Did you know car rentals worked like airlines in this regard?

I got an e-mail today from Alamo with a $199 per week special on vans through 6/25. I've been helping my BIL & SIL look for the best deal on a van to rent for their vacation since vacation planning is kind of my "thing". So I went online and it said no vans were available. Just to be sure I called Alamo and got a really helpful lady. She said there are plenty of vans available to rent in Salt Lake City for the time we need but they only had a few vans at the $199 per week rate and those were already reserved. I knew airlines sold their seats this way but thought if they advertised a certain price on a certain size vehicle that meant they were all available for that price. What a bummer!!!

That is odd but then again no different than hotels either I guess. Its too bad that you didn't get the rate for them.

yes, but unlike airfares, you can reserve car's and keep checking around - and the rates will change often. It's all based on availability. If their dates are firm and they won't be cancelling, you should make the best reservation you can find, then a week or so before the trip try priceline. We use priceline for car rentals for vacations all the time and are always pleased.

I saw the same deal, that was if you had a quicksilver membership right? I've checked for availbility for my vacation and they are all out.

Oh, and yes, I've experienced the 'only a few at that rate' kinda thing before.

Like By The Sea, I have had the best luck with Priceline for car rentals. I do as exactly as she said, reserve the car at the best rate I can find, then wait until a week or so before my trip and try to get something better. I've never been disappointed, and have always saved myself a mint.
