Diez (10) Noches Calientes en la Riviera Mexicana/17 de abril 2011 (4.17.11 Wonder!)

My kids would like to get into pin trading. Where would you suggest getting a lot? Ebay? Cayla, I see that you like to stay away from the Ebay lots, do you have any suggestion how to get started cheaply?

We get all our pins on eBay, and have had good luck so far. I have some favorite lot sellers that I could recommend to you if you want to PM me.

As a general matter, I really love pin trading as an activity for kids. Our DDs now consider it one of the highlights of a Disney vacation, not just because they can get small, affordable mementos of their favorite characters, but also because it's like a big treasure hunt. I like it because it gives them a safe, structured means to practice interacting with new people, and because it's an instant conversation starter with other kids.

Clever Disney, to come up with something that everyone enjoys and that nets them a pretty penny to boot!

I am afraid my DDs don't really have anything that special to trade. I usually just buy a bulk set from ebay and they trade with CMs so I am not sure if we fit in here. Taylor (9,female) collects tinkerbell...and her latest obsession is the newest CM pin set at WDW of the yeti. Jaide (12) collects stitch and her latest set she is tryig for is the license plate one (she has half). I can always sneak pack some of their pins (like Lisa mentioned...since our kiddos don't know about the cruise) so lmk what types I should be bringing.
Thanks:goodvibes

I forgot to mention that my DD Jessica (8) also collects Stitch pins, and we have some duplicates and others she's willing to trade, so if you think Jaide would be interested, we'll bring those along. :stitch:

Another good thing about trading...my girls are able to bring back reasonably priced presents for friends. It got crazy how much $$ they would be spending on gifts for school friends and teachers...now they ask who their favorite characters are and they try and trade a pin for each friend! works out great for everyone...and if their friends aren't into pin trading, they still ave a fun gift.

Re. FE gifts..... Is EVERYONE making CREATIVE hand-made gifts? I'm not, and I hope that's okay. My gifts are Disney oriented and took a lot of thought, but they are not hand-made. Oh well, if I'm alone, then maybe people will be ready for a uniquely UN-unique little gift!!!
Handmade and creative FE gifts: Sorry, not from me. HOWEVER, I am also planning on Disney oriented,well-thought out gifts for the Mamas and Papas. Maybe you'd better pm me so we don't duplicate.

And too bad you're not dragging along your DD19, She and my lazy DS 19 could keep each other company (notice I didn't say they could keep each other out of trouble:rolleyes:)

We have a dear friend who also loves Stitch, although I'm not sure what she has. I'll need to get an inventory list from her. We'll have our bag of random pins (also from ebay) DD is always on the look-out for princess pins.

My boys and I just do the standard lanyard trading. They just like looking at the different pins and trading if something catches their attention.

Helen, please put us down for 5 of the lanyards - they look great.

Names as follows:
Penny
James
Lokie
Lily
Charlotte (if this is too long, just write Char)

thanks,

Penny

Sure thing. I'll add you to the list.

We currently have 37 people signed up for the tasting. Looks like a great group and I'm sure we'll have a blast. :woohoo:

HOLY COW!!! You guys have been super busy planning!!! I have been gone for several weeks and just now got caught up on over 25 pages on this board! I feel like i'm starting over!! :rotfl: The tasting sounds like a BLAST! DH and I would be up for that IF there is still room (Jason and Mary)?!?!? If so, please put us down for two. I agree that the 18th is PERFECT! The sooner we get to know you AMAZING group of DISers the better! I found myself cracking up while 'catching up'. You really are a FUN group of people! Can't wait! We FINALLY got our cruise docs today! YAY! I guess being in Alaska it may have taken a bit longer?!?!:confused3 In any case, we are more than ready to get this party started! The last few weeks at work have been NUTS! I wish we were taking off tomorrow! I will send payment for the wristbands ordered ASAP tonight and THANK YOU!!! Geez, what else have i missed?! It's hard to retain it all, but i THINK i'm caught up! Can't wait to meet all you amazing people in person. Super big thanks to those of you coordinating all of this...Kristi, Connie, Helen, etc......Virdis...i just LOVE your posts! :o) I have a feeling that you and my DH will get along AMAZINGLY! Anyway, feel free to fill me in on anything else i may have missed! I do not intend on missing ONE more day on this board until CRUISE DAY! :yay:

Most of my items are stored bought too. I'm definitely not crafty.

I agree with Cayla that there's no predicting what other people (especially kids!) will want to trade for. As far as I can tell, EVERY PIN is special to my 5-year old, who routinely trades for the most random pins, because something will just strike her fancy, and mainly because she just loves the process of trading.
Ditto with us. The pin she found she absolutely must have could easily be traded away the next night. On the past cruises, all the officers come out on the atrium and trade pins. I don't think their pins are any more special but it's a fun way to meet the officers.

No worries, we can open it up to others if you guys decide not to do it. As for setting up an additional tasting I can reach out to DCL but want to make sure there's enough interest for us to meet the minimum. Please PM or post here if you would be interested in a 2nd Disboard tasting. The easiest thing would be to go with the 2nd place choice of drink.
We may be up for a 2nd tasting and I like the idea of having one early on and one toward the end.

Ok, then they will both be bringing. As for ebay...I have had really good luck. I always read the review of the seller and make sure somewhere in the listing it says "disney stamped" or something like that. Another good source is the disney outlet stores, but they aren't around all the time. Disney store on line always has some good sales (and then I just buy several of that pin). And, if you can get to WDW...the recent get with purchase was a starter lanyard set of 8 pins for 15.95....couldn't pass that one by! On ebay, I try and get pins around the 2-3.00 per pin mark, but again, I haven't gotten any bad ones in my experience.

We get all our pins on eBay, and have had good luck so far. I have some favorite lot sellers that I could recommend to you if you want to PM me.

Thanks guys for the pin tips. I will PM for the favorite ebay sellers. I know my kids would be into it. They have no clue about it, so your kids can teach my kids. Maybe they can get together at the meets on in the port to talk pins.

So I finally finished my pirate costume shopping today. Next I am going to get the kids new Disney pajamas and have them laying on the turn downed beds the first night. Got that idea from the main board. Now it looks like I am on the search for pins to get them started. Isabelle's birthday is on the 19th and I am trying to think of some small gifts for her. I also want to get a photo mat to be signed by the characters for a nice family portrait to hang up back home. Geesh, the before cruise costs are adding up.

Oh I found it funny that you guys were trying to figure out my avatar. They are chocolate covered strawberries with the Palo logo stamped on the bottom of each. When Kevin and I did brunch there in January I was amazed at the strawberries and the Palo stamps. I though it was so neat and I had never seen anything like it. So I took a picture intending to use it as my avatar. After I loaded the photo I realized it does not look that clear, so I am intending to change it. I just have not had time or looked for another photo. So when you all dine there in 5 weeks, you can think of me when you see the strawberries.

Added pin trading and the tasting to the Dismeet list on the website and will update once we get more details.

I think I've missed a newbie... if anyone wants to be added to the roll call, provide more info, or send a photo, either PM me or send an email to travelbee1871@yahoo.com. We'd love to be able to put a face to the DIS name/real name!

And last call for anyone wanting to participate in the Secret Mickey. The closing date is tomorrow. Shortly after that (maybe by the weekend), you'll get an email either from me or Helen with the name of your Secret Mickey.

We may be up for a 2nd tasting and I like the idea of having one early on and one toward the end.
I will "3rd" a tasting at the end, as long as it doesn't interfer with Jackpot Bingo. :goodvibes

i just saw this in walt disney movies site do you think they will show it onboard?
Yes I would like to see this too and the new movie HOP. Hope it's on our cruise. I plan to put a thread out there around the beginning of April and see. :goodvibes

So far (culled from the posts by Savin4WDW - thanks Stacey!!!). This list also includes the RW name, and the collection preference if any. If you would like to join us - please do!! I have not made any decisions about where or when we will meet (there are a lot of events to consider as far as timing) and the location will depend on the interest (size of the group!) If you are on PinPics - please add that ID as well.
Go ahead and add me please...I will have to see if I can get JoJo to part with some.

I totally agree this is such fun for the kid and us too. Thanks Cayla for putting this together. :thumbsup2 Can we bring them to the

From another post:

In Walmart's photo frame section, they have a poster frame rack, and as part of it, a selection of mats. They have a mat that is specifically made for signatures, usually for wedding wishes. I believe it is 15x18 or so, and the cutout is 8x10. They only carry it in white and it was in the $8.00-range.
And, speaking of pajamas, is there a breakfast where we are all expected (or invited) to wear pajamas, including adults? 'Cuz that means we (Mom and Dad) need to look for something presentable to wear. Get your mind out of the gutter, ours are just well-worn and comfy.

One never really knows what someone else is looking for. I have had trouble with purchases off of eBay - counterfits and scrapper (pieces that were supposed to be destroyed that "fell" off the machines)...but you are more than welcome to come and look!!! The more the merrier!
If it's on a sea-day, I'll bring DD with her bag of pins.

LiserAnn's traders will be Ryan-12 and Drew-9. I'd say Ryan enjoys anything Pirates and Haunted Mansion, and Drew likes whatever catches his fancy, for sure Pirates. They don't know we're going on this cruise, it's a surprise so I'm probably not going to bring their regular collection else that will be a tip-off but I'll go through their pins and pull out some that I know they wouldn't notice and perhaps buy some to also get them trading.

Thanks!!!

Here is the updated tasting list. We have 48 people signed up leaving 2 spots but that may change as we may loose a few people. At the moment it looks like it will be a Mixology Tasting on April 18th.

I'd like to reach out to DCL by Thursday so they can get started on setting everything up. If you haven't already done so, please vote by end of day Wednesday. If anyone else is interested in joining us, please PM me or post here. Thanks :goodvibes

Great! Hopefully we can send you back to your friend with some new Stitch pins for a fellow alien-phile. :thumbsup2

We would pay for two (or more) tastings!:goodvibes It would be so hard to settle for just one ;)

Gailyn

hmmm..interesting thought. I think I would be up for a 2nd one. Maybe towards the end of our cruise as a last horah.

Sounds good to me. Dh and I will definitely be doing at least 2 tastings onboard.

We may be up for a 2nd tasting and I like the idea of having one early on and one toward the end.

Sounds like there is enough interest in a possible 2nd tasting. When I reach out to DCL in the next day or so regarding our original tasting I will check to see if we can do another one towards the end of the trip.

Pin Trading can be expensive and LOADS of fun...I have met some wonderful people through trading. There are events at most of the parks, and of course the yearly event at Epcot is usually attended by over 1000 people. So, how to start..well, how about if I create a "How To" sheet and email it along. There are some basic rules, and manners but other than that have fun! I do buy off eBay, I am just very careful as others have said. If it seems too good to be true - most likely is! Sticking to the 3.00 range for purchases is a good start, always find out if the pins are on original backer cards (scrappers and counterfits are not). Just because it has a back stamp does not necessarily make it a legit pin. I have seen some pretty good counterfits. I ordered 2 lots one time, they were exactly the same (including an LE20 ???!?!?!?!) my "warning Will Robinson" voice went off in my head. My ex and I had almost all of the pins in the lot and held the new ones up against the old...all were fakes. I got my money back, and reported the seller to eBay and Disney. That said - I have gotten some great lots as well. The outlets near WDW are a good source, private sales (I have many contacts and watch THESE boards for folks selling off collections). There used to be a board just for pins, but they have closed...so folks are kinda wandering around looking for each other.

Clever Disney, to come up with something that everyone enjoys and that nets them a pretty penny to boot!
Pin trading has been around since about 1990 (not sure on the history, I will confirm this if anyone needs specifics) Disney didn't get into the game until 2000. Now they have flooded the market and in some ways it has gotten much harder. I collect Winne the Pooh...there are over 4000 pins currently available, and more coming out every month...very hard to keep up with them! PinPics.com is an online registry for ones collection, traders and wants. This is a kid friendly website as well.

We have a dear friend who also loves Stitch, although I'm not sure what she has. I'll need to get an inventory list from her. We'll have our bag of random pins (also from ebay) DD is always on the look-out for princess pins.

If you drop off anything you want signed at Guest Relations at the start of the cruise, they will track down all the characters for you...then call you when it is ready. I have seen everything from pillow cases (or pillows) to matting, to tshirts, and one person had shorts signed. All fun...I have a large plain mat (the area around the picture is almost 6 inches, for a 6x9 photo) that I had signed years ago...I love it!

Funny, I have NEVER noticed the strawberries before...I have eaten at Palo at least 20 times that I can think of....now I have to look!!!!

Yes I would like to see this too and the new movie HOP. Hope it's on our cruise. I plan to put a thread out there around the beginning of April and see. :goodvibes

Yep, there is....it is a character b'fast done in Parrot Cay - lots of fun! Some folks wear their jammies over shorts so as to not have to go back to the cabin. I have traveled with someone who actually had jammies MADE for this...me - I wear Disney lounge pants and a t-shirt. And if I have luggage space - my huge "yella" feet slippers!
