Did your baby/toddler get a fever when teething?

I think my toddler is finally getting her first set of molars. I can't say for sure because she won't let us look. Anyway, she had a fever for the first time ever today. It was 101.8, and then 99.8 after I gave her infant Motrin. She seems fussy/restless, but is otherwise fine...no signs of an ear infection or major congestion or anything. Does this sound like it could be from teething?

I don't think that this is a high enough fever to call the on-call ped., especially since it came down after the Motrin. Since DD has never really had a fever before, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to call or not for a fever, though. She is 13 months-old and it seems like she's been teething in these molars forever.

Yes, what I'm reading sounds so familiar. If you have Hilands that would help too. Its homeopathic and helps ease the pain of teething. I just gave some to my 6yr old b/c one back molar is breaking in. Amazingly, Hylands calm my kids down. Where as I got got fussing and screaming with the Orajel.

Yep, both of them did. Ped said it was normal, but if you think it's getting too high, give your ped a call. They also tended to pull at their ears.

Hilands don't work for my DD unfortunately. We tried them a bunch of times last year. Even Tylenol doesn't do much. Motrin usually helps more than it's helping today. That's why I think it must be her molars.

Do you have any popsicles? That might help relieve the pain temporarily :confused3

Both of my sons ran fevers when they were teething! Popsicles helped and tylenol too. I also used Anbesol which didn't seem do a whole heck of a lot.

Good luck, this too will pass!

Forgot to add, years ago we had our grandparents telling us to rub a small amount of peach brandy on their gums!

I never went that far, but I bet it was applied to our gums when we were infants!

Yes, older dd always ran a mild fever. Our 18 mth old only has 8 teeth, but she also runs a mild fever. You said Tylenol etc doesn't work well for your dd, I wish I had a better suggestion, but that's what I use too.

Both DDs ran temps. My older one, ran a high temp, w/ almost any illness. Needless to say, I worried alot.

Try, letting her chew on a frozen waffle. Kind of messy, but it does help.

DS has gotten low fever (usually 99) and loose stools with each tooth so far. He's 14mo and has several molars already, the molars did seem to take longer to come in. Doc said this is normal and her kids were the same. Although DS is not usually fussy, he does become more irritable when tired while teething. Hope this helps. Also, we give DS infant pain reliever before bed.

My son never did. He would just wake up with another tooth! I was spoiled!

101.8 is pretty close to 102 degrees. Usually 102 (rectal) is a sign of an infection. My kids did run temperatures when they teethed, but that is because they got an ear infection every time they cut a tooth. They didn't tug at their ears with every infection.

Temperature is usually slightly elevated in the morning and highest in the late afternoon/early evening.

If you are using an oral thermometer, or an ear thermometer giving you an oral equivalent, then it would be considered a high enough fever to indicate infection at 101 degrees.

Funny you say that because I had gone to visit my grandparents with my DS who was teething. My grandma took him for a while and came back he was happy as could be, I was amazed at that "grandmother's touch" thing, but when I went to give him a kiss, I could smell tequila! Yup she rubbed it in his gums LOL

My oldest suffered with each erupting tooth. Frozen bagels, a cold spoon, and freezing those baby tea biscuits helped. I know many babies that get irritable and a fever when they are teething. I used the motrin as well since we noticed no difference with any other treatment.

DD now has one molar as of last night. She threw up a bunch of times too, and her fever went up to 102.5 before it started coming down. I am using an ear thermometer. If she still has a temp tomorrow, I'm making an appt. to take her to her ped. asap. I am worried that maybe she did get an ear infection from this teething misery. Did your children require antibiotics for those teething-related ear infections? DD has never been sick except for one cold and has never needed antibiotics.

My father did the same thing, only it was Southern Comfort that did the trick for my DS. And I will get flamed, but this is the only thing I used when he was teething. I tried everything else, but the Southern Comfort was the only thing that worked, so I stuck with what worked.

Does rubbing it on the gums take care of the fever as well:confused3 At this point, I'm game to try anything to prevent DD going through what she went through last night again.

My oldest ran extremely high temp's while teething. I mean rushing to the ER to get it down high temps. They took blood, they checked ears, never an infection or a virus they could find by taking his blood. He was just teething. My dh had the same problem only worse, he actually had seizures his fever got so high. They never found anything wrong with him either. DD also had fevers from teething, but rarely over 101, thank God!

Wow! It's interesting to hear that other kids have had high temps just from teething. Today the molar has broken through and DD's temp is back to normal:confused3 I keep taking it every hour or so to make sure, but so far so good. I'm pretty sure that the high temp and the vomiting was all from teething. How awful. She didn't have this happen when her first teeth (non molars) came through. If her temp had gone one degree higher, we would have headed to the ER as well.
