Diego's Wish: I want to go to the Batcave...

My son Diego was diagnosed with Kidney cancer (Wilms tumor) last July at age 6. He had emergency surgery to have his left kidney removed and then underwent 5 months of chemo. He is currently 10 months off chemo and is NED (no evidence of disease). The chemo affected his nerves in his hands and legs and didnt start writing again till Aug. And even now he is not doing a lot of writing. He has a great teacher that will hopefully help him progress. He is in 1st grade, repeating it again because he missed so much last year and was not writing. But he is doing really great this year. He has some leg problem that we are doing PT for and also seeing a therapist for all the emotional stuff.

Diego was referred to make a wish and this is a video when I told him.

well the day the wish grantors came Diego had been playing alot of Lego Batman on the Wii (It was the day after he had surgery to have his port removed). So when they asked what he wished for he said the batcave. He was set on that. So he picked that a his first wish and Legoland (To see lego batman and robin) as his second wish.

Make a Wish did find a place in Arizona that had a batcave but it was the old school batcave and I knew that if we went Diego would know it wasnt "real". Plus after a bit of questioning he aid he wanted to go to the lego batcave...which doesnt exist. Also he isnt really into batman. I mean he likes him but he likes all the superheros...it just happened that he was planning the game at the time.

So Make a Wish decided to grant his second wish with a trip to orlando to go to legoland as well as the other parks.

I am a single mom so they told us that my mom could also come as the other parent and since Diego is only child they told him he could pick a "friend" so he picked my sister. After the planning started my dad didint want to be left out so we asked about him. They agreed to include him but we are paying his way (airfare, tickets, etc).

He got so skinny (36lbs and he was 6) that we also had to do a feeding tube...but thankfully at that point chemo went to every 3 weeks and the week before chemo he would eat.

My parents have been to Disney since they took us 25 years ago (before Animal Kingdom was there and DHS was called MGM).

M sister (Colleen), Diego and I went June 2013. One month before Diego was diagnosed. It was star wars weekend and was hot and rainy. Diego was not himself and I assumed it was just because he was hot. He didnt really eat or drink much and he was tired a lot. As it turns out it was the tumor that was pressing on his stomach. We had a great time but it wasnt as I expected and we spent a lot of time at the pool. So I kind of feel like this wish trip is a make up trip in a way.

Realized I never posted dates lol. We found out in Jule our flights and we are going Dec 7-13th. I was originally told we could not extend our trip but then was talking with local friends who said they were allowed to extended theres and I asked again and was told sure.

So We will be at GKTW from Dec 7-13 and then moving on over to Sheratan Vista (I think...need to double check that lol).

Still working thru what we will do each day and hopefully will be able to post a daily itinerary soon.

Countdown is on, only 34 more days till we leave on Diegos wish trip.

I really need to get our schedule set. I will hopefully be doing that soon. We have been busy with the CureSearch walk and Duke baseball drafted Diego to there team. Really cool program and the guys are great.

So I think we have day 1 and 2 semi scheduled lol.

Day 1 Sunday Dec 7
My parents and sister will be leaving from hartford so there flight is early...like 6:30am and they land in orlando at 10. Diego and I will be leaving from Raleigh so we leave around 9 and get to orlando at 10:30. The plan is to meet up with the family, get the rental and Drive to GKTW.

Hoping we can do a quick checkin and a quick orientation (might need to call them on this) grab some lunch to go and drive to seaworld. Originally we were going to use sunday to check out GKTW but I found out seaword stays open later on sunday and does extra christmas stuff. I am thinking if we can get there by 2 we should be ok. If things dont work out we will just stay at GKTW and do Seaworld on Monday.

Day 2 Monday Dec 8
The plan is to sleep in a bit and then check out GKTW. I might try to schedule some extras on that day like the skydiving or airplane ride but not sure. We plan on doing the party that night (I think its halloween) and getting to bed early.

THIS IS A GREAT START! Monday night is the Halloween Party. If you go to GKTW website you can print their weekly schedule!

I did check out the GKTW schedule and we are going to at least make Halloween, Bday and Christmas. We will see how the rest go.

I got the email today from Southwest about my trip being around the corner. I cant believe how soon it is.

I really want to order some matching shirts. Anyone have any advice on where is best place?

I was told that Halloween and Christmas are do not miss at GKTW village. We ordered shirts from this Facebook site. The women was amazing and they weren't crazy expensive like some other sites I found.
