I wondered about that too. I think a lot of kids may not know the term, but nearly all would know the act exists by this age.

I would be willing to bet if you asked most kids what SODOMY was, they'd have no idea. Heck, many adults don't know what that word means.

But that doesn't mean they don't know about the ACT.

Well, then they did learn something! I don't know if the term comes up on the SAT's, but it's one that will probably be come across in literature.

Most gay men do engage in anal sex, but a significant minority do not for a variety of reasons. There is a lot more to gay male intimacy than just anal sex.

I'm very much in favor of comprehensive sex ed programs for teens. But I absolutely cannot support a teacher taking it on herself to tackle the subject in a "religion and ethics" course without parental consent. Not even if it's because of "the elimination of sex-ed courses in Quebec". (Which is a crying shame, if it's true.)

All in all, this sounds like a terrible way to teach sex ed, and the parents have a right to be outraged.

Besides, what could the "right" answer to "all sexual positions are comfortable" possibly be? Has the teacher tried them all? How would she know?

She definitely crossed the line. If they were basic questions about premarital sex (facts, not opinions) or teen pregnancy or something (since it was an religion/ethics class) fine, but those questions are ridiculous.

The only thing that makes me feel better about it is that it was multiple choice. If it were fill in the blanks, I'd think the teacher was probably a pervert wanting to get off on the answers.

For those who are not aware, the term sodomy is not limited to anal intercourse. It is any act that is "unnatural" (natural being sex for procreation ). Some state laws considered "petting" sodomy.

As the father of a 13 yo 8th grader, I would not have been concerned.

I do question the intelligence of the teacher for having done this without running it past the school's administration given the ban of sex ed classes there.

Not only were the questions totally inapporpriate for that age level, but even if a 13 yr. old were sexually active to "some" degree, there are questions on that test that the students would have no way of knowing unless they were extremely sexually active - with people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and assorted sexual orientations/preferences..

Change my "furious" to "livid"..

I wonder how long all of this was being discussed. Was this some sort of pre-test? If not, I'm shocked the kids hadn't mentioned it to their parents before the test.

Anyway, I would be upset. Not as livid as if a teacher told my 7 year old there was no Santa (still over that one), but this would definitely make me angry and make me question the teacher's sanity.

What different religions see as acceptable/unacceptable sexual behavior is a relevant topic for study in a religious ethics class, but eigth graders might be too young to discuss the topic intelligently. Maybe the teacher was discussing anal sex in relation to Sodom and Gomorrah. We don't know, but IMO, the audience is still too young.
