I went to a beauty school to get my hair cut. The total was $9 but it took her 2 hours! No special style, just a regular trim. I tipped her $3 but I wondering if that was enough. At a regular salon it only takes about 20 mins and is $17. What do you think and what would you tip?

did it make you sexier, thats priceless

Well when volunteering at a beauty school you have to take into account your donation of anxiety. What if they totaly hack you?

the extra time is not your fault. But I think $3 is about the smallest amount that ladies tip a good hairdresser.

I would probably tip $2 as I always give a minimum of 20% for hair. But I would seriously be angry with the situation. I thought generally people go there to save money while the beauty schoolers get practice.
Time IS money. What a waste!

I wonder how many haircuts she had done. I remember my first haircut took close to 3 hours, LOL. Thankfully, it was my mom. It was probably the most perfect haircut I ever did.
I actually went to a hairshow once where an experienced guy took about 2 hours doing a cut and he wasn't explaining step by step or anything. The other guy with him said that he just takes that long to do a haircut. It was painfully slow to watch. I kept thinking that he'd have to charge an awful lot to make that worth his while!

I'm sure your tip was just fine. I think it was brave and super nice of your to use the beauty school. You can get good services there. Speed with precision comes with some practice. I am sure she was grateful for you.

She said she had been there for 10 months. She had done lots of haircuts and was praticing a up-do on a head when I came in. She did really good.

Well, she'll pick up speed, I hope/think.

If not, she'll need to get a lot more than that $9 that she charges in beauty school. I wonder how long beauty school lasts? I took it in HS and had it for 3 years 3 hours a day.

I just took DD to the beauty school for all-over hi-lites and a trim. :scared:
I sat beside her the whole time (hope I didn't make the stylist-in-training nervous).

She did okay, considering she is still learning. I went in there with the mindset that it was not going to be perfect. DD told her she was okay with it when she was done, but there is a spot on her bangs that should have had hi-lites (and does not) and the bangs are a little bit shorter than she would have liked. It took about 3 hours total, which is probably close to normal for sectioning and putting all those foils in place. DD paid the fee, $45, but we did not tip. I didn't think it was appropriate for the students to accept tips, but what do I know.
