I really want to get a digital camera.

What kind does everyone here use?
and what are your likes and dislikes about it?

Thanks

Mal

It's nice to see you back, Maleficent!! :)

I have a Canon PowerShot A20. Sometimes I'm happy with the pics, sometimes not, but really, that has more to do with me than the camera. I've never really taken the time to sit down and thoroughly figure it out, I just focus and shoot.

I do like that I can immediately view the pics that I've taken and delete them if I'm not happy with them.

I think DixieDreamer has a PowerShot also. Hopefully she can give you more feedback on it's performance.

Anyone else?

:)

I have a Sony Cybershot 3.34 Mega-pixel. It takes great pictures....especially of my flowers. I take high resolution shots and crop out the edges to make them small enough to post here.

I have an HP 215 - a couple of years old now. I HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT! Goes thru batteries like water and takes only so-so pics. I use my pc software to fix the photos.

here's anopther question inspired by "sorcerormickey"!

If you had it all to do over again would you buy the same camera?

or wait and buy the same camera just more mega pixels or would you buy a totally different one?

this thread is really helping this is a big investment(kindof like a video camera or a computer)for me and it is not something once bought I can go out and change right away if I am not happy.

Thanks again everyone

Mal

I probably would buy the same camera. I have a spare battery for it and they last pretty well. The memory sticks have really dropped in price. I used Consumer Reports to choose it and I haven't been disappointed. It's 2 years old and the newer version might be nice. I can try to fig up that report, if you like.

Be on the lookout in your email for 2 articles and a link to camera ratings, Mal.

thank you!

Can anyone explain to me about pixels are 5 really better than 2's as far as picture quaility?

What basic things should I be looking for?

I am thinking of at least a 4 mega pixel camera but will I need one that strong?

I received my digital camera as a gift three years ago. It is a Olympus Camedia D-360L 1.3 megapixel. I love it. I don't know much about these new cameras so I can't help you with the one your link goes to.

If I had my druthers, it would have been nice to have a camera with zoom feature. I do have some sort of digital zoom but always forget how it works. I would have liked an easier zoom feature.

I also would have liked it if the software that came with it allowed me to do more with the photos. Once I upload the photos from camera to computer, I then have to transfer any photos I want to crop to another photo program I have. I make the adjustments in that program before I upload to a website. So, I have two sets of some pictures, varied slightly, on my computer and I'm sure that is taking up too much valuable space on this old computer of mine.

Good luck in your search.

You know, I just thought of a dislike I have for all digital cameras, in general.

I can't just "bring" photos to work or some place to show people. I need to have them see it on my computer, or email it to people but (believe it or not) I know many people who do not have computers - Mom and MIL being two - who I would like to share some photos with. Printing is always an option but I find myself rarely printing them out any more. Plus, I worry that if something happens to my computer then I lose them... forever!

You asked for likes and dislikes, so I just thought I would share this too.

that is exactly what I need loads of food for thought it will not make my choice any easier but I will be wiser thanks to everyones insights!

thanks again

Mal;)

Hi everyone!

Pixels are those tiny little squares you see in digital pictures. The more pixels you have, the sharper the image will be and the larger it can be enlarged without seeing those squares. If you are printing shots and do not plan on enlarging photos beyond 8 x 10 (or maybe 11 x 14), a 3 or 4 megapixel camera is more that sufficient. If you are only going to use the pictures digitally (ie, on the computer) then 1.3 -2 megapixels is fine.

I have the Canon Powershot G2. It is a 4.0 megapixel camera with about a zillion features, but one in particular that I wanted to mention. You have the option of adding close-up lenses to the lens on the camera which is a great feature for taking pictures of flowers (especially with bees or butterflies) as it allows you to focus really close! Now that the Canon G3 has come out, the G2 is a fairly affordable camera!

Good luck! :D
