I have yet to get turned off by coffee in the morning.I've been mixing 1/2 coffee with 1/2 hot chocolate.I've been SO tired that I need this first thing to get going. My doctor said 1 cup a day is fine but I read yesterday that caffeine can contribute to miscarriages.I only drink 1 cup but I'm concerned more this time about miscarriages because of my age-I'm 35.With A.J. I couldn't even look at coffee after about 8 weeks!
What do you think?

No. I stayed away from caffeine during my pregnancy but my OB did say that in limited amounts it was OK.

I did end up giving in to my Coke addiction just about 3 hours before I went into labor! I think the caffeine jolted the little guy! ;)

No, I quit cold turkey. After Michael was born there was a report put out that it was okay to have a little but I didn't want to take any chances. I had lost enough children and wanted this one bad! I was the epitome of good health those months!

Oh, BTW, I told everyone that I wanted caffeine pumped into me INTRAVENOUSLY right after he was born! It is my only addiction of choice... :p

I gave up on caffeine a month before I got pregnant for both and then stayed off.

Between that and being pregnant, I could hardly stay awake the first month!!

Also, husband quit smoking a month before I got pregnant with our first!!! What a wonderful gift for your kids!

I love coffee.:)

When I was pregnant with my dd, I read caffeine can damage the baby's heart, so I went off caffeine (cold turkey too:eek: ). I craved coffee with a vengence too! I could smell coffee on people's breaths from 20 feet away. As soon as I had her, I begged for a coke and guzzled it down.:teeth: And I don't really like coke too much (I prefer Dr Pepper as far as canned soft drinks go:p ). My dd loves the smell of coffee now.

With my ds, I couldn't resist the urge though.:o I limited my caffeine to 2-3 times a week. That coffee tasted good too.:teeth: He likes the smell of coffee now, but nothing like his sister does.:)

I never had morning sickness and the smell of food never nauseated me either time I was pregnant. I was very lucky.

I still need my coffee! I'm about 20 weeks. DH makes it every morning with half decaf/half regular & I have 1 normal sized mug. I gave up other stuff with caffeine like Coke & tea. You get used to it quickly. I was so tired at first that all the caffeine in the world wouldn't have helped!

For me, I think it's more the taste & smell of coffee than the up. Try decaf! You might like it. :)

I gave up coffee cold turkey too, but about 24 weeks along I was literally falling asleep at my desk at work:eek: and I went and gor a mountain dew and hostess cupcakes out of the vending machine:rolleyes: I had that "fix" a lot during the duration. I wish I had had the strength to give up caffiene, but I just didn't make it the whole way. With DS, I was able to, but I was not working then so it was easier I think.
Hang in there!

YES - also recommended was a glass of wine each day which I didn't do. Only thing I gave up was medicine of any kind. In those days coffee, cigarettes, wine, etc. was not discouraged or forbidden.

Is there a lot of caffeine in hot chocolate?I'm thinking maybe I'll mix 1/2 decaf 1/2 hot chocolate?Better?Funny thing is now I seem to be craving the hot chocolate taste more and I NEVER drink hot chocolate and barely eat any sweets!

Chocolate of any kind does have caffeine. It's hidden everywhere!

How far along are you?

Just about 5 weeks. You all convinced me that caffeine is out!I didn't have any this morning.and I'll stick with it.
Kim

That's a good idea. DH just reminded me that we didn't switch to half & half until I was about 3 months. See what being pregnant does to you?? :teeth:

I was addicted to slurpee's. It's not a cold coke but it will give you a jolt from all the coldness!!

you all are braver than I am. I had 3 babies and drank my coffee throughout. My doctor said it was fine even up to 2 or 3 cups a day  well at the time my habit wasnt that strong lol.
I did need my cup in the morning and never had any issues.

All of my doctors also said the occasional glass of wine was fine. I only did that at special occasions though :) like New Years eve and our Anniversary.

I had to have some caffeine while I was pregnant, especially with my youngest DD. I was working 12 hour night shifts in the NICU, and I just couldn't make it without some help, no matter how much rest I got during the day.

BTW, all the OBs I worked with think 1-3 cups of coffee, or 1-2 cans of Coke per day are fine. However, if you are able to give up caffeine altogether, that is fabulous! Congrats again on your pregnancy!

I did just want to add that while I think it can be fun and informative to ask pregnancy questions (or any medical question) here on the boards (heck I sure did enough of it) please make sure to check with your own OB before making any decisions. There could be specific information related to your history that could make a big difference.

I think that's great that your giving it up if that's what you think is best. I admit that I drank both coffee and coke while pregnant with DD & DS and they were both fine. I have since started drinking decaf for other reasons and its not bad.

Being a diet coke addict, I had a hard time not drinking it during my first pregnancy. Everything else(non caffine drinks included) made me sick to my stomach. When I ask my doctor about this he said that yes, caffine AND nutrasweet(gasp!) are all right if they are taken in limited amounts. Obviously, I cut back, but I did continue with my diet coke...for both pregnancies, and the kids turned out fine(well, some times I question that, LOL!)

I really just want my 1 cup in the morning!I never drink much more than that anyways.I drink water mostly during the day but sometimes just need something with taste and carbonation so I have been drinking caffeine free diet pepsi.I also have been drinking milk!If I do decide to have a glas of wine or something like that it definately won't be until after the first trimester and it would be on a RARE special occasion. My OB last pregnancy had told me to drink a glass of red wine at night when I was suffering from insomnia but I just couldn't get it down!He also said 1-2 cups of coffee a day is fine just not more.
