Did you know this? re:oil spill

Wow that is unbelievable. You'd think the oil people would have progressed since then... btw I like Rachel Maddow...good story.

I like her too but had never heard of her before this.

It was an amazing report.

I dont remember this happening but if anything can be positive about this mess is that nature CAN recover. Obviously this is a disaster and I dont mean to take anything away from that, but there is hope that if we have made it through this before we can do it again.

Did anyone esle know of this? How strange.

What do they say? "those who do not learn from our history we are doomed to repeat it" Why didnt we learn anything the last time this happened?

On the upside it does give me hope that things will recover albeit slowly.

That's easy! Sorry Binny but here is one case where all of us shoulder the blame. As long as Americans can get gasoline easily and cheapily we don't give a flying fig about any thing else.

Environmentalist have been screaming for decades about hazards and we portray them as tree hugging nuts.

When gas hit $4.00 bucks 2 summers ago, everybody (general use of word) swore they were turning in their big gas guzzlers for fuel efficient vehicles. that lasted about 3 weeks, Ford just announced a huge increase in sales of their trucks.

Why should the oil companies change? We don't. These stories are from 31 years ago, 1979. the same techniques used to clean up, same companies building the rigs? the only thing that has changed has been we are now more dependant on oil than ever.

Sorry, I find all this "concern" now extremely hypocritical especially since I'm willing to bet this time next year, no one will be concerned with any thing except how much it cost to fill up the oversized minivan.

We changed. We traded in our mini van for a more fuel efficient cross over (although it is too small for us). We really dont use that car though, I think we only put about 1500 miles on it last year. It does get 29 MPG on the highway though! We use the company vehicle which is a much smaller compact SUV.

I dont think its all on us though, honestly. I think the oil companies waited until the outrage passed then "forgot" about the promises they made. What about the government? Shouldnt they, the body who overseas the industry, shoulder some of the blame here?

I don't disagree with any of the above.

I do, however, think it is not unfair to point out that repairing this leak would be infinitely easier if it were not in 5,000 feet of water. If this drill were in 20-50 feet of water it probably would have been fixed in days at the most. Instead we force these giant rigs to be built so far offshore in such deep water that any disaster of this magnitude is magnified and made that much more difficult to fix. It certainly doesn't help. So much for the idea that forcing the rigs far offshore would prevent a coastal disaster - instead it has prolonged the leak and if anything made the situation worse because of the extended time for more oil to leak out.
