Did anyone here go through Betsy?

Just curious if anyone here was in New Orleans during Betsy. I know that Betsy wasn't as strong as some other hurricanes (like Camile and Andrew), but hurricanes that hit New Orleans are unique, due to the elevation, location of rivers and lakes, etc.

My family is from New Orleans, and my mom was about 10 during Betsy. She says it was really scary. It was earily calm for a while when the eye passed over, but of course, it got really bad after that. They only lost power for about a day, but many people were without power for weeks. In fact, a lot of people who went to their church were without power, so everyone brought their freezers to my grandparents house, and they just had freezers everywhere they could fit them for a few weeks. My grandparents' house lost water, but many of the friends without electricity had water, so my family would drive to someone's house every night for showers. I'm sure it was quite a production, since my mom is one of 5 kids. They were really dirty at the end of the day, too, because my grandparents own a nursery (plants, not babies), and everyone had to pitch in and clean up for weeks afterwards to get rid of all the debris. The schools were closed for quite a while, so they went to school on Saturdays for a long time to make up for it.

It's hard to believe that this could be much, much worse. My prayers are with all the people in the storm's path.

My husband was in Betsy but not in NOLA but here in Florida.

I was there for Camille, but I wasn't born yet when Betsy passed through. My brother was a newborn at the time and was there. My parents lived in a suburb of New Orleans and did not evacuate for the storm.

I was a sophomore at Newcomb College (Tulane) when Betsy hit. It was during orientation. We were kept in the dorms and lost power. I think they brought us boxed lunches.

Things got back to normal very quickly and classes started on schedule.

I was living in Baton Rouge when Betsy hit. I remember spending the night in our hall, worried about the attic folding stairs, just over my head. Didn't sleep. I remember the mess in our neighborhood, and being without power for several weeks, and hearing about New Orleans. But the biggest thing I remember is that because of the power outages, I missed seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan.
