Did you Square Dance?

Debbie Twiggs, we had to do it in grade school, and she was allways my partner because she was the tallest girl in our class and I was the tallest boy

I did sqaure dancing back in Primary School, but my kids have never done it!

I remember square dancing in gym in high school. We had a blast! But it was just the girls. It was much better than when we had lacrosse and I got hit in the throat with that ball!

I took a square dancing class in college!! One of the easiest A's I got!!!;) :D It was a lot of fun.

We had square dancing in gym class 6-8th grade. I don't think they do it anymore. I love dancing and think it's a blast. Unfortunately not many places have square dances.

I don't remember any of the steps. All I remember is, "Swing yer partner, do si do", and "an alemen left, and an alemen right!"

"Now bow to yer left...and bow to yer right!":D

Not only did I do it, but I often got called on to help demonstrate as my dad used to be a square dance caller! The gym teachers would learn the steps from books and were often wrong. I used to go with my parents to dances and learned most of it that way. I found myself correcting my gym teacher on more than one occasion, smart alek that I was! LOL

I loved it then and still do, although I haven't been to a square dance in years!

DH and I used to square dance, back in the early 80's. We belonged to a local club called the Calico Couples and went dancing every Saturday night. Most were regular club dances, but we often "traveled" to other clubs to dance, and there were special dances occasionally like the "Donkey Dance" (using a real live donkey, and a jar of peanut butter! ) and there were national conventions yearly that were held in different states. It was fun, and we still have all our outfits in the closet upstairs.

Nope, but when I was in 1st Grade I went to a square dance and made friends with a girl who was a year older than me. We spent the whole night dancing in some way that I guess we though was square dancing up on the stage (I don't remember a whole lot but my mom has pictures.)

Ugh, yeah. Elementary and middle school. Worst times EVER. For a shy girl, it is so tormenting to be set up with some random boy. If you got the cute boy, you were shy and thought about messing up the whole time, which you almost definitely did. If you got the boy that you liked the least (you know, the kind that picked his nose and ate it ;) TMI? lol ) you had to endure that.

I would have much rather done country line dancing. Gets your heart pumping a whole lot more, and you could avoid the whole boy girl tourments at such a young age.

I think if we did it in high school it would have been a lot more fun. The whole "boys have cooties" days would have been over, and the middle school awkwardness would have been gone.

Oh yes, we got our square dance groove on in middle school. Not so much fun for me, however, because at 5'6" (at the time) I was easily the tallest in my gym class, including the boys. Pretty embarassing when I ended up having to dance with the gym teacher -- doubly so when the teacher was a woman! ;)

Yes, it was in sixth grade (last year of elementary). We had sixth grade camp - a week at a camp about an hour northwest of home - and the Square Dance was the culminating event of the week. So we had square dance lessons in gym for a few weeks before; yielding a room filled with nervous fear mixed with confused anticipation: school-approved contact with the opposite sex was good, but what if you got paired up with that tall redhead :p (actually, being tall and shy myself, that would have been a desirable outcome - at the big camp dance, I got paired up with a girl whose feet didn't touch the ground when she sat at her desk. Ah, height mis-matches....)

Come to think of it, though, now that I can pick my partner (although DW is not tall, she makes my heart do-si-do) it might be a lot of fun.
