My most recent trip staying onsite at WDW was to POR last Sept. I lived in FL and had been to WDW over 25+ times, but had never stayed onsite before. It took me moving to IN before I made a trip to an onsite resort.

(A year later I am now back in FL, but have caught the onsite bug and don't think I want to stay offsite any longer!!)
I had originally started out by wanting to stay at the CBR as I thought it had the "look" and "feel" I was going after, but unfortunately the CBR was closed at that time for a refurb. We decided to stay at POR instead. It was my second choose. I loved the Plantation look of the Mansions. I wasn't fussy with my requests. Only that the room be non-smoking and be in the Mansion section as opposed to AB (didn't and still don't really care for that rustic look). We were happily pleased when we arrived and were given a room in Magnolia Bend on the second floor. It was a corner room (so that means we had two windows, which I think made the room look a little larger) and was on the inside of the sort of "H" shape, so it wasn't facing the parking lot or anything. It faced a lovely little garden area with a fountain, and further down you could see the canal. The room was not "too" small and wasn't dirty at all. One morning we slept in a little and the maid came to the door early, so the next day we left our "do not disturb" sign out. When we left for the park we forgot to take it down, so when we returned we found this large bag full of toiletry supplies (towels, shampoo, toilet paper) hanging on our door.
All in all we were very happy with our stay at POR and I personally thought the grounds and buildings were extremely beautiful. We always saw groundskeepers out working to keep the area in perfect order. In fact we liked the hotel so much that we twice called down/went to the front desk to extend our stay by a few days. They were most helpful, and even though we were warned that we might have to move rooms (which we were willing to do), they called us back moments later to tell us that we could stay in our original room without moving.
The only thing that I found slightly disturbing about the Mansion section was the location of the rooms/parking lot. On the first evening when we arrived it was already dark outside and we had trouble determining where to park in order to get to our room, because we didn't know exactly where it was located. We ended up parking the car and getting out to walk around the building till we found our room (I don't think the wall signs directing you to room numbers are very explanatory). We also did not enjoy eating in the Boatwright's restaurant, but that would not deter us from returning once again to POR. Although now that I have found the joy of staying onsite, I am eager to discover what some of the other resorts have to offer.
