Is anyone else out there following a diabetic diet plan? If so, what has been your experience with this plan? Any recipes ideas?

I am not diabetic, but my doctor suggested that I try this diet plan to loose weight (plus two of my "lunch buddies" are diabetic). I have been following the plan for about three weeks now and have lost 12.5 lbs. :p It seems to be working well for me...plus my diabetic friends glucose levels have been in a good range just about everyday.

Any comments/ideas/suggestions (good or bad) are welcome.

Hi, Cajunfan! :)

My DH was diagnosed with diabetes last fall. We both went to a diabetes education short course. We were totally unimpressed. Their advice was to follow the food pyramid guidelines and avoid sugar. That was about it. I am totally exasperated with the American Diabetes Association. I think they are totally missing the ball. They still suggest having the bulk of your food be starches and carbohydrates which your body turns to sugar. Sugar is bad for diabetics right?

I do agree that cutting out sugar is great. For us though, that just did not go far enough. After reading about how Kathlyn's DH's diabetes was helped on the Atkins diet, we both decided to give low carb a try. We've been on it 7 weeks and have lost 20 and 25 lbs. Cutting out the refined carbs and starches has really helped to keep his blood sugar under control.

Since you don't actually have diabetes, the diabetic diet may be enough to help you lose weight. :) Best of luck to you in whichever plan you choose to follow. :) :) :)

I don't know much about it but I do know someone that has lost over 115 pounds on it.

Hey Lynn!
I don't know squat about that diet (as you know) but I did want to say how HAPPY I am to see that WISH clippie in your siggy!
Welcome, welcome!! You are doing great, so keep working it. Those WATP tapes will be a big help too!

LisaTx,

I am sorry to hear about your situation with your hubby. I am glad that Atkins is working for you all.

As for me, my Dr. handed me three sheets of paper and suggested that I try this diet. I was fortunate enough that it is almost identical to the old WW diet (of about 10 years ago), so I kind of knew what to do and what not to do. For me, it was all about eating well rounded meals, lots of variety and PORTION CONTROL! (I thought a plate full of spaghetti was one portion not four:confused: ) This diet also takes a lot of planning. I do know that one friend that I cook lunch for (type 2 Diabetic, non-insulin dependent) has kept her glucose levels in the range recomended by her Dr. for just about every meal. There were a few that sent her levels up high. Another coworker (type 1 diabetic and insulin injection dependent) mentioned that your insuance may let you meet with a dietician once a year (hers does this). She also mentioned that some foods, no matter how healthy they are will send her glucose levels soaring (she also said that stress sends hers up way high). Anyway, I can totally understand your frustration...even though I was somewhat familiar this type of diet, I did a lot of reading.... plus,I like to cook and use a lot of WW recipes and low carb recipes and have found a great series of cookbooks by JoAnna Lund (Healthy Exchanges).

Mum4jenn...I am so glad to hear that someone has lost 115lbs on this diet. I have been doing it for three weeks and have lost 15 lbs now (and I am not very good at sticking with it on weekends).

Terry! Chris & I have been doing the tapes every other day now...I am so glad to get him moving too...as you can see, as of this moring I am down 15 lbs....I know I shouldn't be checking this but once a week, but right now I am so excited about this. Thanks for all your support and encouragement...

Lynn

Sounds like you are having great success with this plan. That's what is most important, that the eating plan you follow is right for you.
