Digital Camera Picture Developing/Printing

Thanks to help on this board I just purchased a new digital Olympus camera 3.2 pixel.... a couple of questions (actually alot of ?'s)

I printed a picture from my older Epson printer and am not impressed with the clarity - I don't know if it's because of the printer. I used the highest quality on the camera and printer but I can still tell this is a digital print.

Can anyone recommend a good printer for photos?

Also, has anyone used online services to print their pics and if so, how do they come out?

One of the things I'm a little concerned about is that maybe I should have gone with higher pixels...... I do see a difference but maybe it's just me

Certainly anything less than a 5x7, and maybe even up to an 8x10, should print fine at the top setting with a 3.2. You do need photo paper, not inexpensive though. Any of the newer printers, HP, Lexmark, Epson, that are geared toward printing pictures should be fine. I have an HP Photosmart 1000 that is a few years old and no longer made (I think current model is 7350), and even with the medium camera setting on mine, I get great 4x6 prints (never tried bigger and actually rarely print).

Any photo service, online or not, will give you picture prints the equivlant of film prints. I have used www.wolfcamera.com with excellent results, I know snapfish, Kodak, imagestation, ofoto and many are fine.

Most Sam's and Walmarts do prints in an hour for .20 - .37 per print depending on your local area. Soon all will be equiped.

You want to find one with the Fuji Frontier machine.

If you have one close that is the only way to go.

So do I just bring in the memory card - the thing is only the size of a postage stamp... what if they lose it?

WDWorld2003 - Sam's Clubs and several other stores now have a kiosk where you put your media card in the computer, select your shots to print and then print them...All while you wait! You can choose the print size, correct red eye, etc. I would not leave a media card without first copying those shots onto my computer or some other back-up. For online services, try ofoto.com or snapfish.com. Both do wonderful prints, offer online storage, etc. and print prices run about .49 for a 4x6 - a little more expensive than you local Sam's or Wal-Mart but a timesaver when you're busy. www.shutterfly.com is a great site to register. They give like 15 free prints when you first register. Get on their email list and they are always having some sort of special for ordering etc. I love that site and also use ofoto.com that others have mentioned. I like shutterfly as you can edit, add borders, crop, fix your photos on there. Lots of fun to play with!

I had an Epson printer and did not like the photos it printed. They always looked grainy. We just got an HP 3420 and the pictures are as close to film quality as I've seen. The Epson software was a pain anyway. It was always causing glitches and sending weird error messages. Got rid of it and no more glitches!

Is there a place on these Web-sites that develop your pictures a place for you to store them? If not, where so you store them once you download them onto your computer so you can access them in the future? This maybe a really sillly questions but I'm .

Don't bother printing pics on your printer, unless you just have to have it immediately. The print won't stand the test of time and it's more expensive than sending it off. I use Ofoto.com and Shutterfly.com.

We have ordered ours through uploading them to Walmart and then picking them up at our local store. I think 4x6 were .26 each.

From now on, I think we will take in the memory card to Wlamart and use the hour service. It is quicker and only 3 cents more for a 4x6. We thought about printing them at home, but with the price of the printer, paper, and ink it is easier to have someone else do it.

costco.com does excellent prints. .24 a copy for 4x6 and you can pick them up at Costcos or they will mail them for you.

I got 130 photos for $30 or so.

We use Shutterfly and love it. They are REALLY fast and the pictures come out great! Our camera only has 2.0 pixals, but it's perfect for 4x6 prints, which is all I ever print when I do decide to print.

We store our pictures on our computer w/ some software that came w/ our camera. I also burn our pictures on a CD to have a back up. When I want to share pictures on the DIS, I link from Imagestation.
