I have an Olympus C-2100 Ultrazoom. I, too, got frustrated at the resetting. I thought it was silly and that there had to be a setting, and I found it.
- in picture mode go to the menu
- select "mode setup"
- turn "allreset" off
after you do this you will have to manually reset the camera if you want to undo all the settings.
If you liked your Olympus, I'd stick with that brand if I were you. It is my personal favorite. Their optics and zoom are excellent. It is hard to beat their optical zoom on the ultra-zoom line. Try going to www.pricescan.com I found the C-740UZ (3.3MP) for $319, and the C-750UZ ()4.1MP) for $404.
