Did you purchase things for your unborn child years before she/he was born?

Here's my two cents like it or not. ;)

BTW, how are things going with the condo in FL? Did I miss an update on that? And since you are going to be there will you be joining us on the first ever ladies only DIS meet? :thumbsup2

Hope so!!

We got the townhouse  it will be done towards the end of July. We've picked out our flooring, countertops, appliances, window treatments you name it. Now we are deciding if we want hardwood on the stairs and upstairs hallways, we need to decide quick so they know how much to order.

We are so excited. I can't wait until July, I can't wait to decorate and have painted walls.

I am so slow, it didn't even click to me that I could go on the Ladies on Disney trip. Duh Malaysia you'll live in florida, can I slap myself!

Our house is about 1.5 hours away, maybe a little less, maybe I can drive up and meet you ladies while there. I've never been to WDW, only Disneyland, I've never even been to California Adventure. :sad2:

About the book, "I love you forever", am I the only one that finds that book seriously creepy and disturbing? :confused3
:lmao: :lmao: Okay in the middle of the book where he's grown and she drives over there to sneak in his room, that is a little too much IMO but the overall message and theme of the book is great. Just skip that part! :rotfl2:

:woohoo: Congrats on the townhouse!! I am so happy for you two. That's great.

YES! you must join us! Either come for the whole time or once things start getting planned more (right now we just set the dates and are working on a resort) you guys can even join us for a day or an evening out. Especially if you've never been. It should be a blast and the more the merrier. :)

Malaysia we bought things for our unborn baby before it was conceived too. The first one that is, not the one I'm currently pregnant with. We went to DL in March 2002 and I just had to have this little bear outfit for our future child-it is a little hooded jacket, mittens, bib, and booties. Well even though Madison was born in February 2004, we weren't planning to start ttc till May 2004 so I guess you could say we bought it 3 years in advance. It started a trend that everywhere we went we'd buy a little t-shirt or onesie for the baby.

We also got a couple of toys about 6 months before Madison was conceived just cause I liked them and they were being discontinued (an exersaucer that I loved comes to mind, that my mom's puppy just ate so now I have to get a new one for baby#2 anyway). Strollers though, I would wait on that cause new things come out so often that you won't like the old one you have when you see the new ones after your baby is born. Also, if you got a stroller with a carseat, they expire after 5 years (the carseat) so you wouldn't be able to use it. Oh, and my kids will be 2.5 years apart and we're not getting a double stroller so I definitely wouldn't just get one from the start cause you may end up not wanting/needing it.

One of my closest friends has a box of items for a future baby and she isn't even dating anyone right now. She loves the Beatles and has bought Beatles onesies and other accessories, she has purchased Disney DVD's and other little clothes and shoes too. The box is mostly contributed to by her mother who really wants a grandchild.

I would definitely hold off on major purchases, everything gets sleeker and safer as the years go by.

I didn't buy a thing until I found out I was having a girl at 6 months, then I went crazy.

Oh and congratulations on your Townhouse, I am very excited for you!!!

I have bought books/DVD's for our future child, but nothing else. I've always justified the books by saying that I'm a teacher and can use them in my classroom if "baby" never happens.

Once a saw the most adorable Ralph Lauren baby sweater at TJ Maxx, super cheap, and I almost got it...but then I thought it would be a little creepy. I dunno. To each his/her own!

My mom worked in the infants dept. at a BIG department store that did special order bedding and nursery items. When something was ordered that was wrong or mis-ordered they would sell it off CHEAP! By the time I was entering high school she had already purchased a nursery full of Peter Rabbit! I've got bedding, mobile, night lights, lamp, stuffed plush, silver comb and brush set, silver cup and spoons, plates, art work, books and just about anything else that has Peter Rabbit on it! If it's Peter Rabbit, it's sitting in the closet of my front bedroom. She still occasionally finds something Peter Rabbit and buys it. A couple of years ago she found a Peter Rabbit snowsuit for 90% off and bought it. I think she's jinxed me, no babies yet! I thought about putting it all up on Ebay, but I just can't bring myself to do it!

I think SO is getting the mommy feeling really bad and it maybe sooner than 5 years before the unborn child arrives.

I agree with those that say you don't want a double stroller. They are a huge pain. Don't get one until you absolutely need it. And really anything like that you shouldn't buy 5 years out. They will be really outdated. And they'll just get in your way at home. I don't see a problem with getting books and DVDs though.

OK I have not heard about this book "I love you forever". I'm very intrigued by the different opinions! :rotfl:

maybe you can talk her into opening a savings account for the baby instead. anytime she sees something she wants to buy she can take that money and put it into the account so it is there when you need it. or you can put away a certain amount every pay check

That's a great idea!

Although I think I will be guilty or ordering a couple of books before it goes out of print. Hopefully I can hold out until we move in July so we don't have to pack it.

Virgo, by the way I love your cat gallery. I can't believe April came from the SPCA! How can anyone not want her??

(whoops, wrong topic! Doing too many DIS things at once!)

I haven't read all the posts but..

I think you two should just plan on starting your family sooner than the 5 years you are thinking of. It sounds like you're ready!!!

DH and I started TTC our first this past January. This is cycle three, keep your fingers crossed! We were in NYC this past Christmas and I saw the cutest Christmas clothes from the GAP at 70% off and I admit to buying a few in 0-3 and 3-6 mo sizes. Then at Sears there were some really cute 75% My First Christmas outfits...this time I bought 0-3 mo sizes as if I get pg this month the due date would be 12/2.

As for my sanity, my best friend is pregnant and due late July so she can havee the 3-6 month old stuff and my other really good friend is PG and due in October so she can have the 0-3 mo stuff!!

I love looking at baby stuff. I spend lots of time wondering around Target, just day dreaming. I currently have a favorite Graco pattern that I love!!!

Many years ago (we're talking early 20s - I am 36 now) I fell in love with a cute little outfit for a baby girl. I bought it and packed it away in my closet and carried it around with me from move to move, etc., for my someday baby girl.

Well, 16 years later, here I am...and I had two boys. :confused3 I gave the outfit to our nanny in Seattle who is getting married this fall and told her I hoped she could make use of it. :goodvibes

So, the moral of the story is that if you are planning ahead for that future baby, things like Disney DVDs - good. Gender specific clothing - DON'T DO IT! :)

I like the savings account idea!

Books are always available - Amazon and Barnes and Noble sell used books, and there is always ebay. That's just an idea - if you don't want to store them for the next five years.

I did buy things for my future children. DH and I fell in love with a nursery set and it was being discontinued so we drove all over southern California hitting all these different Sears stores to get the complete set about 2 years before our first baby was born!!

:)

After my DW lost her first child due to an ectopic pregnmancy, we did not buy anything of consequence until AFTER our kids were born..........
