What is the difference between a Cat. 5 and a Cat. 6? Is it just the location on the ship? From what I can tell all the Cat. 5's are on Deck 7.... and most Cat. 6 are on Deck 6. Does having a metal verandah have anything to do with this?

just curious....

The only difference is location. Category 5's are on Deck 7. Category 6's are on Decks 5 and 6. I prefer Category 6 because it's a better value. I can't imagine that being one deck higher is worth the extra cost.

Both Category 5's and 6's have transparent verandahs and steel verandah railings depending on their location.

I have a chart that show the location of which kind of room you'll get...

Cat 5 and Cat 6 rooms are identical. For some reason, DCL places a higher value on Cat. 5. I stayed in Cat 5 and loved Deck 7, but the only difference I can see is that with Cat. 6 you are lower and many of them are just above the lifeboats. However, since the lifeboats are recessed, I can't see that it would make much difference.

For some reason, people generally seem to prefer being higher on the ship...hence, the premium price for deck 7, when the cabins on 6 and 5 are the same. Personally, I like being as close to the water as possible, so I am happiest on deck 5 (I also like the metal verandahs and being in the butt end of the ship, which is why 5650 is my favorite stateroom). The metal verandahs are not related to category, but rather to being aft.

Regarding the metal verandahs... if you are seated, can you still see over the railing? Or do you have to stand to look out. I have checked out the pics on the castaway club site.. but I still can't tell.

They're at a height that could be a problem seeing over them while seated, for many people. I'm a little more than 5 ft 8 and I can see over them with a small amount of difficulty. My DW is 5 ft 5 and she can't see over them while seated.

We prefer the Plexiglas verandas, although they aren't really clear like a window would be.

hope that helps
