Hi All,
I just made ressies at SSR for a studio for Aug. 31- Sept. 5. Knowing that we did this last minute (airfair is really good) I didn't expect to get Boardwalk or VWL. No biggie, I haven't stayed at SSR yet and I have only heard positive things. I had an opportunity to get a cabin at Fort Wilderness for very cheap using cash, not points. I am taking my mother and it is her first time going to WDW EVER. Me and my DS4 and DS2 will be with her. I wanted to stay at VWL or use more cash so she would be so impressed, but my husband frowned upon the cash thing since we were returning in October (next month) just our immediate family (he won't be with us on this first trip). So I didn't get the cabin just the studio at SSR. Did I make the right choice? Any suggestions for requests for rooms? Just looking for reasurrance. Thanks!! :confused3 :confused3

I think you did make the right decision. I doesn't make much sense to pay cash for rooms when you already paid tons of money to buy membership in DVC. The rooms at SSR have upscale furnishings, so I would think that your mother would be very impressed. Also, if you've NEVER been to WDW before, isn't EVERYTHING YOU SEE IMPRESSIVE?!

Enjoy your trip and PLEASE POST PICS and let us know how things went at SSR!!! :cool1:

if your mom likes shopping :rotfl: ask for CONGRESS PARK AREA. great quiet pool and easy walk to DTD for shopping and food.

very nice resort

I think a SSR studio will be fine. Although, maybe you could keep checking for a cancellation at the VWL or BWV up until you check in, too? Who knows, there might be a cancellation.

You made the right choice. The studios at SSR are great and I agree a downtown Disney view from Congress Park is a very good request. I think that the cabins at Fort Wilderness are dated. Fort Wilderness is very large and difficult without a car. The pool is old and not near as nice as High Rock Springs. Just my opinion.

I took my mom in May, she hadn't been to WDW since 1976-1977. We stayed in a 2BR at SSR and she was floored.

She is going with us again in February and when I told her maybe we would stay somewhere else, she was like..."Ohh really? <sigh> I liked Saratoga Springs alot. Do we really have to stay somewhere else?"

She also asked me, immediately after we bought in, if she would be able to use our points to stay at SSR alone sometime. :teeth:

She loved the resort, and the walking distance to DTD clinched it for her. She has even suggested she might go in with us on an add-on so she can have some extra points to use. :thumbsup2

SSR is a beautiful, elegant resort that does not have an over-the-top theme park feel/atmosphere. I think your mother will love it after a day in the busy theme parks!

Take advantage of the special features of SSR - like the games for kids at/in the pool, boat ride to DTD. The Artists Point has very adult/woman friendly food (like chocolate kisses cheesecake, flatbread and salads) rather than just hot dogs, fries and burgers.

If you really want to impress her - you ought to schedule a pedicure at the spa for mid-week when everyone's feet are tired out! ;)

Good idea. Or maybe a massage. Nothing like it! :thumbsup2

The pool should also be great with children the age of yours. I bet you have a wonderful time.

I agree with what everyone has said so far... (Though I have never stayed at SSR..)

The FW Cabins are great.. The main issue is that they are really secluded and depending on what cabin you got, your mother would have a lot of walking to do, just to get to an internal bus, which then you would have to transfer to another bus..

With the cabins, there is no washer or dryer... You need to go to one of the community areas and use the quarter washer/dryers.

The SSR pool is also MUCH nicer than FW's.. FW is a standard pool.. SSR has the sprinker park, water slide, poolside bar, jacuzzi, etc...

Lastly, let us not forget the Spa.. :thumbsup2

Let me preface this with saying we like all WDW resorts, and we stay at all the WDW resorts. So I am not putting down any resort, in any way, shape or form.
We have stayed at both resorts. We have stayed in the FW cabins many times, going back to the late 70's when they were the old trailers. We just recently stayed at SSR in June. We like both resorts and will stay at both again.
I do have a different opinion then most, though. I would recommend staying in the FW cabins and using the saved pts to get a bigger villa for your immediate families vacation. The reason I say this, is I think the FW cabins will be a better fit for your traveling group. We like SSR very much and it is a lovely resort, but a stuido compared to a FW cabin is much more confined. In a FW cabin everyone will have their own bed, you will have a full kitchen--which comes in very handy with little ones even if just for snacks, bottles and juice. You will have a separate lr & br. You will overall just have much more space. FW is a really nice resort for families with little ones because they offer many activites that appeal to younger kids. They have pony rides, nightly campfire movies with Chip & Dale in attendance, a petty zoo, numerous playgrounds plus it is very close to MK. With little kids you do tend to spend a lot of time at MK.
If you can get a really good rate for the cabins and you can swing it financially--that is the way we would go. This way you can have bigger accomendations for both trips!
If you want to arrange something special for your Mom, just contact FW Conceirge. Yes, believe it or not, FW has conceirge. A friend of us works FW concerige and they are able to arrange everything for you from soup to nuts, just like all the other resorts conceirge.
Have a great trip!
