Hi, I'm a new DVC owner so I'm still learning all the ins/outs and lingo. I'm planning our first trip "home" and need a few extra points. The problem is I don't know the difference between renting and transferring points. :confused3 I have spent a few days on this site looking for an explanation but have been unsuccessful. I really appreciate the expertise found on this site. :)

Thank you.

When you rent, the other owner keeps the points in his/her account and makes the reservations for you. When you transfer, the points are moved from another owner's account into your's and you make your own reservation.

As an owner already, doing a transfer would seem preferable for you so that you hold the reservation.

Solid response, as always HBC. :thumbsup2

I'll just add the reminder that we are all allowed only one transfer per year (either in or out of our point account) so make sure that you use it wisely.

Since you will be making most of the reservation with your own contract, it would make no sense to try to "rent points" from someone and have them reserve (for example) your last night for you. It would be a separate reservation, no guarantee of not having to move and no guarantee that you'd find someone willing to go through the hassle for just a few points.

Yes, transfer will definitely be better for you.

Or...borrow from the following year and start figuring out how you can add on more points! :)

Is that once per calendar year or once per use year?

Thank you so much for the quick and clear responses. Based on this information I will probably just pay cash for the extra night and bank the leftover points for next year as I don't think my DH is willing to buy more points right now. (maybe after this trip, he will see the value in more points:rotfl2: )

You could always borrow a few points from next year to get that extra night. You can borrow as many times as you like, just not more than one year ahead.
