Our 3 yr old Olympus D450 (1.3 megapixel) is acting up. It doesn't focus anymore when you zoom. :( It's been a good camera, but there are a few features I'm not crazy about anymore --- with all the newer models.

Today, we've researched (and hand-held) and RULED OUT a Canon S30, Olympus C4000, Olympus 720 & 730.

And we've moved on up to Canon G2 or G3. (We tend to overbuy bells & whistles. LOL)

We like the movie mode with sound; flip screen; feel & weight (although it's larger than old camera - I think I can live with it).

It's fully automatic, but has tons of manual settings too. I've toyed with the idea of getting a Canon Rebel (non-digital) for a while so I could play with manual settings -- but figured why waste the film. I figure I can get that out of my system in the digital, & if they don't come out -- DELETE. :)

We mostly take pics of travel & the cat & stuff. We'll probably keep the old digital to beat up on the boat (salt water exposure) & while hiking (geocaching.com)

Anyone with experience here? Can I see your pics?
Thanks!

P.S. What's a good place to shop on-line? Price & reputation & return policy.

They are great cameras

Ahhh, ZURG. I was hoping to get YOUR approval!!! LOL

thanks. :D

My sister has the G2 I have the S40 and we both agree the s40 is a better deal.same amout of pixals 4.s40 much lighter.the guts of the camera are basically the same except the G2 has a hot foot for added flash ...which most people would never need and the G2 can change lenses.....which most people really don't need.save the $200 and get the S40 or the S45 which is just coming out from Canon.I LOVE my S40 ...I like the lens being covered rather than dealing with the silly lense cap all the time.plus mine is much lighter for those disney trips and can fit in my pocket better......you won't be sorry

I have the G2 and I love it..... but I am kinda freaked about it at times since it was such an expensive camera......

If ya plan on doing movies.... get a large memory card (I have 256) :teeth:

Other than that I love it...... I did have to carry around the instruction book for a while....... all the bells and whistles need some splaining...... LOL

I also know that Brisully (here on the DIS) has one.... :)

Thanks, I'll go look at those too.

There are just so many choices.

I have a Nikon Coolpix995 which I absolutely love, which means nothing....but my DBF who is a photojournalist for several local weeklies also loves it, and he would know better than I would! I also know Nikon has come out with later models, although I haven't checked them out yet.

I'd post some pictures for you but I'm technically challenged when it comes to this board. If you would like to see some, let me know and I'll e-mail you a few.

If you click on any of the links in my sig you'll see pics taken with a G2. It's an awesome camera and I highly recommend it.

Mitch, I finally got to look at your picture threads between the boards going up & down all night.

I'm loving this camera even more.

It's SO hard to decide!

DD and I each received a little Canon Powershot S330 (new this year) for xmas. This is our first digitals and it's a point and shoot camera. Not fancy, but the pictures are awesome and I'm finding it's easy to use too.

3x Optical zoom.

Good luck, I think you'll be happy with the Cannon you are looking at. Check out buydig.com for good prices and service.

Just curious as to why you ruled out the Olympus 730. I've had the Olympus 700 (predecessor to the 720 & 730) since August, and I love it. I don't know much about the other cameras you're considering, but if you're interested, my C-700 pictures are at:

All the galleries except WDW_june_2002 and Sunsets_fuji_4700 were taken with the Olympus C-700.
