can anyone help me . my husband just recently found out he is a diabetic. does anyone know if we grab a hamburger at lunch do they have lite buns any where they serve sandwiches. the sit down dinners i;m not concerned about because he knows what he can eat . but when you are in the parks and just want a hamburg to tide you over until dinner. any help will be appreciated. going the end of sept. thank you

I'm not sure about lite buns -- but an alternative might be that many counter service locales also offer salads with meat (like chicken).

I would suggest you go over to the 'disABILTIES" forum. One of the topics which appears very often has to do with diabetics and WDW. You will find lots of information and help there.

I take insulin and have to watch diet closely.
I dont think they have lite buns.

1.You need the extra carbs on your 'busy days'.
2. Or he can split that burger with someone else, load up on salad (most counter services have salad)
3. opt for a wrap or better yet, anything whole grain.

You can also ask for no bun. But your going to be extra active so I would let him eat the bun.

Does he have to monitor his sugar constantly?
If not, then he is probably borderline and just needs to stay away from excessive carbs and sugar.

I was misdiagnosed as a type 2 and it turned out to be a slow-develping form of type 1 (LADA - Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood). I was able to control it with diet for awhile, because I was still producing some insulin. At theme parks, I would get a burger and just toss the top bun and fold the bottom one over. I think that way it only had about 10 grams of carbs, plus ketchup or whatever condiments it had. He should be more active than usual, so he should be able to have an extra treat or two.

Have a great!!!! trip!!!

One thing to be aware of is that most, if not all, of the sit-down restaurants will prepare a no sugar added desset if you order ahead. My mom is diabetic so I made these arrangements at the time I arranged our priority seatings. As a result my mom was able to enjoy some amazing desserts.

Most table services will probably have whole grain/wheat/bran/oat/rye breads. Again, if he isnt monitoring his sugar and on pills and or insulin, the activity level being at WDW should be enough to where he can even treat himself and not worry. If he is spiking out of control, then he would be monitoring, medicating, ect ect and would need to closely supervise intake and output.

My dad and mom are both diabetic like myself - 8 kids and they all dodged that bullet -- cept' me. Dad is remarried for 30 years already - but my step mom is a nag - *****in about everything that goes into his mouth --- banning him from potato salad or corn - POISON - he is miserable --- my one pet peeve about this is - she doesnt care if he drinks... vodka straight up at a party. I asked him - what would you rather have? the potato salad or the vodka or a piece of keylime pie (it was a bbq) he said the salad.

I much rather see him eat the salad then drink the vodka. All his medication states 'DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL' along with the knowledge that alcohol like starch is just sugar in the bloodstream. ---- His wife saw it as me butting my nose in, but I insisted that she read his medicine - nowhere does it say he cant have potato salad on it.

Let dad make choices, he can have almost everything if he is just a diet control diabetic - He just cant have everything at once. Sugar free is everywhere - ASK for it.. same with rice pasta, whole grain bread, wonderful veggie packed wraps --- Ask. --- check out the menus over on allearsnet.com too.

Watch out for the carbs in sugar free. Sugar free chocolate has more carbs than regular chocolate! It's the carbs that count.
If your husband takes insulin, chances are he'll need the bun and the carbs to keep his blood sugar from dropping because of the heat and the amount of walking. Be sure to keep fast acting sugar on hand, like life-savers, if he's on insulin.
Have a great trip!
