Ok so I have started to pack my diaper bag for the plane for my DS 14 months. I plan on packing snacks, 2 change of clothes for DS, diapers, wipes, ointment, empty sippy cup for water/milk, binkie (for takeoff and landing), toys and lovey etc. Is there anything MAJOR I seem to be missing? Or you found extremely necessary for your plane trip?? :yay:

I'll be traveling with my girls next week. Our pediatrician recommended that our DD 13 months, have a drink for take off and landing (we dont use a binkie) and to give her some benadryl to help ease any discomfort she may have. Our DD 4 yrs was the same age on her first plane ride and we followed the same instructions back then...it worked great! Plus, the benadryl made her a bit sleepy so she slept through the whole flight, refreshed and ready to go when we arrived in Orlando. I will also be bringing our portable DVD player with a Barney DVD...just in case DD isn't so sleepy. She is so squirmy...I don't know what I will do to contain her otherwise!! Hope this helps!

A shirt change for you, just in case. Disposable changing pads (I usually use a receiving blanket but don't like to shove airport/airplane bathroom germs back in my diaper bag). Plenty of wipes. Purell. Cloth dipe for random cleanups. Plenty of diapers (twice as many as you think you'll need in case of delay). Small plastic bags to bag up wet/dirty clothes.

Just be warned Benadryl back-fired on us. We gave it to DD on a cross-country flight last year (she was 15mo). She slept the whole way and was up all night when we arrived in CA. Also, Benadryl makes some kids hyper.

Try to bring some quiet small toys to occupy your child. Books are good for this.

Yes I am not a Benadryl fan myself, I am packing some i(in my checked baggage) in case of allergic reactions at Disney but don't plan on giving it to him on the plane. It's around nap time so hopefully he will sleep for a little bit :)

Thanks!

Benadryl gave my cousin's son a bad reaction so just food for thought.....
She had never given it to him before and did this thinking it would be a good idea. Well she found out that he had a reaction to it and they could not fly out. I would just make sure how your child handles it before giving it to him/her.

Also we use the scented plastic bags for dirty diapers. (we use duck bags)
You might want to make sure you have a few of these on the plane just in case.

Great idea post. My baby girl will be 2 wks shy of her first bday, so we're trying to round up all the tips we can get, because we'll be flying down from Montana in january. :):woohoo:

I think you have it covered, maybe add an extr t'shirt for yourself as well. I also had success with a mix of new toys and a couple old favorites.

I would think twice about using OTC medicines, especially in light of the new warning to parents not to use them even for sick children under 2. Most kids do fine and have no issues in the air that a sippie cup or a snack can't fix.

I have taken my two boys (now 8 & 6) to the Uk at least once a year, since the eldest was 15 months old (when we moved here) - and often alone! The flight is 7 hours (plus 3 hrs at airport & 3 hrs by car other end, oh & one way is overnight!).

I have NEVER given them medication. I firmly believe that anyone who needs to drug their child on a plane should not be taking their child on a plane! I'll probably get flamed for that but.......

Yes, it is hard work keeping them amused - but not impossible. I survived the journey with a 4 month old & 2 1/2 year old both ways without DH!

Yoiu just need to be prepared, as the OP is trying to be. A few new surprises mixed with old faithfuls always works. Try not to take anything too noisy. Colour Wonder products are great for planes. Snacks are good too. Don't forget the restrictions on liquids! I would take an EMPTY sippy cup & ask the stewd(ess) to fill before departure (unless you are able to buy drinks after security & board the plane with them).

Buy a milk/juice/water whatever you need after security but before you board as you never know what they have on board. I have flown with DS 6 times (the longest was 5 hours) and have never had any ear issues that were not eased by a paci or a drink. I would not give them any medication especially one you have not tested at home.

Also you are flying to Orlando so half your flight will be children and the toddlers will probably be causing a bigger commotion that your 15 month old ;) So don't sweat it too much.

Good point, even though my dd's are older we still purchase water, juice or soda after security to bring onboard. You never know what brands they have or if the FA can get you something prior to take off. Most airports have a pretty good selection of beverages including juice you can bring on board.

Also if you want to bring on some food, snacks and sandwiches are fine just no liquids or gels. I use frozen carrots or grapes to keep things cold in an insulated lunch box.

I always bring a small lightweight receiving blanket as well because we always seem to be cold on planes and airplane blankets are yucky and not always available. And I second the recommendation for an extra shirt for you. I made that mistake on our last trip and ended up smelling like spilled milk the entire day - not good!

Have a great trip!

We got stopped at security for the Desitin in the diaper bag. They let us go on. But on the way back, I made sure the Desitin, neosporin, and the hand sanitizer were in my little clear ziplock baggie.

Have fun!
