if the little guy didn't get his own meals - just shared with us. So everything we ordered was on the DDP. Do we still get a receipt that will allow us to charge a tip?

I am so green at this - I need someone to walk me through each step :)

TIA!

It might be, but you don't "see" the tax. For 2008 the plan is 37.99 per adult and 9.99 per 3-9 year old, and they don't charge tax on top of that. And when you eat, you won't see tax either.

It's one of the things you have to remember, when figuring out if the DDP is for you. Look at the menus of restaurants you'll likely go to, see what you would likely eat. For the items included in the dining plan (if you're getting the basic plan but you order an appetizer, that will be out of pocket so don't include that in the calculations directly) add it up, add tax to that. Compare that total to the total of 37.99 per adult + 9.99 per 3-9 year old, and see which way comes out better for you.

I haven't done it yet (we're light eaters, DS can't eat most of the "kid's meals", and we're vegetarian, and we cannot justify the dining plan for us yet, though I'm trying) but I have read that you will always get a bill. The charge might be zero, if you didn't order anything beyond, but you will see what the various tip percentages on the food you ordered is. So if you ordered the $17 noodle bowl at Brown Derby, you'll see the tip amounts for that, and if you ordered filet mignon somewhere, you'll see the tip amounts for that (so you don't need a calculator). And then you can leave the tip in cash (people say it's good to write CASH on the tip line), credit card, disney gift card, disney rewards card, disney dollars, etc.

Assuming you are not a party of 6 or more or using the DDE card
With the DDP, on a meal using only DDP credits, you will get a bill showing what the tips would be for 18% and 20% and a space to write in what you would like to tip.

If you are tipping cash, just write cash in the line and leave the cash on the table.

If you are tipping cash, just write cash in the line and give the cash to the server.

If you are using a CC, your room key, Disney Rewards, Disney Dollars, etc - write in how much you would like to leave for a tip. Hand the receipt with the card to the server and they will run that for you.

Re Tax on the DDP, you are not charged any tax. You simply use your meal credits to pay for the meal and the tip is additional - and to be figured on the food total only.

You have it right they will either bring you a bill showing the items not covered by the DDP and you could tip the whole amount when you pay for that but if you do not have any extras they will still allow you to tip on CC and bring you a slip to sign just for the tip.

There is no need to tip at CS locations where you place an order, get your food and sit down at a table that you find. :goodvibes

The All Stars are 7%, but Pop is 6.5%. :thumbsup2
Aubriee mentioned AKL being 7% as well, but I don't know about that one.

OK, I just looked up the maps on RandMcNally.com and it shows AKL as being in Orange County. Something funny though, the line for Orange County dips down and around the All Star resorts. I'm not sure that the map is right about that, unless it's been annexed in from another county??? Hmmm... :confused3

Well, since I was at Jiko in March and I happen to have my baggie o'receipts right here, let me check AKL...

Asia Slush Cart - Pretzel with salt $3.29 - Tax .22. 6.5% tax is .21385 so that seems to be at 6.5% (AK)

Jiko - (5 adults - for those playing along at home). $140.36 - Tax 9.13. 6.5% tax is 9.1234 so that seems to be 6.5% as well.

(Also excellent examples of how Disney rounds up the tax :thumbsup2)

Thanks for the clarification on Pop, that always confuses me. I've never stayed there and I always have it placed next to All Stars in my head. to me for thinking like that.
