Diabetic desserts

My family went to Disney in May for my daughters dance performance with her dance school. During our time there we were trying to find diabetic items for my mom. We had no luck at all. We checked a few dessert type places in Magic Kingdom and Downtown Disney all with no luck. Even at the restaurants. No luck there either.
Why is it that almost every place that offers some type of food or dessert, they do not offer anything for diabetics? There are low fat selections and vegetarian selections, but nothing for diabetics. Why is that?
If there are some things available, where do I find them? Are these places hidden in the bushes out of sight?
We will be going again next May for another dance performance and this time we hope to find at least one thing to satisfy my Mom's craving but still be okay for her to have.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Diabetic desserts need to be ordered ahead of time and some restaurants will have something available but not guaranteed. They aren't on the menu and you have to ask for them.

Here is a link to a post earlier this year about Diabetic dining at Disney

You can also contact Ahnalira at www.ourlaughingplace.com as they are frequent visitors at WDW and have a lot of experience with diabetic desserts there. Take a look at restaurant section of the board too as there are pictures of any diabetic dessert they have ever ordered.

Hope this helps

I thank you for your information but that still leads me to this question.
Why do we have to order it ahead of time? We don't make priority seating arrangements for our trip. We opt for the spur of the moment meal instead. We are on vacation and don't want to be on a schedule.
Why can't Disney restaurants and shops offer these selections year round? Do they not like diabetics? No offense, but they seem to cater alot to vegetarians and those on a diet watching their weight. Why not those watching their sugar?
I'm sorry to sound like a snob, but really. If you think about it, the only way Disney wants us to have a diabetic snack, is to reserve one ahead of time. That to me just sounds silly.

I work at the WL and we always have sugar free ice cream available. It's not listed on the dessert menu so you do have to ask for it. From my experience, we get maybe 1 or 2 requests a month for it. I would say thats why you don't see more sugar free desserts out there.

I do know that France in Epcot has a sugar free cheesecake at the Patisserie and Beaches and Cream has a sugar free vanilla shake.

Again, these are not on the menu so anywhere you go just ask if they have anything that is sugar free.

I think it's a matter of freshness. At the sit-down restaurants, not enough people order sugar free desserts on a daily basis to justify making them each day. They would just be throwing them away at night. So, if you want a fresh sugar free dessert, you need to call ahead.

DH and I went in the September slow season and were thankful for our PS's. All the good restaurants were crowded, and walk-ups were not getting seated (or had long waits)

It is absolutely a matter of freshness! There aren't enough requests for sugar free desserts to keep making them all the time. That's why it's better to call ahead. Even if you call a few hours ahead you have a better chance than if you just show up. Having said that, there are a few places that I know of (probably many more that I do not know of too! :D ) that have desserts on hand. These are Boma (sugar free ice cream and cheesecake), and Kringla Bakeri in Norway (sugar free choc. mousse).
I actually think most restaurants keep some kind of sugar free dessert (usually ice cream because it can be kept frozen and therefore has a longer shelf life) on hand, you just have to ask.

you may want to talk to your mom and her doctor. for most diabetics, the thinking has changed, and its more about counting carbohydrates than worrying about sugar. i know that for me a huge plate of pasta would be worse than eating a small serving of regular ice cream. i'm not encouraging your mom to cheat, its just that most diabetics can eat what they thought they couldnt as long as they allow for it. just dont go nuts. i've been type one for 20 years, and have been very lucky with no complications so far. its all about balancing diet, insulin, exercise, and its different for everyone. life is too short! (besides, most "sugar-free" deserts are loaded with fat, and as appealing as a bowl of mud!) good luck!
