Dikembe Mutombo passed away today...

NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo died today at the age of 58, from brain cancer. We started watching him play basketball during the late 1980s when he was at Georgetown. He played professional basketball for 18 years, playing for the Denver Nuggets, the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, the New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets. Off the court, Dikembe was known for his humanitarian work. In 1997, he established the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation with a mission to improve education and quality of life in his native DRC. Too young... cancer doesn't care.

I will never forget the day Dikembe Mutombo came to work...well, specifically my floor/area of the office. It was probably a year or so after his retirement and finishing his career with the Houston Rockets. I was one of several people startled by the unannounced towering presence making his way past our desk/cube areas. He was actually being guided by one of my friends who had left my old department to go work in event planning. She was bringing Mutombo to meet our division president. It was kind of surreal because he was waving and saying hi to everyone without having to do more than just stand there. I guess that's a benefit of being 7'2". He seemed like a really nice guy and was all smiles.

Working for an NBA player in the early mid 90's, you would hear a lot about other players. Never heard a bad word about Dikembe. That says a lot.

Cancer sucks. Sad to hear of his passing.
