Did your kid(s) grow sea legs?

Hi,

I wanted to poll the audience as it relates to your child(ren) having any trouble acclimating to being at sea? We will be going on our first Disney cruise March 2016. I'm a planner and want to be prepared for any/all worst case scenarios. As much as one can

My DD had no trouble being on the ship, but she's not one to get motion sick a lot. She'll occasionally feel a little queasy in the car if she's reading a book or playing on the ipad, but I just open the window a little and have her look out rather than down and she perks right back up.

Just follow the same things that help anyone who might feel seasick: book a mid-ship stateroom, get some Bonine and have everyone take it before getting on the ship, buy some Sea Bands, and hope that your kids aren't prone to motion sickness. There's not much more you can.

Both my boys have been good on our last 3 cruises.
Dinner on the first night is probably the worst we have experienced in terms of movement, once you get through that it is smooth sailing .... other than if there is bad weather.

We all took Bonine the night before our cruise and again on the first night. After that, we didn't take it and we all felt fine.

We had Sea Bands, in case.

I heard green apples and ginger ale can help with sea sickness. Also get fresh air and look at the horizon.

My DS (13 & 9 first cruise) had no problems at all. I was nervous also because they both had been on boats but not a lot. Just be prepared with bands and/or medicine.

My daughter gets horrible nausea from being in a car or plane. It's more the vibrations than anything, so I was a bit concerned. She also doesn't like to take medicines or feel dopey so we didn't want to rely on Dramamine. We bought her sea bands. The first night she was a little nauseated and her poor dinner choice didn't help (even I didn't like it when I tried it). Our (wonderful) server brought her something else when he noticed she wasn't eating it. It was much better and she ate almost all of it. Once she slept and woke back up she was fine. She actually found floating in the pool to be helpful and she did wear her sea bands almost the entire time.

Most kids do not have any problems.

If you feel your children will have a problem, there is a.multitude of meds for kids on the market.

I would sugeest calling your kids Doctor and ask what he recommends to bring with you, if your kids do have problems

My tiny grand-princesses have cruised twice, the first time they were barely 3 & 5 y.o. They did great. That was a week long Alaska cruise. We took them on the Dream for a 4 night a year ago when they were not yet 4 & 6 y.o. Still did great! Absolutely NO issues at all. They LOVE DCL!!

My kids are used to be on boats, small ones, and DD sails her own opti in the open ocean (so, she's pretty experienced with water-based motion) and DS will start next year. I imagine the motion is worse in a small boat, but having never been on a cruise, I'm not sure.

Has anyone had any experience with Alaska and sea sickness? Hubby and I did a rt from SFO about 10 years ago and we hit a really bad storm, looking at the itinery for June, it looks like we stay pretty close to land. Any feedback is great, Thanks!

Not specific to kids, but I can have issues with small boats and haven't felt even the slightest bit seasick on cruises. Of course, I haven't sailed when there is a big storm.

You are most welcome, CruisingfromTX. DCL's Alaskan cruises have left out of Vancouver, BC for some time so there is virtually no open water on their itineraries. It would take really horrible weather to cause enough to notice since this cruise is an inside passage cruise. Ya'll should be just fine. And it is a GORGEOUS cruise. Enjoy!

My oldest was six on our first cruise and he felt a little "off". We use seabands and he put them on and was fine after that. My girls never had any sea sickness at all and my son never has after that first cruise. But I do recommend the seabands, especially for an all-natural remedy! They work for me if I start to get a headache or feel a little dizzy, but I've never had bad seasickness. Good luck!

I bought Psi Bands and had everyone in the family wear them the first day and on days w/ rough seas (tropical storm). We didn't have any problems, but we usually don't get motion sickness.

My DS typically gets a little sea sick the first evening going out of port. Always at dinner probably because we are sitting down inside the ship. However he has never thrown up. After that first evening he is good to go, no more sea sick issues. He grew some sea legs.

My oldest and myself are major motion sickness people on land, but have never experienced seasickness. It is really a unique thing, not like car sickness, and very individual.

Your best bet, if you live near water, is to take a day sail somewhere in a smaller vessel, like a sailboat or catamaran. That will give you a chance to acclimate to the feeling. (my oldest sails in summer and we live near the water, so this helps) Also, get a stateroom aft or midship with a verandah on an upper deck for your cruise.
