We are looking at the Sony DSC S60 or the Nikon Coolpix 4600 digital camera (for our WDW trip) I was wondering will the memory cards be more expensive for the sony or does it matter what "brand" memory card you use? Does anyone have either of these camera's and if so would like to hear how you like them also.

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-P92 and I have several different memory cards (IO Data and Lexar) for it and all of them work fine. The cheaper ones work just as good as the name brand.

I don't know how much the Nikon cards run, but I'm sure there are generic brands for those too.

The memory cards should run about the same price for all brands of camera I would also suggest when looking for a memory card, check ebay, the sellers offer all brands at incredible prices, I picked up a new in package Sundisk 1GB flashcard that held up to 1000 pictures for my canon for only $65.00 including shipping. It worked out great, I took 420 pictures on my last trip!

I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 that I bought back in 2000. I love this camera. Takes awesome pics and had great reviews. I was looking at Nikon and Sony too and decided on Nikon because I didn't want to have to buy memory sticks. My camcorder takes CompactFlash so I chose a camera that uses the same. We have a 1GB IBM Microdrive that we bought when we got the camera. it holds over 500 pictures and was more than enough for our WDW vacation. one word of caution...the humidity caused our camera to lock up the last day there. The lens came out, took a photo and then the camera stuck. It wouldn't do another thing. I vaguely remember the sales person telling us humidity could impact the camera's performance.

We have the Sony Cybershot DSC-P100 and it is great. I had a less costly version before this but left it in a rental car, never to recover! :(
Both are great. I have not had the chance to use this one at WDW but you can adjust the setting for nitetime shots and fireworks! I use various memory cards with this one, all work the same.

I know that each park has a place to buy camera related items, but I was wondering if they actually sell extra memory cards? First trip with a digital camera and just want to be prepared! :earsgirl:

I would pick some extra ones up at home. Keep the receipt and return them if you don't use them. It will be much cheaper than buying them at WDW.

You definately won't want to try and buy those at WDW, but yes, you could buy them there if you wanted.

I would recommend you either just go ahead and pickup a card, or 2, before you go. If you like to take a ton of pics, you could get a 1GB card and be pretty well set. You could get one off ebay or grab one at a local department or electronics store. (watch the ad papers and you might even catch them on sale) :goodvibes

Another suggestion would be to adjust your camera to a smaller pixel size. If you got a 5 Megapixel camera, you don't need to take 5mega pixel images! Adjust it down to around 3 megapixels and you will be fine and get about double the number of pics on the disk. 3MP is PLENTY big to print out photo quality 8x10's. And if you never print that size, it still allows you to edit and crop out the images and print 5x7's or 4x6's.

Personally, I have 2 128MB cards that I use, and I hardly ever fill up a 128 card in 1 day. Then I just copy them over to the laptop and start fresh the next day. For me, that makes it easier to sort out the pics.

HTH!

Too funny!! I am looking at the SAME cameras!! I have three flyers sitting on my counter comparing prices! Actually, I just went and got them to double check, and its the Nikon 4600 and the Canon a520. I feel compelled to lean towards a 5megapixel, but do I really need to spend the extra $$? I probably will only be printing out 4x6, maybe some 5x7 pictures. Does it make a difference? Are they that much clearer?

It's not only the megapixels that determine the quality. The optics in the camera itself are very important.

Just my opinion but I would really lean towards getting a 5mp at this point as they are really phasing out all the 3's and under now. I got a 7mp sony off ebay for $292 and the 5's are really getting low in price. It just stinks buying something and then being obsolete in less than a year.

The megapixels aren't what you need to worry about in regards to quality. The MP is related to the size of the images. I wouldn't recommend getting anything less than 3MP, simply because if you want to crop or zoom-in on certain areas of the image to print, that gives you the flexibility to do that and still get 4x6 prints out of it. 5MP can be overkill for most, but anything over that would definately be too much for the normal user (unless you intend to take the images to blow up on posters).

There are quite a few other features that would probably be more beneficial to consider. Zoom, rechargeable batteries, storage options, etc. I would recommend you take a look at the "digital camera buying guide" at cnet. Here's a link: Digital Camera Buying Guide

Ebay is a great place to get deals on digital cameras, that's where I got mine! :teeth:

As for the obsolete, the cameras don't go obsolete because of the MP it has. I'm honestly not sure why the camera manufacturers really push these higher MP cameras out to normal consumers. If you take your pics in the 7mp setting, you will never print out anything that size. However, it would allow you to take a picture of a flower garden, then crop and expand an individual flower in the garden and then print that out. The manufacturers put out these higher MP cameras to encourage new sales and to increase the demand for newer and bigger memory cards.

I'm sure you get great pics though. :teeth: Have you explored the option of setting the MP rating down on your camera? If you do, you'll notice that you can get quite a few more pics on your memory stick. I took mine from 5mp to 3mp and get double the images!
