Dining Opinions

Our family is visiting the DLR this summer and I wanted to run our dining plans by you all. Any advice and suggestions you can give are greatly appreciated. Also, how many courses do you typically order at a nice dinner? Are there restaurants that we should dress up for?

I would wear "business casual" for dinner at Steakhouse 55 and Napa Rose. At least I think that's the right term - collared shirt (even if it's a polo shirt or Hawaiian shirt) and slacks for men, and a dress or nice slacks and blouse for women. You'll probably see some people there that are VERY dressed up, also. For Vineyard Room I'd go with nicer park attire, e.g. nicer shorts and a polo shirt as opposed to a tank top or t-shirt. But it's Disney, so they aren't going to throw you out at any of those places if you show up in park attire. I think you would feel a bit out-of-place in park attire at Steakhouse 55 and Napa Rose, though.

We typically order an appetizer (or two) to share, then each order an entree, and we usually get dessert, though sometimes we share that, too. I've been known to order an appetizer for my entree, though. Especially if there's something on the dessert menu I really want to make sure that I leave room for!

One restaurant I don't see on your list is the Trattoria at DCA - I think it's petty good, and it has a much better selection than Cafe Orleans, in case you might want to consider another DCA restaurant in the mix.

It looks like you have a wonderful plan to eat your way around some of the nicer places to eat. I agree with the pp about dress codes at Disney. I wouldn't wear shorts to the steakhouse or Napa.

I'm bad and always look at the dessert menu first to see how many courses I order! My husband always enjoys an appetizer before dinner, main course and then either split a dessert or one each. I have been known to order an appetizer as main course just so I have room for a dessert to myself

Would you replace Steakhouse 55 the first night with Hook's Pointe? Or would you eat in DD? The reason I am asking is because that meal is the first thing we'll probably do after check-in. This is our first time ever at DLR and I want that first night to be really special. I'm afraid Steakhouse 55 might take too long. After we eat, we're going into DL!

I think I wrote you earlier about this when you first asked about DLH restaurants, but we weren't impressed with Hook's Point. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't that great. I have heard much better things about Steakhouse 55. What time are your reservations? If you're among the first dinner seating, you can probably mention to your server that you are in a hurry, and they will try to be prompt.

One other question after looking at your wonderful dining itinerary:

CAN I COME WITH YOU??!! Yum!

Wow, lucky you! Those are some really great places to eat. I have been there many times and still haven't eaten at all of those. I am sure you will have a fantastic time with those choices! Please take pictures and tell us all about them (The sticky- Dining reviews with photos, would love to have pictures of the food from all of those places too!).

I agree with avalon451 re: Hook's Pointe - it's just not a stand-out restaurant at all...it's like eating at an Applebee's or some place like that, only with higher prices. I think you'll have a much better meal/dining experience at Steakhouse 55. But if you're in a hurry to get to the parks, why not just go to the parks and dine at one of the counter service places?

I would have to suggest the Carnation Cafe for lunch one day too. They have a potato soup that is so yummy It is going to be our first stop when we go back My mouth waters thinking about it, and I don't generally like potato soup

Why not try a dd restaurant like Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen, or Catal? They are better than some of your choices, and probably more reasonable.

What are you planning to do in DL that night ? I sure couldn't ride many attractions after a big sit down meal. But if you are just strolling and seeing fireworks, I can understand.

Instead of Carnation Cafe, may I suggest Riverbelle Terrace. This is where they have the Mickey Pancakes.
