Diamond, is that with a D or a Z?

Would you consider a CZ wedding ring if it were real gold or platinum?

  • I would consider it.

  • I would totally do it!!

  • Definitely not!

I too can always tell the difference between a CZ and a real Diamond. A CZ when looked at in a good light will look rainbowy and like a cloudy flawed diamond, but a diamond will dazzle with different colors of light, and look almost like ice.

Now, Mossianite is just a man made diamond, and most of the time, you cannot tell that it is not a real diamond. It essentially is, the maufacturer just sped up the process a little.. Stores and certain other places have special testers that test for Mossianite.

I don't like the way a CZ looks, and some jewelers will not set them in a gold or platinum setting. It takes too much work, and like someone else said, you run the risk of breaking the diamond because of the heat that is necessary to mold the metal to the ring. I have a 1.5 carat total weight ring, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Also, moissanite has more of a green hue than diamonds (the larger the stone, the more obvious the hue). Most moissanite are in the "J" color range with a green cast. You can heat-treat it to make it look a little more white, but the effects are only temporary. On the good side, they are very sparkly and beautiful :) I know someone who spent $3k on a platinum 3 carat moissanite ring...if it were me, I would have preferred a smaller real diamond, especially if I were spending thousands of dollars!! To me, her 3 carat stone screams FAKE (she and her fiance make under $50,000/year combined), and while this is not important to some people, it is important to me.

Another option is to be different and get a colored stone instead of a white one for the center stone, such as a sapphire. I've seen a few rings of people who have done this (since a diamond was too pricey) and they were quite happy.

For the sake of accuracy, there are SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS that are starting to hit the market. There are very few of them, and they are being sold as what they are, and the dealers are charging close to the cost of a natural diamond. The gem quality ones were developed by a Russian firm, and they are actually a means to a newer, better semi conductor. Actually, Diamonds were one of the first synthetic minerals made, by GTE in the 40's (as my memory serves) it is used very commonly today as an abrasive. A good portion of the Diamonds sold today are not gem quality, but for commercial use

Diamonds are pure carbon, Crystallized in the Cubic (they call it Isometric) manner.

The chemical composition of Moissanite is SiC (mostly Silicon and some carbon). It is crystallized in the Hexagonal manner. Natural Moissanite is mostly found on asteroids and lunar samples.

It's what the ring represents, not what it's made of. We purchased my husbands gold band ring at Wal-Mart for $33. My ring was his mothers, I have no I idea if it's real or not - it doesn't really matter to me.

I agree that it is not the ring but what it represents -- my husbands ring is a sliver one we picked up for $5.00 at a souviner stand at the a"four corners" on our way to get married in Vegas... and he loves it - wouldn't let me get him another.

Mine? A one carat diamond emerald cut with an emerald on either side. I was shocked and thrilled - but would have married him with a "cigar band".

So anyway - pick your stone - real, fake, semi-real, semi-fake :p

Just as long as you know what it represents and love it (and him)

That's exactly what it should be about! ::MinnieMo

I wanted to let you know another way to save money on ladie's wedding bands - look for the exact same ring in their engagement section. My husband and I picked out the one for me in the wedding section, then noticed they had an identical one in the engagement section and asked them to compare them for us - they were the same! We saved $250 on my ring that way - apparently, anything that says "wedding", they mark up even more.

HTH

I did exactly opposite. I started out with a .50 diamond with a .30 on each side and "chips" in my wedding band. A few years ago, I felt like I wanted a different look, but didn't want to get rid of my original ring for sentimental reasons. So I bought "diamonique" from qvc. I gotta say I love it. It gives me a different look, didn't cost a fortune (didn't want to waste disney world money), and I still have my diamond.

I agree with TinkerBess. I believe it is the sentiment that counts. My DH goes WAY overboard buying me jewelry on a whim and then afterwards I'm thinking...oh, no how did he pay for that or how are WE going to pay for that. I know its an awful thought, but sometimes generosity (at least on my DH part) feels like its gonna put me in the poorhouse. To be honest, if my DH bought me a CZ, I think I would love it more given the fact that he was kind enough to take my financial hysteria into consideration. I know most women would love to have their hubby buy them a great, expensive diamond, but me being the financial worry wart that I am, I would love a CZ! (And since we have been married almost 20 years, we are not in the same boat as newly engaged couples, I will shut my mouth now and hope there is NO WAY DH would ever read this thread and get his feelings hurt).

Sorry this is off topic, but EvilinaDM101, what kind of puppy is that? It looks like this little Papillon I just went to the pet store and played with and begged FH to get me..... I think that our other puppy needs a playmate, but FH is dead set on not getting another until we get a new house. :(

Yes he is a papillon!! He is the greatest!! Oh Okay, one of the greatest I mean (we have another dog). Just a few pointers, facts whatever you want to call them about papillons! They are VERY smart. They (this may sound weird) are sweet smelling dogs. Pretty much that means it takes alot of dirt to make them smelly. :) I've heard that they are not good around small children but my 4 year old nephew CONSTANTLY pulls and plays with him and they are fine, I guess it depends how they are raised. They are VERY passionate dogs. My papillon LOVES to follow people around and if you are just relaxing they tend to do that too. We've had him since he was a pup and he's about 1yr old now and like I said he has been the greatest. :wizard: Here is a little fairy dust your way to hopefully change FDH's mind about the papillon. :goodvibes :goodvibes I love mine to pieces!! OH and ALSO we have a doxie and they are GREAT together!! Hope this info helps!!:earsgirl: :goodvibes :goodvibes

This is an interesting topic! I have been married for over 8 years, and have been sporting a CZ (Diamonique from QVC, actually) since getting engaged. We just had so many other things to spend money on and to me, it looks enough like a diamond that it doesn't matter to me. Nobody has ever said anything to me, if they did think it was fake. I've gotten lots of compliments on my set. Recently we were in the Bahamas and looking in the jewelry stores - thinking of replacing the center stone with a real diamond, but then I thought, hmm... money for another cruise or replace a stone that doesn't really matter to me if it's real or not... hmm... well, we wound up rebooking for another cruise!! Now planning to do a vow renewal on that cruise for our 10th anniversary so I guess we'll have to decide if I want to go with a new "real" ring for that ceremony.

Honestly I would have said "yes" to my DF no matter what he presented to me when he proposed. It wouldn't have made a difference to me if it was a diamond or a pebble he had found on the side of the road! If you're in love and want to get married now then do it! If a dream wedding is more important than a dream ring then that's what's important to you.

One thing you might consider is not even having an engagement ring right now. Invest that money in a really nice wedding band and then after the wedding if you still want a rock buy one when you can afford one.
