Has anyone had to go to a high risk doctor for pregnancy AFTER already having previous children delivered by a regular OB? What is it they do differently? I assume it costs more? I would appreciate any information. (In my case, I would need to see one because of cardiac issues.)

I saw a regular OB for my first pregnancy and a high risk OB for my second pregnancy along with my regular OB. Basically, the high risk doc monitored me very closely the last trimester. I saw him twice weekly and my regular OB once a week. The did 1 - 2 ultrasounds each week and monitored my blood pressure, etc. My regular OB was the one who did the actual delivery with a neonatology team in the delivery room also.

I'm sure they are going to do things differently for each patient depending on why they are there. The many, many visits I had along with all the other tests and ultrasounds did end up costing quite a bit more, but luckily we had good insurance.

My hospital has a Perinatology Suite for high risk pregnancies, doing what Wendy has already posted.

The type of care given by the Perinatologist depends on the patient; Gestational Diabetic, history of genetic problems, advanced maternal age, etc.

Most insurances will pay for visits to the Perinatologist.
