My dd's friend wants to take the train from Bay Head NJ to Penn Station in NYC on a Monday Morning. He has to be at work uptown by 8am. I looked at the schedule online and wanted to know if this is right. Does he have to take the train from Bay head to Long Branch and then change again at Newark Penn station to get to NYC Penn Station? :confused3 Thanks!

I take that train all the time (not from Bayhead though but on the same line). The train stops at Newark but you don't have to change trains. Get off at Newark if you want to take the Path into the World Trade Center or stops before it. Stay on the train if you are going into Penn Station.

Oh and he shouldn't have to switch trains in Long Branch either. It's all on the North Jersey coast line.

Thanks! So that means he just has to take the one train from Bayhead right into Penn station NYC? My friend took it once in the summer and said she had to change trains across the track at Long Branch. This would be so much easier taking one train. I never did check and see how much this costs either, do you get your ticket on the train? There is one at 507 am that gets into nyc at 710, that should be enough time for him to get to work uptown. Thanks for your help.

Your friend only takes one train. He'll get off the last stop which is NY Penn Station. He can either buy the ticket from the sales agent at the station (if there is one) or he can buy the ticket from the machine which is at every station. If he chooses to buy his ticket on the train itself, he can do that also, but, they charge I think something like $5.00 extra. The trains usually run on or close to schedule, so if he takes the 5:07 and even if there is a slight delay he will be able to get uptown in time. When he gets off the train at Penn Station, they have a cab line right in front or take the subway which is right there also, on the corner. He can even buy his ticket in advance. I do that for my dd when she takes the train in. This way if she's running late, she already has her ticket in hand and just has to board the train. Hope this helps....

Thanks so much! There actually isnt a ticket agent at Bay Head, its very small so I guess he has to buy his ticket on the train. I looked again at the schedule, I guess I was confused because my friend took this same train last summer but on the weekend and said she had to change in long branch, I guess that only happens on the weekends. I will be sure to pass this info along to my dd's friend.

they might not have an actual ticket agent, but there should at least be a ticket vending machine. I believe they have those at every station. It's an automated machine, sort of like an ATM. If not, you'll buy the ticket on the train, but I'm pretty sure they should have that machine at the train station.

Thank you NewJersey (I like your name!) I will be sure to have him look at the station for a machine. Last time I dropped my friend off there last summer, it looked like just a few benches with a roof, very small station in Bay Head. After the first time he takes the train into the city, it should be alot easier going back and forth on weekends.

Thanks! It'll be much easier after he takes it the first time. I took it last year for an internship I had in the wall street area and after a few days I even learned the train that was an express right to my station so it saved about 30 minutes on the trip home!

I'll be taking the same train starting in August when I start my job. If he is going to do it reguarly (every day) he can look into a monthly, even a weekly pass that saves money. If he's still in college, he can get a student discount.
