Did Disney just order ships 8-10?

Sounds like 3 additional, but I find it very odd that it would be announced this way. Is that a legit site? Something seems off.

I wasn't aware the Dream and the Fantasy were DCL's first ships. 😂

A MoU does not constitute a binding purchase either.

I only found mention of this one one other site which, like the one in OP, I've never heard of. Given Disney's penchant for secrecy and love of surprises, I'm surprised they would have let this cat out of the bag. If MW leaked it, that could kill any agreement.

Multiple sites are reporting it, starting a few days ago.

And I found this press release on the DCL website: https://dclnews.com/2019/10/30/disney-cruise-line-announces-three-new-ships/

QUOTE

Disney Cruise Line announced plans to build three additional cruise ships, each of them showcasing the immersive family entertainment, enchanting storytelling and unparalleled service that only Disney can deliver.

The company has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

END QUOTE

The media reporting is clearly quoting from it.

But, are these 3 new on top of the already announced 3 new, or are these the same 3 ?

Interesting. I think the article the OP posted got the info wrong and is talking about the three we already know about. Don't get me wrong...I would LOVE an additional 3 ships but I don't that is happening yet. I would love to be wrong though!

We just got off the Magic yesterday in NY. On the last sea day Captain Fabian happened to sit down with myself and some friends (he was walking by and we said hi and he asked if he could sit). We chatted about a lot of things and he said they were looking forward to the 3 new ships to bring the total to 7 so they could explore other itineraries (sorry Asia seemed to be a low priority). Not that I would expect him to tell us that they ordered an additional 3 new ships but nothing seemed to indicate that. Who knows!!!

For the announcement of the first two new ships, DCL stated "The company has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. ... Each new ship will be approximately 135,000 gross tons – slightly larger than the newest Disney Cruise Line ships, the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy – and each is currently planned to include about 1,250 guest staterooms." (source: https://dclnews.com/2016/03/03/disney-cruise-line-announces-two-new-ships-2/ )

Then there is this about the first three new ones: "Each new ship will be approximately 140,000 gross tons and each is currently planned to include about 1,250 guest staterooms." (https://dclnews.com/2018/03/08/first-look-at-disneys-next-ships-rendering/ )

Then there is: "The three new ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas and, at approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy." (https://dclnews.com/2019/08/25/disn...stination-at-worlds-largest-disney-fan-event/)

So the ship size has gotten bigger between the three announcements ?

For the most recent announcement re: the "three new ships" they state: "The company has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. ... The three new ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas and, at approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy."

Same size as the D23 info... are they the same ships or new ones ?

The Meyer Werft website only lists the 3 new previously announced: https://www.meyerwerft.de/en/meyerw...ffe/disney_cruise_line/disney_cruise_line.jsp All 3 there are listed as having "will have a rating of approx. 135,000 GT with approx. 1,250 cabins."

Then there is this article on the Maritime Executive website at https://www.maritime-executive.com/article/disney-cruise-line-announces-three-new-lng-ships :

QUOTE

Disney Cruise Line has announced plans to build three additional cruise ships and has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

The three new ships will be powered by LNG and, at approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Expected delivery dates for the new vessels have not yet been made public.

Disney Cruise Line currently has a fleet of four ships – the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Three 135,000gt LNG-fuelled ships are already under construction at Meyer Werft and scheduled for completion in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The first of these, Disney Wish, is scheduled for delivery in late 2021 and is expected to set sail beginning in January 2022.

gCaptain is reporting similar. https://gcaptain.com/disney-to-build-three-more-cruise-ships-at-meyer-werft/

Confusing.

If Disney did not intend to be announcing 3 new ships on top of the already announced 3 new ships, their wording was poor in the Oct 30 press release, as ship industry media all appear to be interpreting it as 3+3 not as same 3.

MW would have to disclose the order under financial rules. So I think this is same 3, not 3 more.

I have always expected them to announce about 3 to 5 new ships to be built circa 2025-2030 - but this particular story needs to be probed further. The announcement as significant as this needs to be made officially through an investor relations channel first.

This does seem to be a cobbling together of bits and pieces from multiple other announcements so it's probably a big misunderstanding.

I think the article is about the 3 ships that were already on order, so that site got its info wrong. It's finally getting close to cutting the steel on the first one and apparently some sites are just realizing that Disney ordered 3 ships, lol. Disney seems to be cautious in growing the fleet. They will need to see how the 3 new ships do before adding anymore.

Way back when DCL first started I worked for a travel agency and I remember the DCL press releases back then had mentioned that DCL wanted a fleet of 10 ships eventually but I don't think this announcement is 3 additional.

MJ

No, there are not another three new ships. Scott reported last week there was an error in a press release and was taking bets with his friend who would be the first to announce the three new ships that don’t exist.

The first line from the actual DCL news release is "As previously announced in 2016 and 2017, Disney Cruise Line is building three additional cruise ship". That seems pretty clear that this isn't for 3 additional ships.

That is the newly revised revised wording.

The original DCL news release started:

END QUOTE

It NOW states:

QUOTE

As previously announced in 2016 and 2017, Disney Cruise Line is building three additional cruise ships, each of them showcasing the immersive family entertainment, enchanting storytelling and unparalleled service that only Disney can deliver.

The ships will be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

END QUOTE

As of Monday it still had the original wording, so they changed it sometime this week.
