I've just started using Byetta for my diabetes and am traveling on a plane tomorrow. Byetta (is an injection) needs to be kept cold, so I bought a carrying case for it that has a blue plastic container (sealed) that is frozen and then placed in carrying case. You then put the pen in the case and can carry it around for up to 20 hours and it will keep the pen cold.

So- here's my question- Can I take this onto the airplane with me? If not, how can I keep this medicatioin cold and with me on the plane??

THANKS for your help all!!

A few months ago I received a letter from Byetta that it is now safe to keep your current pen in temperatures up to the mid-70s.

It is too late for you to do it now for this trip, but I have also gotten a free zipper case from Byetta which holds two cold packs and have also bought a Frio wallet (from www.coolerconcept.com ). I have never had any problem with any of these through Security.

Do not use a frozen gel cold pack; that could cause the Byetta to freeze, which will ruin it more than heat will. What you could do is instead of the cold pack, use a zip-lock plastic bag with ice cubes in the carrier. Just before you go through Security dump out the ice cubes into any water fountain. Once you have gone through security you can get the plastic bag refilled with ice from any food service location.

you should be able to take it on the plane, as long as you make it clear to security, (i.e. - doctor's note).
It was the same way when I had to take my Glucogon on the plane trip to WDW.

Hope this is helpful.

I took my Byetta to Italy and Toronto recently, as well as to other domestic locations. I put it in a thing just like yours, and had no problems whatsoever. I made sure I tore the prescription label off the box, and tucked it in the pocket of the carrying case, along with the lid for the needles.

Everything worked just fine, and nobody asked about it. I do highly recommend taking more supplies than you think you need in your carry on - you never know with airlines these days! I was stuck in London due to an Italian transit strike without my luggage (which got lost in the shuffle). Thank goodness for a change of clothes and medical stuff I had tucked in the carry on!

I travel with a slender thermos, I put the byetta pen in (tip up) inside a ziploc, then 3-4 ice cubes in another ziploc along side the byetta. as Cheshire Figment said, dump the ice from home before going through security, I declare the medicine and show them the empty thermos before scanning, then get fresh ice on the other side.

I also got a letter about new storage recommendations, it's ok at temps up to 77 degrees. which is great this time of year for me, but in the summer and when traveling you need to pay attention.

We have gone through security recently (October) with a Frio pack, cold pack and ice all to keep meds cool with no problems. Just be sure to tell them when you get up to the scanner that this is meds with (ice, cold pack, etc). You don't have to dump the ice.
