Digital Camera Recommendations?

Whatever you choose, you won't be dissapointed, you'll get fantastic quality snaps. A digital camera was one of the best purchases I ever made.

It's on sale at buy.com with dock for $272 - no shipping or taxes . It's between that or the 6490 with the 10X zoom. We will be in Alaska in June and might see some critters that we want to photograph. 6490 is bigger and bulkier, though. Decisions, decisions. . .

I purchased my first digital back in July of '00, have not taken a film picture since, though have taken over 20K digitals, many practice 'throw aways', as they are free. You'll love it.

We looked at both the 6440 and 6490 and chose the 6440 mostly fo the size of the camera. Although the 10x zoom is nice, the size of the camera was just too big and bulky. The smaller camera will be easier to lug around the parks all day. We got ours at CompUSA for $299 dock included.

Just bought a Sony P72 because our film camera has given up the ghost on Tuesday. Seems simple enough to use, it will use AA batteries. I like having all my memory the same (we already own a sony mini-dv and my PDA is a sony.

It has optical and digital zoom. The most important thing is a optical zoom to get great prints.

Hopefully I can practice with it a lot this weekend.

The Nikon Coolpix is awesome. It's really small and easy to travel with, and takes fantastic pictures. I love it.

...for your recommendations. I bought the Kodak Easyshare 6440 online a couple of days ago - now I have to wait for it to arrive ! I checked out several cameras at Best Buy - this seemed the easiest for me to handle and understand rolleyes.

Haven't read up on the A75. As I recal the A70 has a better movie mode than the A80.

Canon has an new Utra Zoom camera coming out a lot more money and a lot more lens (stabilized too - very cool)

Canon Canon Canon...We bought a A-40 a few years ago and love it...Now you can get a newer model lie the A-80.

We got 2 sets of rechargeable AA batteries for it and a quick charger and have not looked back since. It was very rare that we had to change them till nightime on our trip and we take cose to 300 pics a day.


We love it because we don't get our fingers in front of the lens and it feels go holding it. It's even big enough for my DH's big hands and ther controls are easy to understand.

The best part...Canon has the sharpest lenses out there...


Make sure that the one you pick if COMFORTABLE for you to hold or you won't use it as much as one that is comfortable.

this is more along the lines of a prosumer camera, takes 5mg picture, is compatible with larger 2-4 gb microdrives coming on the market
it's large enough to hold steadier than the smaller pocket models, something i feel is very important, particularly at wdw, it uses a larger proprietary battery, but these are rechargable and last longer,paricularly if you use lcd a lot, that's the feature that really chews up battery life
5mg pixel gives enough detail so if you get that stunning special wdw/character/children once in a lifetime shot you can make a great 8x10 and an acceptable 11x14 to hang on the wall
digital is the best thing to happen to photography, allows lots of eperimentation and immediate feedback, allowing in many cases to recompose and get it right, right there at time of shooting

Gary brings up a point near and dear to my heart - proprietray batteries.

I would much rather use rechargable AA batteries in a camera on vacation so that if there is a need you can by some and keep shooting.

The Canon A70 - 75-80 etc use AA batteries.

Thya also shoot avi format video that is fairly eady to get into a video editor.

Small enought to carry but with a grip you cna hold still.

ok, i recommend going with the largest pixel count that uses AA batteries, i'm going with G5 because i already have 4 of the bp-11 batteries it uses and the charger from buying d60 so i'm already invested in canon batteries, and canon appears to be standardizing batteries among the slr line, all use same battery

that said i would certainly get largest body of these models, you just can't overestimate the need to have a firm grip for sharp shots, even bracing against lamps on main street i have yet to get an acceptable night shot of the castle, using S40, i'm getting close but it's a matter of finding the right amount of pressure on shutter release without moving the body, something all small camera bodies are susceptible to, and G5 fits easily into the large fanny pack i always tour wdw with,it holds 2, 24oz water bottles in side pockets, so that's why it's constant world companion, 2 ponchos plus camera in zip lock fits into pocket

also buy extra memory, even shooting jpeg, you can fill up a 512 real fast, good news is these are going down in price as larger cards replace these
