digital cameras thru airport security

I'm a fairly new digital camera user. are memory cards (both unused and those with pictures already on them) safe to go thru airport security, like xray screening, etc? it would assume it's like taking a laptop thru. I plan on taking it in my carryon. also are extreme temperatures an issues with these cameras/cards? Thanks for any info!

Memory cards are safe to go through the xray machines. If your camera is like mine there is a warning to avoid extreme tempertures hot or cold. Take it in your carry-on and you won't have any problems.

EXACTLY.

Forget all the warnings you learned over the years about cameras and the x-ray machines. The problem was that FILM is sensitive to the x-rays.

NO FILM = NO PROBLEM

Digital memory is totally unaffected by any security measures used anywhere in airports. There is no more risk of losing data from digital camera memory cards than there is of losing music from a CD or from your MP3 player.

They do warn people about laptops and the wand as the magnet can ruin things. I assume the same applies to a memory card??

One thing that will affect your camera is humidity. If coming from an ac room to the humid outside you will probably have some lens fogging. Give it some time and it should adjust. I also put a few of those silicone pacts (you can find them in some pill bottles, shoe boxes, some electronic boxes) to help absorb some moisture. I dont know how well they work, but its worth a try!

with laptops, they use a conventional hard drive, which can be affected by a strong magnetic source. some large capacity (typically 6gb+) mp3 players also use a hard disk rather than flash memory, and they would be affected to.

Best thing to do is tell security when you get to the desk about the items and they'll advise (translation: tell you) where to put them.
