Hey guys. Quick question. We are going on a two week vacation next year when our schools let out. I would like to make reservations for the Friday before Memorial Day, however, if our school system has any snow days, it will push the make up days into Memorial Day week. Since I teach, I have to be there. My question is, if we do have the snow days, would I have to cancel the whole reservation through Dvc or could I ask them to cancel the first few days? Thanks, F3

You need to call MS, but you can drop days at either end without having to cancel any of the other days. Just watch your banking deadline and if you need to drop a day or so, do it before the 31 day mark, or the points for dropped day will go to holding. I just did this, dropped 2 days, the 1st and 7th day of a 1 week new years trip.

Not a DVC member, but are you flying down? If so, be careful about nonrefundable airfares.

Would it make more sense to push the trip back into summer vacation?

That's what I would do. We try not to schedule anything for the first week of summer break for exactly this reason.

Make your best guess and reserve what you think you need you can always change it later. You may want to reserve longer to give you more options if you have enough points to do so without borrowing.

And at my University we had something unique -- water main break days! two of them. All of Worcester had to boil water in November and lots of students practiced couch surfing as the Residence Halls were closed.:scratchin

Hey dgaston, you teach at my DD's university! That really was some water break...crazy!

Oh my, I definitely have been where you are. For four straight years I would always book trips immediately at the start of summer break according to our school calendar. Like you, I am also a teacher. BUT, each of the four times was a disaster either due to snow days or some "crisis" (thought up by my principal) that she thought it was necessary to call me repeatedly on my vacation in essence completely spoiling it. For those reasons I have since scheduled either at the end of June or July if I'm going in the summer. YMMV
