we won't be staying there, we'll be at por, do I have to make dinner ressies to eat at AKL? What restaurants are there that are good eats? (we're looking to try news things, and I really want to see the place, too):thumbsup2

Hi there!

You definitely need to make ADRs. We stayed there for Christmas and ate three times at Boma: Flavors of Africa. The buffet there is amazing has lots of selections for varying tastes. They have items that are readily recognizable to the somewhat exotic. All three times we left happy and full. the Zebra Dome desserts there are a MUST!

Hope this helps! :thumbsup2

We stayed at POR over New Year's and we had dinner on New Year's Eve at Boma. You definitely need to make your ADR. It was very good and the AKL is soooo beautiful. We had a wonderful time checking it out. We really liked their gift shop, too. Definitely give it a try. You'll be glad you did!

We like Jiko at AKL. IMO it is worth 2 dining plan credits, as it is very expensive, but we have consistently had excellent meals and service there.

AKL is beautiful, well worth a trip over to check it out.

we aren't using the dining plan this trip since it has changed. Where can I find a number to make a ressie (or is it the reg. line for that?) and how do I read up on the restaurants in the hotel?

What about Poly? Is that one good too?

Welcome to DIS and posting!

CS = Counter Service, non waitress service meals

TS = Table service, you will have a waiter/waitress

ADR - Advanced Dining Reservation, you really should make them for any TS meal you plan to have at Disney. Call 1-407-WDW-DINE for reservations and information. Expect to be turned away most of the time if you show up without an ADR in hopes of being seated for a meal.

Mara is the CS restaurant at the Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL). I have not been there, but based on the menu it helped me select AKL as our hotel vs Wilderness Lodge. There were other factors, but the size of Roaring Forks at WL as well as a more varied menu at Mara gave the CS nod to AKL vs WL for us. Also we will definitely eat at Boma and definitely skip Whispering Canyon, so AKL got the nod for TS as well. We've had dinner at Boma and its a much do again kind of a place! This is no to say those places are bad at WL, just better choices for us at AKL.

Another vote for Boma. Something for everyone. The first time I went there was back when making an ADR was the only way to see the resort but I have back at least once every trip. Try everything, esp the soups.

Amen to the Boma soups, I'm good for about 3 bowls per trip! Thanks for the tips about Mara what do they have that you liked? We wil be having lunch there on arrival day.

I don't know that I like anything there as I have never eaten there, but the menu items that caught my eye are:

Pizzas (Flat bread and other)
Shrimp platter for adults
Soups (assume they are some of the Boma soups)

We like breakfast foods so we'd probably get the platter at any CS.

Roaring Forks seemed to offer a more thematic "wilderness" lunch/dinner menu that isn't to my liking. The size and comments about the crowds were pretty consistent.

Neither will be as diverse as what we had at CBR, though we never had dinner there (Pizza, breakfast platter and veggie burger meals).

Labor Day weekend will tell.
