My youngest (18 months) is just finishing up a round of augmentin for an infection. Last dose today. Every time she is on it she gets a nasty diaper rash, but I have never seen one this bad. Her skin is bright red with tiny little bumps all over it. I was managing to keep it under control with cornstarch (nothing else helps at all) but overnight it got much worse. It's now outside of the diaper area over her inner thighs.

I have used butt paste, balmex, desitin, first aide cream but the only thing that helps (usually) is cornstarch. I even made a paste out of the first aid cream and cornstarch that helped a bit but now nothing seems to touch it. I gave her some Tylenol and she ran around after her bath tonight sans diaper to let her little tushy get some air but I just don't know what else to do. Is this something that she should see her pediatrician for? I just feel so bad because I can tell it hurts.

One of my sons had a lot of ear infections and would get awful rashes after the antibiotics. The two things I found that helped some other than a couple of the ointments listed were washing his bottom with gentle soap and warm water instead of using wipes, then blowdrying it so that he was totally dry when the diaper went on. We actually used the blowdryer routinely with all our children at the suggestion of our pediatrician. He also could not wear Huggies diapers b/c they always gave him rashes.

You might want to take her to the doctor. Have you tried Baby Gold Bond Medicated powder? It's a little expensive, but I swear by it. I used it with all my kids, and it would clear up their rashes overnight.

It's yeast, not diaper rash. Use Lamisil or something like that...I think they have some specifically for babies.

The air-drying thing works best, and then it just takes time for the diaper rash to go away. Our first baby had diaper rash so bad DH wanted to take him to the ER! It's hard to be patient, but that's really all you can do.

Hugs!!

My DD used to get terrible rashes that sound just like your child's. At first, the ped diagnosed it as a yeast infection and treated with yeast infection meds. And that may be what your child has, considering the recent antibiotics (antibiotics will throw off the balance of yeast -- I get yeast infections pretty much any time I take an antibiotic).

In the end, though, what worked for DD was prescription Elidel which is used to treat eczema. Eventually, DD grew out of her diaper rashes.

I would recommend taking your child to the peds office, though.

I should add that we also sometimes had a prescription ointment for yeast infections.

Call the pediatrician. It sounds like it could be a yeast infection from the antibiotics.

One thing that really works for DS's diaper rash is Mylanta. We dab it on his rash with a cotton ball, let it dry, then put diaper cream on it. Oatmeal baby bath helps too. I've also heard that triple paste cream (Target pharmacy keeps it behind the counter) is really good. I bought some tonight and it was $7.69.

DS never used to get a diaper rash. But he's had 2 episodes of bad diarhea in the last few months that really made his bottom raw. And the sand on the playground at daycare really aggravates it.

Our daughter was born with a heart defect, so was on round the clock meds for a couple of years. We had some of the nastiest yeast infection diaper rashes one could imagine.

One of the docs at the Children's hospital told me to put Maalox on it. Worked like a charm.

We used Mylanta on our DDs bottoms. Just swabbed it on with a cottonball all over the affected area - worked like a charm. :thumbsup2

Okay, first of all I do recommend calling the ped. They can prescribe some prescription cream and that should take care.

in the mean time, and I know you'll think this is nuts, but do this...

Bet the whites of 2 eggs until stiff. Put the stiff egg whites on the affected area. It should heal up some overnight. My daughter's ped told us to do this when she had a bleeding rash following a round of antibiotics. I thought he had finally went over the edge. I was desperate though and did try it. The rash was gone in a day. :)

CrazedDisfan, I can't believe the Doctors are still recommending the egg whites.
Many many years ago I took my now 29 year old son to Texas to visit my sister. I didn't think about the change in water so I kept mixing his formula with Texas water. He got the worst rash I have ever seen and I am a nurse.
His bottom was red, raw and bleeding. I had to get my sister to change him becase I couldn't stop crying when I saw how much pain he was in.
I called my Dr at home and he told me to whip up egg whites, blend some oatmeal in a blender until it was a powder, mix the two together and spread it on his bottom and let him fall asleep naked. He told me to put his crib near a window and let the sun beat down on his bottom through the window and this would help too.
His rash cleared in less than 24 hours.
I also went to the local hospital and they gave me some pre-mixed formula from the company so I wouldn't have to mix it for him.
this was 29 years ago when they didn't sell anything but the condensed formulas, no powder, and no premixed in the stores. Peggie

My DD (20 months) is on the tail end of going through something very similar. She was prescribed Omnicef last Tuesday. She's been on it two or three times without any problems, but this time she got a HORRIBLE diaper rash. It was so bad that she was walking around the house holding her bottom saying "itchy, itchy" :sad1: . Anyhow, before I was able to talk to her doctor, I talked to our very helpful pharmacist. She basically said that it was a similar side effect to the yeast infections some women get. She advised that DD eat yogurt a couple of times a day (no problem for DD...her favorite!). Another product similar to yogurt that she recommended is something called Florastar. She also suggested using Lotrimin AF a couple of times a day on the affected area. It really helped along with hourly diaper changes and LOTS of Desitin!

Ouch...poor baby!

I'd call my ped first and..

If it is yeast....cool water baths followed by a hairdryer on cool....lots of reduced sugar/plain yogurt and some anti-yeast meds. You can get it over the counter...I just used the regular old monistat on my daughter, but you might be able to find some just for kids, though I've never seen it.

Tiny bumps make me think it's yeast, rather than diaper rash. check with your doctor.

DS had the worst diaper rash of his life after a round of augmentin. It turns out it was a yeast infection and it sounds just like you described. Call you doctor and they can get you a prescription that will clear it right up. I know it is hard when are babies are hurting so bad... :(

You can use the same yeast infection stuff they sell over the counter for it too. That is what they told us to do when DS had this years ago. They did tell me a strength to look for though, a pharmisist might help. It is the stuff for athletes foot that we found to be the cheapest.

Gold bond is also good stuff.

Sounds like a fungal rash. The skin has "good" bacteria on it, in addition to "good" fungi. They usually keep each other in balance...this is called "normal flora". When an antibiotic is introduced, it kills the "good" bacteria in addition to killing the bad bacteria. This killing of the "good" bacteria allows the fungi on the skin (which the good bacteria normally keeps in check) to flourish, causing the fungal rash/yeast infection. Yogurt works because the live cultures in the yogurt "eat" the yeast. Anti-fungal cream would also work, as would an oral anti-fungal, such as Diflucan. Many docs do both the oral and cream, to get the fungal rash with both barrels.

Call your pediatrician, tell him/her that your child has a fungal rash and have them prescribe you cream. You can try the egg white thing...it probably won't hurt and might be soothing.

If you do get an anti-fungal cream, layer it on along with A&D Ointment, Desitin or some other protective cream (anti-fungal first, give it a chance to soak in, and then the protective cream over it), keep the baby's bottom as dry as possible, expose it to air as much as possible. Fungal/yeast rashes flourish is warm, damp, dark places. Warm, damp, dark...sounds like a diper, right?

DD used to get a horrible rash that we treated with Lotrimin AF. There was one time though that the Lotrimin did not work and the Ped prescribed some type of Silver Nitrate cream. Cleared it right up!

We also could not use any type of wipes - just warm moist paper towels when needed.
