Digital Camera????

I too have been checking into digital cameras. I have a Canon Rebel G SLR which I love but is being boxed up to be sent out for repair.

I see that everyone is looking into the Kodak Easyshare DX6490 & DX 7440, which we did like (nice big viewing, docking, etc.) but I seem to be leaning more towards the Minolta Dimage Z1, or Z2.

Does anyone have experience with the Minolta Dimage, do you like it, is it easy to use. Would you reccomend it?

Any imput is appreciated.

I had the Dimage Z3, the newest camera in that line, and I returned it. I loved the size and style, but the picture quality was not very good at all. I ended up getting the Panasonic FZ20, which is a bit larger in size. I would suggest going to www.dpreview.com and reading over there. Tons of helpful information.

and if you're looking in the dimage z2 price range you can probably pick up a G5 for around that amount online as they are the older model. I have a powershot pro1 and love it.

I've had a panasonic 4mp and was very unhappy with the picture quality, response time, etc. I seriously considered several sony models and the minoltas. The sonys we decided against because of consistent complaints on writing to the disk (we were looking at the straight to cd mavicas) and the minoltas we decided against because they could not compare to the canons for picture quality.

I would say if you are accustomed to an SLR canon you're not going to be happy with anything below 4mp at the very least.

I agree, go to dpreview and read until your eyes fall out!

Try a G5 before you buy it. I found the buttons impossibly awkward for me. Probably it would be easier for someone with larger, stronger hands.

Well my eyes haven't fallen out yet, but they have gone cross-eyed from reading soooooo many reviews.

It seems that each camera has it's pro and cons. I love my rebel G and since we take ALOT of kids sports pictures I need the zoom (otherwise my kids look like ants in the outfield or on the soccer field). If it can be repaired, then I can ease up on the zoom need (which seems to open up a whole new group of choices) and look for something smaller.

Lag time is a big concern. I used a friends camera the other day at a b-day party, took a picture of her son jumping off the diving board, clicked, moved camera down, then it clicked - did I get the picture? (I think I got my feet).

Wow, I never imagined going digital would be so much work

Lag time can sometimes be improved.

With my camera, for example, I can turn off the quickview which displays the just-taken photo on the LCD. The camera is ready to take a new shot faster, and I can always push the review button if I need to see the shot I just took.

And there are faster memory cards.

Prefocusing and holding the focus just before the shot is good, too, if the shot allows.

The digital rebel will give you the control and feel you are used to with your SLR and will give you better pictures than any of the point and shoots.

I would love the digital rebel but..........yikes cannot put out that much money. A friend does have one and loves it but also spends a great deal of time photographing wildlife, human life, etc. If I had the time to concentrate on photography (which I would love) that would definately be the way I would want to go. I on the other hand just love taking pictures and while I'd like to think I'm pretty darn good, well the truth is I'm not . (Wait, once I took a picture that everyone thought was pretty outstanding, but it was really just luck and just once)

Anyhow, my quest continues. Your replies are so appreciated and helpful.

I wonder how many bad shots the pros take that we never see? Keep snapping away and you learn more every day!

That is the best part of digital photography! You can just shoot and shoot and shoot, without having to worry about getting a bunch of bad photo's printed. You can experiment and practice a lot more with no worries.

OMGosh, you are so right they probably take a ton of pics we don't see and as far as the savings that I will have with a digital. I usually end up with 1/2 the roll of not so good pictures that I paid for and just end up in a box, not the album.

Hmmmmm, now I'm thinking.

I just got my first digital camera for my birthday (Sony Cybershot DSC-P73) and I love it!!! I am really looking foward to playing around with it so that I will be an expert by the time we go to Disney. Last year we used disposable cameras and everything came out so dark and the colors were terrible!
