So going the end of June, it's going to be HOT and sticky. Our daughter (5), is still in Pull-Ups, and very prone to rashes. I'm just wondering what the best way is to prevent some nasty rashes due to the heat/friction/humidity etc? Are some diapers better than others (cloth vs. commercial pull ups), any lotions etc?

1) We found that spraying a power deodorant to rash-prone areas halted such rashes for the grandkids.
2) This works well for kids, as well as adults.

The nice thing about cloth is that the kids know they are wet. They can tell you and you can change it. There's no moisture wicking that can keep a kid in a wet pull-up or diaper for hours and hours. That can help to prevent rashes.

We used Bumkins brand cloth pull-ups. Cotton inside and nylon outside. I haven't checked recently but a year or so ago Costco had a pack of them on their website at a good price. Although DS was done with them earlier than your child's age we have passed them along to sisters who are older and they have seemed to help them.

I think that a lot of children get fewer rashes in cloth (even before they're verbal and can tell you when they need to be changed), but you'll have a hard time finding ones that fit a 5 year old. Extra large workhorse fitted diapers (from Green Mountain Diapers) and an extra large Bummi's snap wrap cover would be your best bet. Cloth can be kind of a pain while traveling though, especially if you don't stay in a house with a washer and dryer.

My kids have tended to get fewer rashes from the natural diapers, like Seventh Generation. I think they go up to a size 6. I know they do for overnights, but I don't know about daytime diapers. The caveat is that I find that the gathers on the sides of the legs aren't as soft and can cause chaffing. You should experiment before you go and see if some kind of ointment or powder works best at preventing it.

Look at adult incontinence lotions. Some are better than others and price will be a good dictator, here. Anyway, they have waterproof lotions and some of them are very good. I would recommend applying with medical disposable gloves; because, the good stuff is very hard to wash off which is the whole idea of being waterproofed. Don't be stingy with putting it on, either.

I would put her on a schedule and make sure if she drinks that she goes to the bathroom to try right afterwards. If you eat, again try in the bathroom. If you know her cycle then use that as well. Like if she goes every 4 hours then at the 3-1/2 hour mark try again with the bathroom. If you can get her to go more in the bathroom you won't have as many accidents.
